Mister Defense Posted July 10 Posted July 10 (edited) 1 hour ago, boater said: So the Bills will have one of the highest paid QB's in the NFL, and also the one of the highest paid running backs. That's a lot of salary cap for two players. I don't want to hear any complaints when they have to skimp at other roster spots. Yes, I and most others hope so. But the difference between the two parties has always been a few million dollars--not a very big amount in the NFL, of course. Even the top running backs, just cracking 20 million, are not even close in pay scale, still, with other positions. No banks will be broken when Cook signs his new deal in the coming days. 3-4 years, averaging 14 or so million a year? About 55 for four years. A top quarterback, like we have, makes about a quarter of a billion dollars for those four years. Yet you lump them together as it they are the same--they are not even close, A few million dollars will not cause the Bills to skimp on other roster spots. And they have a slew of young, much cheaper defensive talent about to earn some roster spots this year and next. Plenty of money. And I am certain Beane has used this in his renewed push to get this nonsense settled, and soon. So, lighten up! The Bills are soon going to sign their best offensive player outside of their quarterback and have this literal dynamic duo on their team for years, breaking more records each year, and taking the Bills to the promised land. The Bills will get it right. Just like so many of the other great teams in NFL history have done--Kelly/Thomas, Aikman/Smith, Bradshaw/Harris, Montana/Craig,, Staubach/Dorsett, Griese/Morris, Warner/Faulk, Hurtz/Barkley... Notice the pattern? That is not a coincidence, that so many of the best teams in NFL history are known by their quarterback and running back combination. With your logic, those teams, with one of the highest payed QBS and running backs, had it all wrong. I think they had it right. Like the Bills will have it shortly. rocky61 Posted July 11 Posted July 11 This seems simple enough...tell our running back to get back in tune with the team, and believe in yourself as a TEAM player. Play better than last season, and the Bills will give you close to what you want, for the following seasons, a long term deal will work out. Prove you are worth what you want, it's still a little high, but, you and the team management can work things out this off season coming...This could mean several trips to the BIG game. You stop complaining, and just do your job. If you get a trade you want, oh, they will give you that trade but, it will be to a team rebuilding, or has no chance to even make to the play-offs and this is your best shot for that elusive ring. Just sayin'... 1 8 1 1 Quote

If it were me, I’d tell the agent you’re client has a few choices… 1. Take a 2 year $20 mil. And $15 guaranteed. 2. He plays out his contract, and we intend to tag him. That will probably between this year the next secure him $19 mil. 3. Sign the tag, and sit out the year, get older, make no $, and don’t accrue another year towards retirement. Those are youre options. Pick 1. Id hope he’d accept the tag as no matter what we have him for 5 years, and the shelf life of most RB’s not name Henry after 27 yrs. Old. 1 Quote

Look at how much the cap has been going up YoY with streaming taking hold. Additionally, it doesnt look like Beane/Brady are looking to bring in a #1 WR that commands $30M+/year, nor do we have any young WR that will command as much anytime soon, so that opens 2 more spots at $15M/yr (Cook and McGovern for example). If we need to "skimp" at other spots like TE and not paying Knox $10-15M/yr, or #4 WR and not paying Curtis Samuel $8-10M/yr for his non-contributions, then so be it. The Eagle extensively use "void years" salary cap voodoo. They haven't been impacted yet, but there are dark clouds in the years ahead for them. Agree, Knox and Samuel are overpaid. Quote

Give me a Bills SB win and this team can go 2-15 the next 5 years for all I care. 1 1 Quote

To each their own. The Jets SB victory brings no joy today to anyone in their right mind, and that was an historic game. Quote
Low Positive Posted July 11 Posted July 11 I realise that we’re supposed to clown on this thread, but I want to respond. Cook didn’t hold out! He was a full participant at Minicamp and isn’t causing problems in the locker room. He’s making social media noise, which annoys fans, but he is going to play regardless. For this season, this is a non-story. Do I wish that it was a WR who was so good that he had outplayed his contract and was making harmless noise for more money? Yes. Yes I do. Quote

Now that doesn't mean I want to go through decades of crap football like Jets fans have. But if the Bills have to go through 5 tough seasons after winning the Super Bowl before becoming a good team again. Sign me up for that. 1 Quote

I guess I am one of those tight wads, the baseline comparison for me are the above average RB who make about 5 million a year--Ray Davis is an example, making $1.2 million a year. Ray Davis isn't as good as James Cook, but he's still pretty damn good. So I'm looking at great RB making 14 or getting a pretty good RB making less than 5. When you only have $95K in open cap (https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/buffalo-bills/overview) you have to give some serious thought to being a value shopper. Quote

Folks thought them loading up for multiple SB runs from 2018-2021 and jettisoning a lot of picks meant the dark days were coming. In fact, they saw 2022 as the beginning of the end with a 5 win record (Stafford was hurt). The facts of the matter is that the Rams both went “all in” and remained competitive. They had a down year once. But since 2017, that has been their only year with a losing record. Would the Rams have won any way if they didn’t trade all their picks? Maybe. But it’s bird in the hand. If our next 5 years look like the Rams last 5, I’d take it in about 2 seconds. 2-15 is not really on the table. 1 Quote
