Chiefs Bills Playoff Replay / Bass Kicking

Thank you. One of the most overrated, over discussed topics associated with this regime. Matt Haack is a joke of a NFL punter, but supposedly some sort of holding specialist. Give me a break with the holder talk. Just kick the damn ball through the uprights like you’re paid to do.

Of course you never want to punt because it’s a failed drive, but Haack is the new Jordan Gay (kick off specialist) and it’s just a waste.

Bodork says hi.

Sam Martin has been in the league 11 years.  If he was horrible at holding he would have been out of the league a long time ago.

I have said 50,000 times on other threads

There is nobody in the world that makes a bigger deal about holding than the people here LOL

It is a very easy skill to learn

There has never been a punter who has been cut because of lack of holding skills... I repeat a holder has never been cut because lack of holding skills

People called Corey b terrible at holding here.. yet his new kicker and Cleveland calls him the best holder he's ever had

It's not rocket science... It's easy to learn with repetition

Bass is in his own head

I was going to bring up the golfing analogy as well.

He's developed a hook that can be worked out in TC.

But it's very difficult to work out while you're playing

There are alot of golf similarities with kicking.  Tempo, foot path (club path), foot open...face open you will fade kicks right.  This is 100% not a holder problem.  Matt's technique is screwed up.

Cant judge on mere speculation, that's for sure. And I dont know about any injury.

But there were definitely some classic McD situational weird decisions in the beginning of the season that could have easily knocked the kid off track. The Denver game comes to mind, although I dont remember the exact situation. I remember being frustrated with his decisions on when to not just take the easy points, but then later on throw Bass out there on a long kick he clearly was not going to make.

Has there ever been a coach who was not questioned…….about something? It goes with the territory.  If it works you’re a hero, if it fails you are an idiot. I stay toward the middle (as I think you know), so nothing is ever too far away from my position forcing me to freak out. I prefer life that way for the most part.

I would be too, which is why I am not in panic mode over Bass.

A number of fans actually believe we lost the Chiefs playoff game because of Bass. They obviously did not watch that game.

Has Bass really hit the wall? After one unspectacular season?

the problem is was worse than unspectacular last season

he was bottom of the league awful

combine that w the fact that he's never had a spectacular season ie top 10 in fg%

Overall, I think he's been a very good Kicker for us.

People here saying that we desperately need a new Kicker on the team is a big overreaction.

I think that it's fair to give Bass another chance.

Also, he's 205/210 on XP attempts. That's pretty good considering that extra points are no longer "chip shots" anymore.

he's a career sub-85% guy on fgs

any given year thats going to put you in the bottom half of the league

i'll give him some grace for kicking in OP but that barely moves him up to average imo

there is no way i can call him anything close to very good

Are you saying he needs to be replaced, immediately?

NFL Network showing a replay of Chief-Bills playoff game and got me thinking again about Bass' performance. Throuout most of his career he was nicknamed "Bass-O-Matic", but in this game he not only missed the field goal at the end of the game with a wicked slice, he barely made 2 extra points with the same slice (worse than my driver-- and that's bad)

Has anyone done a deep dive on why the downturn? I'm curious if there was a hold issue, technique issue, or injury issue.

Has to be more than a mis-hit with three of them in one game.

At least so far, the Bills don't seem too concerned as they haven't announced anyone they are bringing in for a tryout.

Bass is not our guy anymore. When kickers have down seasons and then miss chip shots in big spots in the postseason, it’s a crisis of confidence. Why not bring in some unconscious, automatic star from a college and call it a day with Bass. We can’t let this guy destroy us. These guys play too hard and care too much to let Sean’s loyalty and hoping and wishing he gets good again.

If we have to let our punting game suffer because our 5-million-dollar kicker needs a special holder for his kicks, its time to find a new kicker.

I have very little patience for a highly paid guy not doing the one thing a team asks him to do well.

Exactly. If the Bills were ever in a must have it position in the playoffs again, I would have zero confidence that Bass would come through. The holder discussion nonsense reeks of excuse making for a kicker who is supposedly top tier. He should have no margin for error at this point.

Once again, we don’t have all the information, so I’m not sure what the HC has faith in. I can’t judge the kicker or the HC based upon mere speculation. Was he dinged up? Did he develop the yips? I don’t know what the problem was. I just hope Bass comes back 100% healthy and returns to his old form.

that he seemingly lost his leg mid season sure does indicate a possible injury

but if hurt why in the world didn’t they pick someone up and let him heal for a bit?

if not hurt, they seemingly lost a ton of confidence in him which is also worrisome.

it’s a lose-lose for evaluating last years results but hopefully he plays better this year

As terrible as that game situation was we just as a fanbase gotta move on.

honestly that kick worries me less than how they used him the entire back half of the season

Missing a 27 yd FG to lock down a playoff game against Pitt with an amateurish duck hook and then effectively ending our season with that clueless slice on a 40 yd chip shot is not nothing. He WAS a good kicker. That’s what happens with kickers. All of a sudden they’re a liability. If you think the rest of the team can stay committed when a kicker starts blowing automatic kicks you’re just not being realistic. It also changes the strategy of an offense. When you see kickers like the ones on Balt, KC, Cinn., Miami, you realize legitimately teams can’t accept mediocrity. These spirit killers rarely rehabilitate themselves.
