I realize Gabe is a major polarizing guy for Bills fans...

But from everything I've read so far he will not be ready for the start of the 2025 season. I'm not sure when he will be ready, but for the sake of argument let's just guess at 4-8 weeks in...

First we have to assume all is going to be good heath-wise... Lets say that checks out...So if...IF we are talking about signing Gabe Davis, putting him on IR to return at basically the NFL minimum...well... I think that is a no-brainer tbh... Look at the Bills WR's right now. Shakir and Samuel have both missed almost all of camp. Last year Shakir, Samuel, and Coleman all missed time and Cooper was banged up... Again, assuming he's healthy, you're not going to be able to pull a Gabe Davis level talent off the PS if someone goes down late in the season.

I know there are a lot of if's... But I can see it making sense... B-)

Yes.

Mack Hollins' replacement is Josh Palmer. If he stays healthy and gets 15 starts and plays 20 games as Mack did, I'm willing to guarantee that he'll easily have more production than 482 yards.

Beyond that, Palmer is a much better WR in every way.

That's the crux of it.

He wasn't going to supercede Shakir, Coleman, Palmer, or a healthy Samuel (with what we're paying him). And we're not going to pay a 2 year 8.4m contract with 3.5 guaranteed for WR5.

For that role, we signed Elijah Moore to a 1 year deal worth 3.5m with 2.5m guaranteed. Moore has elite speed and more production in 4 years than Hollins has in 8. And if we could get out from under the contracts we have for Samuel (who was never supposed to be a 4th WR) and Moore, I think we would. It's likely the bottom of the WR roster gig will be held by Shavers, being paid the bare minimum.

Also, Free Agency isn't a one way street. We can't *force* him to come back. It's not just the Bills who decide whether Hollins stays or doesn't - it's Mack himself and his agents. Who he reportedly told to "find him the best opportunity" and they came back saying New England. Even if we did decide to match the money (which we wouldn't) we'd also have to match the opportunity for playing time, which in New England, isn't the bottom of the WR roster like you said you were comparing him to here.

Mack himself wouldn't (and didn't) turn down the opportunity for the kind of playing time he has in New England (where he could very well end up starting) to be a 4th (at best) or 5th WR with us. Like I said, it didn't make sense from our side to match the money and opportunity New England was offering. And at the same time, it didn't make sense from Mack's side to turn down the money and opportunity New England was offering.

It's really as simple as that.

Thanks  a ton for such a thorough response !

Bills clearly thought the same as you about Mack 😋
We do agree on most points. One of note is getting Moore in the building. He fits what was missing imo.

Samuel really just cannot be healthy long enough to matter for Us.

Davis could be an asset for sure. But his health is the issue for me, not his ability as a BU and an honest weapon on the outside

Thanks again :)

Call me crazy, but I’m starting to buy into our Top 3.

Maybe that all comes crashing down in a couple weeks against Baltimore, but I’m buying into the hope that Coleman is going to be a weapon and that Palmer has another gear with a change of scenery.

I also think Kincaid either breaks out this year or is a dud.  I don’t really see any in-between.

With respect to the bolded (Baltimore), I think that's a really interesting test for week one. Their aggressive, physical defense has generally given the Bills fits over the years. If there is one overarching criticism of Bills pass catchers during this era, it's their inability to beat press-man and to reel-in contested catches. Haven't disruptive, downhill defenses that dare the Bills to beat them had more success against Allen and Co.? Especially in the playoffs?

I'm REALLY fascinated by the Baltimore week one litmus test. Smart money says Bills get rolled, in my opinion. All kinds of weaknesses exposed, again. All our worst fears and suspicions realized in the first game, in prime time, nationwide.

Like you, I do actually see a potential future in which Coleman, Palmer, and Shakir and Kincaid are a formidable unit, but should we really expect them to win against Baltimore's defense? Also, will Brady and Co. give their players enough little schematic advantages to get that production flywheel spinning?

I have no idea if they are thinking lets get Gabe back here or not... maybe its a courtesy look for the future.. maybe they have plans I dont know... but I do think this... until they understand what is going on with Tre there will be no move to sign him...  their hand may be forced to bring in a corner... if Tre is fine, well then they can turn their attention whereever they want...  but I feel right now... the health of Tre needs to be determined before they commit to anything...

It appears that Davis isn't recovering as well as he should be. Wouldn't shock me if he remains unsigned for most if not all of this year.

"Gabe Davis was brought in for a medical follow-up. And when he came in free agency, the Steelers did not like, and subsequently other teams have not liked, what they saw from MRIs or whatever it was that they looked at following that knee injury that ended his season last year,” Mike Prisuta said on 102.5 DVE.

Probably smart due diligence to check in with him on his medicals in mid-August and see if they need a body at WR come mid to late season they will know how far off Gabe could be or if he's just not ready.

Bills were 10-0 at home last year including beating the Ravens and Chiefs. You think they're gonna 'get rolled'? Wow.

Right? It's like people forget other teams are weak, too.

The Chiefs has a suspect OL, 1 very good CB and a mid DB unit otherwise. Aging LBs. Rashee Rice 1 breath away from lifetime ban. Average RBs. Over celebrated QB.

The Ravens have a deck chair QB. Two average TE's. A good improv WR and not much else behind him. Travis Henry at RB is feast of famine on borrowed time. Their D struggled to get rolling until late putting the CB who was up there in years and name escapes me to nickel to turn it around. They lost startkng OL and Cbs.

It's a new season so past success is not indicative of future results. I think "rolled" is a bit of an exaggeration but I could see a loss. The Ravens are very talented and I think some fans (myself included although I am know I am just getting in my head) are just feeling a little ominous about the camp injuries and the lackluster showing in the pre-season. Now I am willing to toss the pre-season we all know that's just fans getting antsy but the camp injuries just seem like a bad omen to me.

I know the injuries have thus far luckily not been season enders but it just feels like the team is really banged up for some reason. I don't know maybe there's just too much information out there. If Shakir is good to go week 1, Tre's injury just needs a week to heal, Mad Max comes back early in the season, and the team doesn't have much else injury wise that should hurt them out the gate. Yes Samuel being banged up might hurt the WR core a bit but Samuel wasn't much of a factor last season and I am bummed about SVPG maybe missing the year or starting on IR the depth on the interior with Anderson isn't bad.

I think fans just see the Bills list of injuries and follow it so closely that it makes us nervous.
