The Milano hate runs deep at TBD...  With the possible exception of Lorax, Cookie was EASILY the best LB on the Bills in the time he was here.  I just don't get the "Bye Felicia" attitude around here.  Here's to you Cookie, hope you get every $ you can.

I think you are mixing two separate issues. Everyone thinks Milano is a good LB, some will say great, others won’t. The area most fans, and it appears Beane, have an issue with is compensation. Paying a LB that has health issues top dollar doesn’t seem a wise way to spend your allocated amount of money. I think if Matt had played the entire year injury free and at a high level, Beane would of made a FMV offer. Neither of those things happened and thus Matt wants and gets to test FA.

I disagree he has health issues.  He played 13 games in 2018, 15 in 2019, and 10 in 2020.  Yes, he was injured this year, but he was our best LB when on the field.

On one of the Buffalo Fanatics podcasts last night one of the hosts mentioned he got into a Twitter thing with Darron Lee and Lee sent him a DM saying he has a contract offer in hand from the Bills. They surmised that he may wait to see if Milano re-signs and if not would take that deal and feel ready to compete for that spot in TC. They said that if the Bills did extend an offer to Lee, they probably did for Stills as well. Meaning Stills could weigh against any other offers and also wait to see what happens with John Brown.

I don’t remember where exactly in the podcast it is. I think it was toward the end.

Ok. Let’s look at that statement. First, I don’t think any of the LB’ers played exceptional this year. Edmunds maybe played as well as he did last year, we can debate why that happened, but better to stay on Milano’s play. Matt didn’t play great the first half of the year, then he got so hurt he couldn’t play. Klein stepped in and eventually had a good couple game stretch. This actually gave me more optimism at the time incase Matt wouldn’t be back. Secondly, Matt might be the best LB on the Bills, for me that doesn’t mean we pay him like he is one of the best LB’ers in the league. Availability is the most important ability.

At some point?  You mean like how we resigned Tre, dawkins and Poyer?  Can’t resign everyone.  The injury prone players should be the ones we let go.

I love Milano, but he’s not worth 13+ mill a year to this team imo, considering his injury history

No he's not worth 13-14/yr. Beane knows this and in a way Matt probably does too. I wouldn't pay him more than 10/yr. That's what he's worth based on his injury history and production. I wish him the best.

I think a lot of you are underestimating how hard it is to find linebackers who are good enough to be on the field on all 3 downs, and be a strength in all phases of coverage, run support and pass rush.

I don't think the Bills should pay Milano, because I'd rather have Edmunds and think it's a waste of cap space to have two highly paid field generals, but that doesn't mean Milano isn't deserving of it. He's very good. And his skill set isn't all that common

I think you’re misinterpreting others for being realistic as opposed to “hating” him.

I love Milano. That being said, we can’t keep everyone and an injury plagued LB projected to make 13+ mill a year is realistically someone we will have to let go.

I’m sure the majority of us like Milano and hope we can find a way to keep him...without wrecking our cap situation.

Darron Lee is perhaps the Bills' insurance against Milano leaving, is McDermott is married to his system. He's basically the poorer version of Milano, though perhaps with more athletic upside, as Lee has tested better than Milano

Take it for what it is, hearsay, but my close friend is friends with one of the guys on the S&C staff and the entire team views him as damaged goods and none of them expect him back because “everyone” include the FO.  They view him as fragile and think that his injuries will only get worse with age.

I went through the top-10 salary LB listed on Overthecap as 4-3 OLB.  (This is problematic because some of the guys on this list appear to play MLB)

Looking just at games played (which of course is not a complete metric as some guys may have played limited or on a snap count)

3/10 played >=61 games, or 95% of available games

7/10 played >59/64 games, or 92% of available games

Milano has played 54/64 games, or 84%.

The two players who played that # or fewer are Deion Jones (54/64) and Kwon Alexander (46/64).  Alexander was a disappointment to the signing team and traded.  Deion Jones has been an impact player on a bad team and has played 16/16 snaps the last 2 years (he appears to be playing MLB now?)

Shaq Thompson played 56/64 games at the point he signed.

Of course, what this "drive by" doesn't show us, is how often these guys were on injury report and "questionable" but played anyway at lower effectiveness, or played fewer than their usual # of snaps - and how often they were in the training room receiving treatment that wasn't considered to rise to the level of reportable, but that may have involved the same muscle groups or be related to a previous injury.

Milano has had repeated hamstring injuries (2017, 2019, 2020).

"Cookie"???

I don't know why some actual "hate" would surprise you - I mean, we've got folks diagnosing Allen as "bipolar" or having "playoff yips" despite 64.2% completions, 272 ypg, 5 TD, 1 INT, 94.3% passer rating plus 48.3 YPG 1 TD, 5.8 ypa rushing (those are all stats we said we'd be delighted with last year).  Anyway.

But all too often people refer to any criticism as "hate", and that may be what you're doing here.

The paradox of Matt Milano is that he's a player who is so good and has such a unique skill set that he's not easily replaced.  He's a small-ish LB who can cover almost like a safety and has shown the ability to impact the game (defense passes, INT, QB hits, sacks) but who can also sack a QB by shoving an OLman back into him.

But he's also building quite the injury history.

And that makes him a paradox, because it may mean you can't replace him with "next man up", you have to reshuffle your defensive deck whenever he goes out.  If you're paying him top dollar, that gets harder and harder to do.

You and your logic....pffft….I mean, what's next? Reasoned discourse with cogent arguments??!!! I mean....c'mon man.

A 4.4 (40) definitely tests better than Milano. He'll probably play more like a safety then a LB and that's fine. Hopefully his tackling ability proves better than Milano.

Move Tre outside and get a real MLB. McBeane can be stubborn, so I don't see it happening, but that's the best path IMO.

Define "real MLB". Because it seems like folks only think of the classic, thumper MLB but that isnt what McD wants. Look at Kuechly.
