Logic's Buffalo Bills Draft Review -- The more things change, the more they stay the same

This draft reminds me a lot of the first McDermott draft, where it seemed the bills placed high priority on character, locker room fit, leadership and college production

Slight change from when the bills were draft more on athleticism and potential the last couple years

We're back to rebuilding the foundation. We had some pretty good teams for a few years there where the foundation had already been built, and so we were able to shoot for upside with guys like Cook and Kincaid. Hopefully, we can get back to being so good we can afford to do that stuff again.

I can understand those that think this draft was meh or a disaster, we didn't even take 2 WR's in an offseason where we lost both our #1 and #2 guys. For me though I feel like we added competition just about everywhere and some starters as well. WR Keon Coleman will 100% be fighting for a starting role in some capacity whether thats outside or inside. S Cole Bishop imo will take over the role of Jordan Poyer I believe, maybe not right off the bat but I wouldn't doubt it since this kid's instincts are just awesome. Dewayne Carter is more of a backup to Ed Oliver as he had over 1200 snaps in the 3 tech but he did have 250+ snaps in 3 years as the 1 tech also so I'm interested to see where they think he'll fit but he'll be part of the rotation. Some wanted more competition at RB and we added thumper Ray Davis coming off a 21 total TD season. Both Van Pran-Granger and Grable should add solid depth along the OL, The International OT is almost definitely a practice squad candidate but I always liked when teams took fliers on those types so I'm excited for him.Solomon is a pass rush specialist so learning under Miller will be excellent for him.

I know all of this is a little too positive or optimistic for some right now so I totally understand all the puke/thumbs down and dislike emojis I'm about to receive but to me this draft was about fielding a competitive roster and I think Beane added guys who could easily bring out the competition level at some of the positions. I'm hoping we incorporate more passes out of the backfield, more bubble screens that go for actual yardage instead of everyone knowing Diggs is going to get the ball. I think we'll definitely pick up a veteran WR along the way but I have to believe Beane when he says a"A big trade isn't coming" so I'll be keeping an eye out post June 1st.

Kelvin "I don't want to warm up with you rookie QB" Benjamin? Andre Holmes....really? Robert Foster UFDFA, John Brown 5'10, Lil Dirty have you seen the mannequin, Sanders 5'11 and like 33/34 years old.

How were any these guys high talent big bodied WRs? Hell the closest one was Robert Foster because he was 6'2 but he was an UDFA that's never caught on anywhere, though the highlight of his entire career was catching passes from Josh ***** Allen.

I'm surprised you didn't bring up Bills legend Duke Williams he'd at least be the right type of WR if still a guy brought in from the CFL.

True or false: The most successful connections Josh Allen has forged in his NFL career have come with smaller bodied (relatively speaking) WRs whose strengths are route running and separation.

The Bills spent their first pick in the draft on a WR and let Josh Allen have a say in the choice. How would that make him frustrated? I think he got tired of the drops and wanted a guy with good hands. I would have taken Mitchell, but then again I don’t have to coach or play with the guy.

This has been a process for me. Before the season ended, I wanted Coleman or Leggett because I wanted a big guy who catches almost the balls thrown his way. Then I started listening to you people, and I became a big Franklin guy. I was the all hyped for Worthy after the combine, but then I reconsidered. He almost certainly worked with track coaches for a month to get that time. It’s all in the start. I think it’s very telling that he declined doing any other drills. That’s because he didn’t train for them. When you watch him play, he’s fast but not Tyreek fast and he drops balls. So then, I was and still am a Ladd guy. But I guess I can’t complain because if you had told me back in January that the Bills would have drafted Coleman I would have been very happy. So I choose to be hopeful. At the very least he should go a long way in solving the red zone problems.

there is never going to be an NFL draft that checks all the boxes for every fan.  We all want to Win a super bowl. The variables needed to get there are the Rub.

I've been reading Logic for years and the fact he is very MEH about this draft does concern me.  Pine Barrens Mafia one of the most negative voices.  I would love to see some crow eating after the coming season which would mean they were wrong. There is zero shame in that.  That crow will taste DELICIOUS  mateys 🙂

I guess I'm also a person who just wants my team to consistently contend. Maybe it's because I started rooting for the Bills in the early 80s, and thus spent my formative 20s in the midst of the drought and having the Rob Johnson/Dough Flutie Bills be the best teams since the SB years.

At this point, I think coaching and GMs job is just to keep your roster contending for a championship, and anything after that is basically a crapshoot that's gonna come down to super specific matchups, luck, and the occasional transcendent talent coming through.

This draft, the cap manuevers, and increased top 5 round picks, will keep the bills contending for another 5+ years, and that's all, I, as a fan, can ask for

I'd love to know who the high talent big body guys they've put on this team with Josh Allen we have to make this assessment that he doesn't do well with them. From my memory Josh Allen does well with short shifty WRs because Josh Allen has short shifty WRs.

I had exactly the same question.

The only big-bodied WR I can recall Josh Allen having on the Bills was Fat Kelvin Benjamin, for 12 weeks during which he seemed RIP (retired in place), with the league's worst catch rate of 35%.  It wasn't just Josh Allen, either, since after the Bills cut him the Chiefs (with Pat Mahomes on pace for an MVP season) picked him up, and couldn't get anything out of him.

The OP, and many of the folks who are contributing to this thread, begin by conceding that it was a solid draft. That's stipulated at the beginning. Did you read it, because your response is addressed to those who assert something else? And I don't see an abundance of negative emojis . . .

I guess my thing is that Josh’s most successful season (2020) was with Cole Beasley playing at his best. We had the chance to duplicate that with McConkey and we didn’t do it.

yea that's not who Ladd profiles as.

Shakir, Coleman, and Samuel all have the trait that made Cole so effective and that is good hands with a good catch radius. But I did want Ladd going into last night and seeing him go the very next pick stung a bit.

This is such a confusing statement to me.

Which player drafted 28 and later would make you stand up and say that?

OP wanted thrm to sell all picks and get in top 20 and get one of those 3 top WRs thinking thst is the missing piece

this teams need to add depth…drafting safety and interior off/ def line isn’t sexy enough.

folks on here do not understand therr is a salary cap….

look across the league, the teams that have stayed good for a long time rely on youth/ picks because you need this picks to balance out the club salary structure.

IT'S A TRICK!

It's true, but meaningless; what big-bodied WR catch meister WR has Allen had the opportunity to form a connection with? The only one I can think of is 2018 Fat Kelvin, who, as I noted above, was RIP at the time with the only pass he was interested in being preceded by "puff, puff,..."  He had the lowest catch rate in the league at the point where we released him, commentators had been noting his lack of effort on the field for weeks, and neither the Mahomes-led Chiefs nor the Giants

@Logic, you started this out by stating "Josh Allen has historically thrived with fast, shifty WRs who separate well, and has not clicked with big-bodied guys who struggle with separation."  When, other than rookie year with Fat Kelvin, in Josh's 6 years in the league, has he played with "big bodied WR", whether they struggle with separation or not?

Leading up to the awesome quote by Booger McFarland - "He's a Popeye's biscuit away from being a tight end".

True. Do you grant that my statement is also true?

If so, the sum total of those two true statements would seem to be "The Bills should continue to draft smaller bodied WRs whose strengths are route running and separation.

i think this draft sucked! There, I said it. I do like Solomon, but considering  we will draft 25-32 in each round next year, while having 2 second rd. picks..and some money to spend, I think Beane has zero balls...period. We sat from 33 to 60 to 95 and did jack *****. That is the most lame stretch by any Gm that could be possible.

There were multiple teams with 2  2s and 2 3s and we couldn't pull off a deal with one of our late rd. 2025 picks? This draft really changed my mind on Beane...less.
