I seriously doubt this is an issue of Max not knowing the Defense well enough yet. For 6 weeks, he's had nothing to do but rehab the knee and study the Defense- not to mention all the time he had before the injury. We all know McD is a stickler (to a fault) about defensive players knowing the playbook & responsibilities, so it could be just his usual concern & not an actual issue.

Yeah, he's still a ways out. Every drill is moving in a straight line, no cutting or shifting of body mass side to side allowed. I wonder when he's allowed to start that kind of stuff. I don't see him playing in any games anytime soon!

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but I wonder if this is an injury that requires surgery. And if it does, instead of pushing the kid to return with a bandaid, at what point do you put his long term success as a priority and get the surgery done now?

Otherwise you maybe bandaid through the season, surgery over the offseason, and he limps through another year.

Even if he doesn't have surgery, it seems like being a step behind in recovery YoY is a possibility.

Thats wild speculation on your part...what would indicate he needs surgery right now?

I still have high hopes for the kid, and by that, I mean, make some type of impact for the playoffs. We've shifted to a more aggressive style defense, with more 5 man rushes, and man to man coverage. If mad max becomes who we thi know he's capable of being, he could become the perfect compliment to Benford.

Benford is your physical technician, and Mad Max can be used against the leaner/speeder types.

You draft players for multiple years, not just one.   A lot of complaints coming from fans about this, but the Bills have done a great job of not willingly putting their players in bad positions.   Whats best for the player is whats best for the team.   Heard a lot of media guys talking about the reinforcements coming but to expect players to come in and make a giant difference having not played football for months is a little odd.

It is an internet message board. Isn't this the place to speculate?

Maybe he doesn't need surgery. But it isn't uncommon for guys to "limp" through the season only to get offseason surgery.

With or without surgery, my point regarding Hairston remains the same. Heading into week 4 he doesn't seem to even be able to move laterally yet. This has been going on since June 11. That is a lot of time to still be so far away. At some point trying to get him on the field this year you start borrow time and preparation from next year. That is with or without Surgery.

Hes coming into week 6 of being injured -- hes doing what it is expected for recovery right now is the point.

Oh I see...internet message board excuse.  Stick with your take, some are more educated takes than others and dont expect a player to be doing alot of lateral drills at this point of recovery.

We aren't borrowing anything from next year.  Thats just ridiculous.  Max had a serious injury to his knee, one that didnt require surgery though.  McD comments today were crystal clear--- hes not close to a return and needs to prove hes mentally/physically capable of a roster spot.

IMO, no doubt he will be back in a few weeks.  But im thinking it will align post-bye week.

McDermott literally just said there is a chance he doesn't come back this year. At this point, surgery can't be ruled out. That isn't wild speculation that is actually an intelligent question given we know that McDermott often under sells how significant injuries are.

It also wasnt June 11th -- where is that info coming from?

Max doesnt need surgery is the thing.

If he did, he would have had it already - he didnt though

I’m not expecting anything out of Hariston this year. He’s missed too much time. This a redshirt year for him.

I think he could be a key piece for a stretch run if he's able to come back which we will have to see. This team could use another corner and esp one with speed. If this team keeps piling up wins early and gets a massive division lead that could leave room for some margin of error to get Mad Max some play time esp towards the middle and end portion of the season and get him up to speed and fully shake the rust off.

Maybe the Bills are waiting to see if there are long term injuries at CB during the course of the season (i.e., opening the return from IR window for Max only after another long term injury occurs at the CB position).  This would make sense if they are concerned about the need to release players on the current active roster as players come back from IR and suspension.
