Possibly PED’s that severely damaged the kidneys? In any case, RIP to a great player

NO.   Rare genetic kidney disease.  He has known since 2006.  Life cut short.

Wondering if he was a transplant candidate?

he was. He publicly posted like 2 weeks ago that his situation was dire and needed to get the transplant asap and asking for help from fans finding one

Damn, I thought he'd find a donor in time :(

Not sure how he died waiting for a kidney.  only 5% of dialysis patients per year get one--the overwhelming majority will never be transplanted.  Those who do  typically have been on dialysis for years, on average.  there's something missing from this story.

I'm actually a bit surprised that no one stepped forward...

RIP Nick.

it doesn't really work that way.  the waiting list for a kidney is very long. if he had a living related match, then likely would have gotten one, so you can't assume no one in his family stepped forward.  since living strangers rarely donate a kidney to another stranger, most  recipients rely on matched pre-deceased donors.

Very sad.

There is a long waitlist for all those in need of a kidney, but with Mangold being type O it was even worse.

Just for the sake of discussion and gaining knowledge, what if an individual stepped forward and said he would give to Mangold but no one else?

Then Mangold gets the kidney. Directed donations skip the waiting list.

That’s exactly how living donation works.  A donor would have to step forward to answer a specific call for an organ.  If he’s a match, he donates.

Maybe. He could’ve also been placed on dialysis. Nevertheless, people on dialysis have long list of potential complications. It sounds like one of them caught up to him. A sad situation all around.

Beautiful moment with Rex Ryan on his former player.

I am in the minority, and its ok, but I'lll always be fond of Rex.   I think the NFL is better when he is a part of it, one way or another.

I’ve been a fan of Rex since he took Brady down with Mark Freakin Sanchez. HATED HATED HATED the hire though for Buffalo. I still quote his “Let’s go get a snack!” line fairly often.

It was a bad hire for the Bills because it was all about getting revenge on the Jets.  That said it was an entertaining two years.
