Tom Brady is living in the real world and knows the difficulty in getting football players to understand who even a handful of guys are on the field, over and over, from teams you play all the time. See the difference? He probably has nightmares about trying to tell some idiot who the Mike is on a given play, and now that job just got a little bit harder. Your statement gave me pause to remember a great Charlton Heston movie line, delivered in a commanding voice: "As ye sow, so shall ye reap!". * I think he says that to General Urko. 🤔

BurpleBull
Seems like unnecessary tinkering, but I'm not picking up on how the change could have long-lasting, damaging effects on the game. If a blocker misses an assignment because he thought OLB #10 was part of the other team's offense, chances are that player was released from the concussion protocol too soon.
K-9
Not buying it, Tommy. You don’t identify middle linebackers, etc., by their number; you identify them by where they are positioned on the field. But you know that. 3 hours ago, Nextmanup said: You are assuming every NFL player will know the entire lineup of the opposition, week to week. Everybody knows this.
Mr. WEO
Teams are in charge of what numbers they will assign players. They can just choose to ignore this rule and tell players they are keeping their traditional numbers.

But for kicks and giggles (see what I did there?), let's say Antonio Brown wants to wear #3, can you see the locker room drama between Tom and AB?

Yes...and it's at the top of his head. Whether or not anybody thinks the rule change is bad is irrelevant. Brady will not elicit much empathy from anybody. He's an infamous whiner and has been involved in numerous cheating scandals during his career and is used to getting his way. I know it is hard for him to fathom but the league will survive without him or his opinions once he's gone. He's entering his 22nd year in the league and, if he can't handle this rule change or is afraid that his teammates can't, maybe it's time for him to finally hang them up. He's walking around with the 'GOAT' moniker...deal and STFU, Brady.

nucci
This will be difficult. Teams will have to cover Dion Dawkins because now he will look like a WR. Brady will have trouble with this since he also can't remember what down it is Edited April 23, 2021 by nucci
Ridgewaycynic2013
Shouldn't Brady just tell his O line "hold everybody coming my way!" like he did in New England? 🤔
DCOrange
He has a point, and if it wasn't coming from Brady, nobody would really care about this non-story. He's probably exaggerating how significant the change will be, but it likely will make it at least a little tougher on the OLines, and it's not like there's anything really to be gained from the rule change outside of some more revenue for the league as players change their numbers. This was likely a "break glass in case of emergency" rule for the NFL if they ever lost revenue like they did this past season.
