https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/new-york-jets/shaq-lawson-18967/ this reads as if he would only cost 1 million next year. If that’s right we should definitely claim him.

No.  How that is presented is a little deceivingly.  It is purely guaranteed salary the Jest owe him and are eating.  If a team had claimed him off waivers, they’d have been on the hook for about $9.2M next season.  Now he is a FA.

It wouldn’t be the first time that camp ‘jumped the gun’ to be first (Tyson Calabo), but I do too have some respect for those guys. There is enough smoke for the “both parties are talking” fire to likely be true.

TRS just went with a click bate title, unfortunately.

Could just be that the Bills had a convo with Shaq’s agent about signing him if we need him due to injury in the playoffs.  Or they’re keeping the door open for next season (though I think that is less likely).

Totally agree, Beane checks out every FA but I do believe there is legitimate interest on both sides. Shaq is only 27, if he can bring that great run defender who is also solid pass rusher to pair up with Groot, that would be sweet.

Yup.  Always depends on the price.  Not a bad idea to tell him to check out the market and keep us in mind.  Maybe if the offers he sees are modest we can match and he can play here, in a place he likes with teammates he likes.

Obviously they are planning for a better scenario.

My point is that if this team is one and done (which I still think is a stronger possibility that some fans want to admit) than yes it's pointless to bring Lawson back to buffalo and not sure he would realistically be ready to play on Saturday after spending a few days with the team.

I don't understand.

If they aren't planning to be "one and done", why wouldn't they make roster moves that benefit a deeper playoff run?

The only alternative is not signing him because they are planning to be eliminated which doesn't make sense.

What does make sense is that you consistently argue that the Bills won't live up to expectations. I'm sure you'll be right eventually if you keep saying it enough. Then you'll get your "told you so, I knew all along" moment that you so crave.

i barely remember Shaq playing here,  which makes me think,  he didnt do much.   then he went to Miami and disappeared.    why are some excited about this?

just curious.   has he gotten better?

Well...

He had 6.5 sacks and 17 TFL his last season in Buffalo, which would have led the Bills this season.

He was a plus run defender.

He fit in well in the locker room and brought some humor and light-heartedness and swag.

He already knows our system and would be valuable depth for the playoffs and, if things go well, perhaps for the future.

Hughes and Addison might be gone after this year, and having some veteran depth behind our trio of youngster edge rushers might be good.

He's still just 27 years old.

We would no longer be counting on him to play big starter minutes or to live up to a first round billing. We'd simply be bringing in a guy who can play the run well, rush the passer well in spurts, fits well into the locker room, and knows the system. At this point in the season, that's a good get.

How many sacks did Addison finish with? I thought 7 but maybe it was 6? He looked better as the season went on. Hughes had a pretty quiet year this year
