And he was toast

He was.. but is he still?  Tre, at least, has reason to believe he could bounce back now a full season removed from serious injury.

Douglas had no major injury.. he just fell off.. and was a massive liability for us last year.

He doesn't want to get raked over the coals by Josh twice a year. He also knows we run the division and wants no parts of a team going nowhere really.

Tre was toast 2 seasons ago. There was a reason why we moved on.

oh wait

Aren't they both the same player at this point at 30 years old?  I'm not sure if Douglas was willing to take a one year $3m deal with incentives like Tre did.

I think I'd still want Tre regardless.

I'd rather take a gamble on a former All-Pro now 1 year removed from a major injury vs. Douglas who just looked like he didn't have it athletically anymore. He basically fell off a cliff.

Either way I want Hairston to win the job, ideally.

Agreed but I'm not going to hold my breath that he's anywhere close to his pre injury self.  Crazy how two years ago at this time we were wondering if Benford could handle the job opposite Tre White.  The ACL and then the Achilles within two years is just brutal.

Said no to the Dolphins

I think Rasul would be doing the Bills a favor if he suited up 17 games for the Fins next year.

he allowed a 122 passer rating last year when targeted.

Poyer with the Dolphins only allowed 111, for comparison sake.

I think it's unlikely too, but Tre was/is such a technically sound zone corner that I think the dropoff will be less severe than what we just saw with Douglas, who to me played a much more physical style and relied so much on his burst.

I don't know if this is right, but didn't LA have Tre play a ton of man where he was basically on an island? McDermott really doesn't do that often.

My guess is that he's a low to mid end CB2 starter in a zone system or a high end backup. Much better than having to rely on Dane Jackson, Elam, or Levi Wallace anyway.

Yeah my take is if Tre can be better than Elam in the AFCCG, that’s a win.

it begs the question why we hung on to Elam so long for him to ultimately sink our season, but hey.

To be fair, I've never seen Elam play that bad prior to that game.  Same goes for Milano and Hamlin.

As much as I love the idea Douglas hates the Fish, the other problem is the Dolphins have the second lowest cap space, behind us.  Whatever they offered him had to be low.  In addition, I’ll agree he slowed down considerably last year.

Either that said, he’s probably waiting for a time when a team has a critical DB injury and needs him.  Then he is in a better bargaining position as they are desperate with little options.  I’m grateful for Rasul two years ago, and what he tried to do last year.

At the risk of being pedantic. I think it was more that the Bills were upside down on Tre's contract v production due to injury.

I think they would have stood with Tre on another year of rehab at a much lower cost. We're basically seeing them do that right now.

You say that but Douglas had all better metrics than both Dane Jackson and Tre White so if he was toast what are White and Jackson? Douglas would be an upgrade to both of them as sad as that is.

Did he? Rasul Douglas allowed a 122.1 passer rate last season on balls thrown his direction.

Given the opportunity, there was all the reason in the world to not re-sign him and try their luck with White and Jackson and Draft Hairston in the 1st... and Strong in the 6th.

Douglas hit the wall with us and it wasn't even injury related.

Tre allowed 122.8 FWIW.

He was supposedly better when he went to the Ravens but the Ravens also played him a low amount of snaps per game

Mostly playing in a system that didn't fit his strengths in LA. Also coming off of the Torn Achilles. Douglas, had no excuses.

This isn't to say White is going to be great this year. And clearly Hairston is the not so distant future of the position (maybe even as soon as Week 1). But if it's Tre coming back to a system he flourished in a full year removed from all injuries or Douglas who seemingly hit the wall, i'll take my chances with White.

I’ll give Douglas props. He could have lived on the shady sideline and worn a tee shirt that said “I Wish It Was Hotter”, but he passed on that opportunity.

He was better with the Ravens.

Despite being better with the Ravens, he allowed a 122.8 passer rating last year.

Yes, he did. That’s why I said as sad as it is. White was toast last season and Jackson was an abomination but it could have also been scheme fits as well, all we can do is hope.
