Mass media can dish it out, but can't take it?

Over the last few years, it has appeared to me to be more apparent then ever that Mass Media can dish it out when it comes to being negative on folks (maybe even to the point of attacking), but is very thin skinned when someone pushes back negatively on them. 

 

This applies to all mass media, but the recent round of negative items about Brandon Bean (the one on WGR about wide receivers and the more recent about PFF grading) and the ongoing rant on WGR about the Saber GM's comments are what inspired me to start this post.  

 

I see what the mass media is saying about this and it really points out this situation to me. 

 

Is is just me or do you see this as well?

We have this whole gigantic thread about talking heads saying things, so this is nothing new.

 

If "pushing back" means PR damage control or outright lying about their reports, then that isn't having a thin skin, that is defending the truth. We got burned in the Cooper trade and it didn't work out, and our WR corps still isn't anything to write home about even now.

One thing I have noticed from many years of observing the NFL and professional sports is that the media, the GMs, the players... they're all people.  And they do people things.

Only 3 guys prepare for their show. One refuses to learn anything before he was born. They all play victim when they are accused of anything. Golf talk is boring. Personal golf talk induces coma. They contribute to nepotism. Did I forget anything?

Everything in life is cause and effect. The reason media is the way the OP observed is that there’s very little true reporting or investigative journalism being done. That sort of thing takes lots of time and costs lots of money. What we have instead is people just spouting opinions or repeating other people’s opinions. With a plethora of outlets competing for attention each story burns red hot for a week and then the circus packs up and moves on to the next car accident. The only remaining question is whether it’ll reach such a critical mass that it completely folds in on itself and/or explodes in supernova.

There's plenty of true reporting. Maybe not a ton of deep reporting, but that's not really as much on the media as it is what people say and how often they talk.

 

Investigative journalism? Yeah, not much, but there's not much of a way to do that in football. Reporters only get access at PCs, there are NFL rules about what can be reported and what can't. In every field public figures have learned how to keep reporters away. What are they gonna do? The science of public relations has taken over and public figures don't take risks or reveal much. This does indeed result in a lot of shallow stuff, boring stuff. 

 

The NFL doesn't seem to mind.

100%! I grew up with 3 newspapers a day. 

But now, haven't watched any news unless I'm stuck in an airport or a restaurant.

 

Am I ignorant about many news items? Yes

Am I less stressed and irritated? Yes

 

I'm not embarrassed that this board is the most I read by far for news than anything else. 

 

When I feel the need I go find the news I want & commenters often can provide intelligent feedback & research.

 

I will be using that Denzel quote.

That's right up there with Morgan Freemans interview with Mike Wallace.
