Had a work accident, was rushed to the hospital, pre cellphones. My boss had two numbers to call for O.T. He called one to tell my wife, no answer, he a left message, called the other number, no answer, left a message. I’m in the hospital, drugged a bit, going to need surgery for a body trauma, but I’m ok resting in a bed. My wife shows up, a couple minutes later an another woman does too….

WHOA! You can’t leave us hanging like that! Clearly, you were one of the survivors, but I’m sure we’d all like the rest of the details.

Did Mom bring flowers and meatloaf, or is your wife going 15-20 for offing the new girl?

There was an ambulance behind me on the ride into work this morning and this got me thinking about this question.

Me personally have never had to and never really been close to being in any situations where I would.  But I imagine for anybody that has had to there is probably an interesting(albeit probably sad and disturbing as well) story behind it.

There was a fire in my college dorm building that I called 911 for. I called again at my first job when our student pick-up van drove past a structure fire.  Around that same time I called 911 because a wrong-way driver whizzed past me on I-476 outside Philadelphia. I called a third time when a girl passed out on the court during a middle school basketball game.

My wife called 911 for me when I passed out in our bedroom in the middle of the night. I had food poisoning, was freely flowing from both ends for about 12 hours, and got dehydrated. I got up to get something to drink, tipped my head back to drink from the glass and the darkness closed in. I had enough cognition left to put the glass down on the counter but I woke up on the floor. They sent the two smallest EMTs I have ever seen to my house and I'm a large man (6'3" probably 270 at that time (I'm less now - yay!).  I had to scoot down the stairs on my butt because they couldn't lift me and then they almost dropped the gurney over sideways putting me into the truck.  I caught myself from falling by grabbing the door frame. Needless to say, I haven't eaten anything from that Amish market since.

-edit- I forgot the time I called 911 on a woman in the grocery store who was very clearly extremely drunk and the owner of a car in the parking lot with a large amount of fresh front end damage.  Cops arrived before she was able to get the car moving again.

The 911 repeatedly on hold thing is disheartening.

My wife called 911 for herself several years ago. She has a peanut allergy and had mistakenly eaten a PB M&M while driving down the Jersey Tpk and she didn't have her epi pens with her.  She started having a reaction and called 911.  The dispatcher tried telling her she was having a panic attack - which she very well ALSO may have been at that point - but he dithered on the phone with her so long that she crossed over some sort of 911 dispatch boundary so she got transferred and had to go through the whole thing again.  She stopped at the Clara Barton rest area and they FINALLY sent EMTs to her location.  She was trying to drive herself to the hospital but she would have stopped wherever they told her to stop.  Once the second dispatcher told her to stop there help improved though the first EMT that arrived on scene had no equipment and wasn't able to do anything.  The second group of EMTs arrived a couple minutes later and ended up using two epis on the way to the hospital. I tracked her cell phone going 90mph down a back road in South Jersey so I can imagine she was in great shape. She had a rebound reaction at the hospital and had to be given something else - idk what, I hadn't gotten there yet.  Gooooood times.

Remembered another time. Lived in CA and had just gotten off the Palo Alto side of the Dumbarton Bridge. There is a wide gradual flat curve there (by Meta/Facebook HQ). Could see far ahead. Spoitted one of those short busses on its side with the wheels still turning and the dust still in the air. I tried  calling 911 but got a busy signal.  There were cars pulled over and people running towards it, As I was trying to get through, I heard sirens. Figured the busy signals and the sirens were from everyone calling so I just kept on going. Never saw anything o the tV or in the paper. That was the same spot where Y. A. Tittle was killed in a motor vehicle accident several years later.

Just once.

Got up at about 4:30AM and walked into my kitchen.

Out the window, I could see this huge flame on a neighbor's property about a quarter mile away. Not a house, but I wasn't sure what it was, but it was big as I could see it through the dense woods.

Turned out it was his shed, which had a portable heater in it that torched the thing.

1. About 1998, driving to work a lady tried to cut across traffic to enter the highway ramp.  She got T-boned and flipped her Blazer up on the driver side.

2. Driving home from work and a kid in a Ford Probe who thought it was a Ferrari was driving like an idiot!  I kept up just to see him lose it.  He did when he tried to take an exit from the passing lane and spun it out into a grassy spot and into a huge bush.

3. Where I rehearse for my band is a room they rent out for parties.  There's a bar upstairs and one night the bartender (about 60-65) couldn't get in touch with his girlfriend for a few hours.  He was closing up and asked me to drive him up to his house, about 4 blocks.   He said she was sick with the flu and was afraid to go in to his apartment.  I went in and found her hunched over in the recliner (head at her knees) so I checked for a pulse.  She was cold and no pulse.  I had to go outside and tell him she was gone.   Called 911 and told them.  Sad seeing him on his knees in front of her crying.   Top it off the cop was a dick to him when he was asking him questions about her health.

I have done multiple times. Its usually around car accidents, injuries, medical episodes I've seen.

I was a bit wayward. Wife had suspicions. We were sort of separated. I was kind of splitting time. In the hospital, my eventual ex-wife shows up 1st, my eventual 2nd wife who’ll also eventually be an ex, comes in a bit after. Neither has seen each other. It’s a moment that goes a million m.p.h. yet is frozen. I don’t know what my face looked, but they both knew. Before I could speak, my ex-wife, cool as a cucumber introduces herself to my “friend”, who doesn’t seem thrown off either, does the same. It’s awkward but there’s talking, small chit chat about what happened, my ex leaves, says goodbye, tells me to call her. Then it got interesting….

I’ll keep it brief as possible. I have my surgery, small cracked vertebrae, two ruptured discs. In the hospital 4 days,(’88) meanwhile I can’t move in with my GF she has a roommate, my wife says if I have no where to recover I can stay with her. I move in with my mother. Wife and GF are calling and visiting me there, I’m “with” both and my mother is helping me running cover, but she says I’m out when I’m able. Meanwhile my gf is trying to get her roommate out for me to move in and my wife’s offer still stands and says she doesn’t want to divorce. I have to pick between them but am in no hurry since it was going well. So I get an apartment when I’m healed…..

Let me guess. Your gf is Cartman's mom, who is Cartman's dad, so ergo, you're bisexual?

I never watched South Park ever. But my 2nd wife and I would go down to the other end of Allen, usually Cathode Ray, don’t know if it still there, and be drinking and occasionally she’d find a girl for sort of a fling and go off to wherever nook, room, bathroom. Didn’t bother me, no matter what she’d be going home with me. Mind you we were snow blowers.

I’m afraid this may call for some type of graphics.

It seems your greatest need for 911 may have been after your 911 call, yet here you are. 🤷‍♂️

I am reminded of the Cheers episode.

Lilth: "Cliff, would you be interested in taking part in a university project? No, wait, let me rephrase that. Would you be interested in *being* a university project?"

Yes, but the number 2 thing would make me want to pull over, make sure the kid is alive, then flip him off and say, "serves you right, jerk!" Then, casually get in my car and drive off.

Twice.

Once because a DirecTV guy accidentally backed into a car in LA.  The 4 guys got out of the car and beat the **** guy.  I called 911 and told them they have to get here, gangstas are beating up this guy and I think they could kill him.  4 bald headed, tatted up guys beating up a Korean cable guy.  They didn't kill him, they drove off and the cable guy got up and went into his van.  LAPD never showed up.

Another time because a guy was absolutely hammered drunk on the highway.  He was swerving all over into multiple lanes at 75+ mph.   He wasn't changing lanes, he was just drifting badly, then realized it, pulled hard to get back on track but it was multiple lanes each time.   I don't know the result of that.

it isn't calling the cops but we both ran after a guy who cold clocked a guy at the Texans game. I think you tackled your guy. The guy I went after turned out not to be involved when I grabbed him.

oh, and yes. numerous times.

a few notable:

a car on my land and i went down there looking for who it belonged to at like 1am when i noticed it. after about 10 minutes a guy comes out of the woods without a shirt and says he was down there fishing (there is a river adjacent). a few minutes later another guy came out of the woods and explained they were "noodling" for catfish.

a 1980's corvette had a dishwasher in the back and was swerving on the road at 5am. i called the police because that's just weird. 4 hours later they called me and asked questions.  the guy was high af and just stole a dishwasher and the corvette after doing a home invasion.

was running one time and pushing the stroller with my daughter. ran past a guy ranting and raving on the sidewalk. came back after going a few miles and turning around and he was passed out in the road. i called the police and they came and revived him. i didn't want to leave my daughter to perform cpr nor touch the guy because who knows what he had going on.

I didn't tackle him, I held him by the arm like we were getting ready to lasso dance.

He told me he wasn't the guy that threw the punch, a woman walked up to me and said that he was correct.  I let him go.
