which option is better for 2023 & beyond

I don't think we need to do anything extreme like trading Diggs, that is counter productive to what we're trying to do. We're on the cusp of a SB but there are some teams also there as well so it's never going to be easy. Build the OL through the draft and FA if we don't sign Edmunds we probably have enough to sign 1 big ticket FA OL like a RT McGlinchey, OG Ben Powers or draft a few as well. We will then need to re-sign a player like AJ Klein, he knows the system and shouldn't be all that expensive plus we draft a guy and have them battle it out in camp. I'd see if Benford can actually play S first before anointing him the starter there, if not draft 1 and let him compete with Marlowe or another guy in FA. The only way we have a shot at the SB is by keeping Josh alive and well so we want the best 5 guys we can get blocking in front of this man. We can create more cap easily so this shouldn't be an issue but lets stop the "trade Diggs" talk for now, that's just creating gigantic problems that we don't really need imo.

I'd say reset like the Chiefs, but not by trading Diggs due to his accelerated cap hit.

-Let Poyer walk

-Let Edmunds walk

-Trade Oliver

Remake the Defense.  The core of Edmunds/Poyer/Oliver has run it's course and that money needs to be re-allocated to the Offense.

-Sign a mid-tier vet FA MLB

-Sign a proven situational pass rusher like Melvin Ingram

-Transition Benford to S and bring back Marlowe as insurance/depth

-Draft a DT, S and Day 3 CB

Tying up 25M+ in Oliver and Edmunds next year is cap malpractice.  Neither of them bring us any closer to a Super Bowl appearance.

Sign two above average OL Free Agents so Josh has proven protection, also draft an OL

Sign a WR and/or draft a WR

Day 3 RB

We have options, but it's going to take bold moves by this Front Office.  Or we can remain held cap hostage by paying absurd money to a DT and MLB.

This is a good post.

Ideally we could be clever enough to Tag/Sign Edmunds and then trade him straight up for a WR or a 1st if anyone would do that.

I'd like Melvin Ingram. If for nothing else, the guy has wreaked havoc against us. Plus he'd be cheap.

We need to fix the OL in a similar fashion to how KC did.

Trade for a T

Sign a G
Draft a C

The cap situation will always be manageable. Need to stop this talk. Players get released, contracts restructured. Happens all the time. Every year someone says the Bills won't be able to sign anyone and Beane ends up signing players he wants.

My general take: The Bills have built their best rosters (2020-2023) at the absolute worst possible time.

I know, hopefully we suck again soon and won't have to worry

I see the idea of trading Diggs but what is the dead cap that comes with doing that?

It's literally impossible...The Cover 1 guys said it's a 37 million dead cap hit last night. I thought it was actually a little more than that...No matter...Impossible. B-)

Impossible and idiotic.  He’s still a top 5 WR.  Josh and Diggs are the only reason we’re better than a .500 team.  Anybody else on the roster besides those 2 is expendable. If Diggs wants to play with his brother in Dallas, then they can give us Parsons for Diggs.  Short of that, it would take one of their O-Lineman plus their 2023 1st rounder.

How does trading diggs help us get better? He’s our Kelce.

We're not trading Diggs under ANY scenario.  Too big a cap hit and because of age we're not getting what some would expect on a trade. He's literally our only reliable and consistent offensive weapon.  After him the drop-off is big at Davis or Knox.  We absolutely must land either an early round wr or FA.  Then go heavy on OL.

What if the 49ers offered us McCaffrey, Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo for Diggs and a 1st this season and a 2nd in 2024? I am sure I could find other scenarios but are any of them likely, no, but wouldn't say under ANY scenario.

I agree with everything you are saying here, but I don't trust them to follow this advice.

This is probably the #1 thing I will be interested in following this off-season.  Are these guys really going to pay Oliver and Edmunds?  If so, forget it.

The lay of the land suggests we will almost certainly regress a bit next year.  We need to regroup and try to make a solid shot at it in 2024.

The OP isn't suggesting trading Diggs because he's not good enough.

Presumably the trade would only be made if it is believed that it makes us better.  If it makes us better, we're better.

But I don't like the idea of trading Diggs either.

Here’s a different way to look at it.  Vegas sees only 5 legit Super Bowl contenders.  There’s a huge drop off after the Chiefs, Eagles, 49ers, Bengals, and Bills.  Whatever of those teams get the 1 seeds will have to play, at most 2 of those teams to win the Super Bowl.

This team rises and falls on the back of Josh Allen. His contract makes him both the long term plan and long term answer. You protect him behind a new, young offensive line, so that they grow together as a unit over the remaining years of Allen’s contract. Everything else is a distant second. If Josh is truly the generational player the organization thinks he is, then you look to him to make the receivers and running backs better.

Not a fan of the copy the Chiefs idea, unless you want to count on whoever is on the schedule the next week somehow needing their backup qb as a starter. They had a lot go their way in 2022 even with what looked like a hard schedule.  Also its not that they had a buch of nobodies. I can't stand Kelce but he is a big difference, and Ju-Ju wasnt a nobody either. Diggs is a must have/keep.
