Josh Allen 2024 Salary Cap Hit - 30 million

Jalen Hurts 2024 Salary Cap Hit - 13 million

That's a lot of extra benjamins the Eagles had to spend on defense.

And it reminds me that the timing of Covid sucked for the Bills. Because it meant the last two years of Josh's really low cap hits when they knew he was unequivocally the guy and should have been loading up around him they were instead dealing with salary cap reductions because of the impact of Covid on revenues. It really did come at the worst possible time for what Beane was doing in terms of his long term roster management plan.

I didn’t know that.  I thought Hurts had a mega-contract.

No one is interpreting the meme as implying that. They are correctly seeing it as an indictment of the Bills' defense.

There’s no need to “indict” the Bills’ defense.  It’s already been found guilty, beyond a reasonable doubt, of playoff incompetence.

Well, I found the specific quantitative comparison particularly elucidating with regards to playoff failures. Of course, it is accentuating what it already known.

Personally, I think it's an indictment of Sean.   I was all in going hard on defense in the draft.    Have we had massive injuries all 4 times?  D is supposed to be his wheelhouse, I haven't seen when it counts most.  The superbowl also showed it can be done, don't want to hear about excuses.

While I’m not a big fan of the soft scheme, specifically last season’s talent level was atrocious.  I’d argue the only guys who even stand a chance to start on another team in the secondary are Benford and Johnson.  He got a lot from a little, but it eventually caught up.

C’mon, man, don’t be obtuse.  When people chirp about Jalen Hurts having a SB ring and Josh Allen hasn’t been to one, stats like this provide some perspective.  Nobody thinks Allen and Hurts play defense.

I agree... I havent independantly verified this.. but geez... if its accurate this is pretty telling.

To my knowledge, neither plays defense.

And it’s not exactly a newsflash that the Eagles’ defense is better than Buffalo’s.

It sounds like you are looking at this as a stat about the QB's.  It is not that.  It IS a stat about how defense being effective or not can shape the outcome of a game, regardless of QB play.  It is a defensive stat that just uses the QB's to identify relatable events that can easily illustrate the impact .

Yeah, that's a bummer, man. I've felt like for a while now that the ol' Walrus just has Sean's number. It just seems like they always have the perfect play dialed up at the perfect time.

I also feel like if Benford doesn't go out of the AFCCG it's probably a little different.

Lastly, I really wouldn't mind *not* seeing KC in the playoffs haha.

The Eagles did to Mahomes what the Bucs did.  They both put tremendous pass rush pressure on Mahomes by rushing only 4 guys.

It was like watching fabled D-lines of yore. The “Fearsome Foursome” “Purple People Eater” “Steel Curtain”…..

It was a thing of beauty.

Every team faced the same obstacles, and Beane did load up on talent when Allen was on a rookie deal.

But not every team was right in that window. That was the point. The idea window for loading up around a QB now is years 3, 4 and 5 of the rookie contract. The Bills did in year 3, they went to the AFCCG and lost. But then the knock on covid impact meant years 4 and 5 they could not push all the chips in on the cap in the way, for example, that the Eagles did in 2022, 2023 and 2024.... which were years 3 to 5 for Hurts and resulted in two Superbowl appearances and one title. So while the obstacles faced were the same for all, not every team is at the same point of their salary cap cycle. And it was absolutely the worst timing for the Bills. Based on the average cap increases in the run up to those years it cost the Bills about $12m room to manouvre in 2021 and $15m room to manouvre in 2022.

The eagles showed how to beat Mahomes. Press his outside receivers (so he can’t complete the quick pass) and get strong pressure with 4DL.

it’s not that Bills weren’t smart enough to figure this out. They didn’t have the players.

That’s why Bills now have 4 new CB and 6 new DL.

Thank you for explaining.  The huge photos of both QB’s in the OP made me think that perhaps the point was that Jalen Hurts is a better defensive player than Josh Allen is.

Do we know that he isn't? That's the question!

It's too bad we don't have a defensive coach who worked for Andy Reid and knows his tendencies so he could stop him
