Confusion about NFL's gambling policy extends to ownership

Quote

On his comfortability with the NFL’s gambling policy

“Once the Supreme Court made its decision, gambling is here. The league’s position on it has been: Protect the game at all costs, which obviously is absolutely critical. And all the ramifications of that in terms of club personnel, players, betting—I haven’t even walked into a casino [in Las Vegas this week]. I don’t want to be seen there. Theoretically, if I wanted to go to the slots I could—I’m not even sure. … But it is what it is. The league will be a participant, and they are a participant in all the economics that have come out of it. Hopefully, the league is being sensitive and promoting responsible betting, because we all know that some of these things can become addictions.

A gambling/game fixing scandal is inevitable.

If so, the NFL brought it on themselves in their infinite greed. They made their bed and now they'll have to lie in it.

I actually don't think there will be in the nfl, besides the things we have already seen from a handful of players

Guys get paid way too much money, where fixing a game isn't worth the risk or the amount of money you would have to bet would be very noticeable quickly

I think a lower level/mid major college or in the usfl/XFL it's very much on the table and only a matter of time

The NFL made all these deals with the prop bet sites, etc. it's their own fault. Those sites are going to bring down the fun of sports as it is now turning into "wagertainment." Combined with the corporate takeover of the league it'll be like NASCAR.

The final kick in the crotch will be all of these NIL babies getting their ass beat by the NFL players.

Heavy gambling has been taking place for at least half a century on NFL games. If, or when, that happens will have nothing to do with legal gambling.

This is a very basic way of thinking about organized gambling and fixing.

You think a boxer going down in the 10th for a briefcase of cash is the extent of fixing?

There was a recent suspension in the NHL where one player (Shane Pinto) got suspended for HALF the season but the NHL was very nebulous on what he exactly did and made a blanket statement that he "did not bet on his own team".

Through people I know, what had happened is he had his friend make a bunch of "prop bets" on him and he went out of his way to meet them (i.e. number of shots per game, hits, points, etc.)

This is going to happen more and more.

It's the way of the world, to push the line a little more, then a little further, until you have a sh*t show on your hands. All the sports league that allow gambling on their games are tempting fate.

Also not every NFL player makes that much. (Especially after taxes, agent fees, insurance, etc.) Some bottom-of-the-roster guy will be tempted eventually.

I think you would need to see a guy blackmailed with drugs, affairs, OTHER UNRELATED GAMBLING Offenses that he doesn’t want made public etc… at the nfl level.
