Beerball has a thread for Mess fans.

 

With all the money Steven A. spent the past two offseasons.........if they Mets this season up like they spectMetsily did last year.......it will be another Metsic failure.

 

But I'm not rooting for that..........hopefully the Mess do well and it puts some pressure on shallow pockets Hal to stop dickin around with the luxury tax thresholds and just do what's best for the team on the field.    

 

They make 10x+ the profit of the average MLB team it's distasteful to get near the thresh and start trying to money-ball their way into wild card contention in a league with no cap. 

 

On the plus side.........the farm system is very good and love the coaching/instruction they are giving players.......Matt Blake has been a life saver as pitching coach..........hopefully in a couple years they won't need to spend so much of Hal's precious cash and can start winning the AL East once in a while.

Stanton and Rizzo off to great starts.

 

The team will only go as far as the HR's and Blake's bullpen takes them.

 

Their system has been loaded with right handed arms for a few years.......the young starters haven't really materialized.......but they have 6-10 very good arms that are ready to contribute and they can shuttle back and forth to Scranton to keep the pen fresh.   Only downside with that pen depth is that they can only shuttle a guy 5x this season under new CBA.

 

IKF looking real shaky at SS though.........he has 2 errors now and also bobbled a DP ball yesterday that nearly cost them..........this after he had 19 errors there last year......same as the unplayable Gleyber Tortoise.   With his shaky bat IKF future may be back at catcher if he ain't pickin' it at SS.    Switch hitting SS Oswaldo Cabrera could be up soon if IKF can't get his glove workin right.   He doesn't have much hittability but can field and run and has real good pop from left side.

Cold night with the ball not carrying well = no HR's = no win

 

The recent iterations of Yankee teams are not built to win by putting runners on base..........they do not make enough contact, hit for enough average and most importantly they simply can't RUN THE BASES well enough to scratch out runs.

 

The organization is addressing that though...........follow the link to the nightly stats in the OP and keep an eye on the stolen base totals daily.

 

They are greatly emphasizing base running and being extremely aggressive on the paths in the minors.

 

Very common to see players with multiple steals in games........something that is RARE in the majors.

 

And they are taking guys who rarely stole as amateurs and putting up big stolen base numbers.

Cole needs to learn that he can't just groove one anymore just because he throws 99.   Batters are used to seeing that......he needs to be a better pitcher......he was lucky to get away with just 3 runs they hit him very hard for the first 2+ innings.

 

The Gleyber Tortoise bobble/fail on the routine DP changed the tenor of the game.   He's Gary Sanchez at 2nd base........a gifted batter but too dumb to correct the problems that make him just a league average hitter, a lousy fielder and a liability on the bases.   

 

They have chosen to become a pitching and defense team.......and yet the failure to handle routine plays has cost them repeatedly already.

 

Cashman clings to players with losing qualities for too long.    Good middle infielders aren't that hard to find that they should be running out IGB(infield ground ball) and Tortoise.    They don't hit enough or run well enough to be worth the 19 errors they each committed last year.

Very true. I know its early but just like last year they can't get the big hit with runners in scoring position. The bottom of the lineup....WOOF!

Aaron Boone should not have been brought back and this season, while young, shows again why:

 

1 - Terrible lineup management 

—-DJ should never be out of the lineup unless he needs rest or is injured 

—Donaldson is all over the lineup.  Pick a spots and stick with it.  Keep him at 6-7 until he learns how to hit 

 

2 - No fear of underperformance.  This could easily be on Cashman too, but half these guys aren’t even close to performing at their expected level.  I blame Boone for not getting the most out of them

Injurino didn't find his command until 75 pitches........Boone stupidly pulled him out at 85 pitches.........nearly blew the game..........but small balled their way to a passable 5 runs and a W.

Yanks shut out twice on back to back "getaway days" in the same week to lowly Baltimore and Detroit.........they might as well just call it a forfeit and leave day........for load management, of course.

Judge 2 HR's.

 

Takeaway.........pitching is getting ridiculous in MLB.

 

Michael King comes out of pen and strikes out 8 in 3 innings.......last 7 straight.

 

Of all the changes that baseball could make the one I'd like the most would be going to a smaller,  round strike zone.

 

Ball is round.......bat is round.......but strike zone is a square or rectangle and anything that touches the outside edge,  no matter how negligibly.......is a strike..........so the zone is actually much bigger than that box.

 

And the very corners are extremely difficult pitches to hit AT ALL let alone at 98 and moving like a wiffle ball.

 

As a result of the big strike zone full of unhittable areas........pitchers are able to throw tons of absurd breaking pitches that wouldn't be worthwhile if they had to have better command.

 

Make the zone round and subsequently smaller...........see more balls in play.

 

THEN if there are too many HR's worry about moving the fence back or raising the walls.

The fan aspect is just an eyeroll.   Where was Sam Wyche to point out that throwing things on the field is a Cleveland fan thing. 

 

The story there is players gotta' keep their ***** together.

 

Rookie mistake from a young outfielder literally climbing the wall to get at a supposed "heckler"........which of course is a relative term in "outrage" culture.

 

Fans will always be fans and the alcohol they consume impairs their judgement but in the big picture puts big money in the players pockets..........so they need to understand that you don't ever go after the fans........and if you do........there will be repercussions for initiating a riot and you will get fined.

Big game for LeMahieu......3-3.........though one was aided by a bonehead play by Mercado.

 

Pitching continues to be the story.   Cole looked good.  Almost another shutout.

 

Their fan-fighting antics yesterday seemed to have an impact on Cleveland........Mercado and Straw were a mess today.

I agree with you 100% but unfortunately its the sign of the times. While their are a lot of positives and benefits from social media their has also been a lot of negatives with it as well. These athletes have to watch what they do even if it isn't their fault. I bet that schmuck who took a beatdown from Tyson has probably already contacted a lawyer and will now sue for big bucks.

I know this much........if this situation occurred in 1983 the player ain't going anywhere near the drunken fans in the stands.   He'd have had a glass beer bottle smashed across his teeth by an inebriated fan in a heartbeat and the cops wouldn't know who to blame.  I mean sh*t......fans used to throw D batteries at opposing players in Shea Stadium.   Fans know that the cell phones are on now too.   That actually minimized the damage.

 

Some players just don't know where their bread is buttered.    You ignore opposing fans.   You simply can't win an encounter with opposing fans so don't even bother.

Wasn't their an incident back in the 70's or 80's when Mike Milbury was playing for the Bruins. He climbed over the glass at MSG and beat a Rangers fan over his head with the fan's own shoe.

Just because the fans pay money to see them, doesn't give the fans the right to berate and push athletes to the brink of wanting to fight.
