Not sure if this is of any interest but I thought the contrast would be a nice distraction.

I've watched parts of 5 games today. I would say the general difference is in college there is more of a "let them play" attitude.  They just missed or failed to call a blatant block in the back on a Texas punt return TD. No way that is missed in the pros. On the other hand, there seems to be so many ticky tack PI calls in the NFL. In the Ohio State Illinois game there were several no calls on PI that woudl have been called in the NFL.

I think if they called it fair both ways, I enjoy the college attitude towards officiating. Call the blatant stuff and otherwise let them play.

I enjoy college football more than pro ball at this point. The Bills are the only thing that keep me interested. It’s closer to the form of football I grew up appreciating. The NFL seems more in the entertainment/story line business. I just wish there were more relevant teams in the northeast, creating better fan interest in these parts. Water cooler football talk is always fun, but you don’t get it with college football up here. That’s another factor why I still keep up with the NFL.

Part of why Elam was able to get drafted so high. Was extraordinarily handsy in college and got away with it.

Yeah there is a kid at Ohio State that is the same way.  Got away with a couple today but also had a couple of penalties in the Texas game and a bunch last year too.

I think this year is the year of keeping the games close in the NFL, TV ratings are skyrocketing with close games. Making the networks and content providers happy. We all know that holding can be called on any play, it's the most effective penalty to either stop drive or to keep one going.

Firstly, how was that not an Auburn touchdown? Secondly, clapping? Not calling a timeout? Get the f out of here. Just horrible officiating.

I have noticed that the nose of the ball barely breaking the goal line plane is not being called a TD anymore.

It happened in the jags game where Lawrence leaped and the nose of the ball touched the plane. Of course it happened last night in the auburn game but it was called the exact same way as the jags game.

Breaking the plane is no longer a TD. I hope this doesn't haunt the Bills.

You got me on the Smart timeout call. Looked like he was clearly calling a timeout. Then he told the refs he was clapping so the refs gave him the timeout back

I went to a friends house to watch the Tennessee game they player the Razorbacks and I would have swore I was watching the last Bills game ! The officials were calling every little penalty against the Vols and letting go a lot of calls that the Razorbacks were committing that were the exact same ones they were calling against the Vols .

It doesn't make any sense, if your going to call those against one just be consistent and call it on both it drove me crazy because of the flash back to last week & my buddy was losing his mind because he is a HUGE Vols fan . They need to make these guys accountable in some way to have a certain amount of consistency when calling these games .

And if nothing else use another official for review purposes of some sort, I don't know how they could do it but just do it !! In both college and the NFL ...

I don't think that is a college vs pros thing, I think it is more a group of refs thing.   The biggest issue I see is the variation with the various crews.  The issue is almost exclusively the subjective calls, holding (offense or defense), PI, unnecessary roughness, etc.  Not every human sees it the same then fans react based on if it helps or does not help the team they root for.  I agree with the let them play approach to a point....games are more fun to watch when there are not as many flags.

I noticed that too on the Lawrence fumble. Of course the doubt could be easily eliminated if they actually used the chip they supposedly have in the ball. There's no way that the NFL could not be accurate like tennis or have a perfect line like VAR in soccer where the first down/goal line is . Why are they waiting?

I think it’s because they lose control of massaging games with every new technological breakthrough.

The current excuse is that there’s too many bodies around the football for the sensor to know if it crossed the first down marker or goal line. Which sounds fine on the surface but there seems to be no interest in solving that problem further. One idea being to add sensors under the grass or turf. Or even inside uniforms. The excuse is used as a conversation ender rather than an obstacle to figure out for a greater goal.

To understand the NFL’s attitude, after the Bills got hosed against the Chiefs last year and every casual non-Chiefs fan was up in arms, the NFL said they’re looking into ways to use technology to CONFIRM a ref’s spot. Not tell us the spot, but take the ref’s spot and confirm if the spot crossed the goal line.

It’s the same concept as the chain gang. What does it matter if we’re measuring the spot if the spot was originally decided falsely and subjectively?

That’s how they screw with our heads. But I’ve been watch threads on places like TBD and people are waking up. 75% of fans are suspicious now. This was not the case 5-10 years ago.

As a former HS and College official (16 years) I can fully appreciate the disconnect between College and the NFL.  I personally know 2 NFL officials.  Those guys like the kids who play in the NFL are the cream of the crop.  Literally the best of the best.  There are very few who make the big show. One of the guys I know worked the Super Bowl.  He was soooooo good.  It was like breathing air to him, not only did the game play in slo-mo for him he had the personality to manage HUGE A-HOLE egos on the field.  He was an Ump when they worked behind the D-Line.  The college guys are a notch above the HS guys.  Thats not saying much.  As always in any group situation politics plays a huge part.  So you have good officials and bad ones too.  A major reason why so much doesn't get called at the college level that does in the NFL.

Everyone loves a conspiracy though, so we all tend to - me included - say "OH WE ARE GETTING SCREWED" by the officials.  I was in that camp firmly during the 1st half of the cheats game.  It all basically evens out, not always in every case but on the whole it evens out as far as the calls go.  As much as I hate to admit it when the yellow flies against the Bills and they show the replay 98 times outa a 100, it was the right call.  I remember my first D1 game - HOLY EFFING FAST BATMAN!!!  I just couldn't imagine an entire team of that against another entire team of that.

People do not appreciate how fast the game is and how hard it is to make those split-second calls.

Interesting take however @ToGoGo tech is a wonky thing.....
