Bills DB coach John Butler reportedly in consideration for position with Browns

Is his contract up? Not sure what he would do that would be considered a promotion if Phillips is the DC

Hoping the Bills deny it (assuming he’s still under contract). It would be considered a lateral move, I believe even if he’s being named DC (though I’m sure the Bills wouldn’t prohibit him from taking a play calling job). And I’m pretty sure Pegula pays more to his position coaches than the browns owners do (Bills are supposedly among the highest paying teams).

Not much reason to let him leave if he’s still under contract. He’s a very good DB coach.

I don't really get why he’d want to leave for Cleveland, where the coaching staffs get about 2 years on average (if they’re lucky...).

They can't stop him from interviewing if the positions title includes  Assistant HC or  Assistant DC in addition to being the DB coach.

They can. Only HC is considered a promotion. All other positions are considered lateral by NFL.

they likely wouldn’t choose to block it though if it was an actual DC position - but it wouldn’t be if Wade is going there

DC isn’t a promotion either. It’s head coach or everyone else. Only two levels at play.

Cleveland needs to take a seat.  It was cute with the whole Daboll flirtation, but then they tie in the GM, and now this.... Hop off,  Browns.

Because the guy running their franchise now wanted McDermott and company back before we hired him. He's got lists of people he wants, many came to the Bills with McDermott.

I know - but the Bills may be open to letting him interview for the DC since it is technically a promotion from DB coach, even if they aren’t required to let him per nfl parameters on promotions

Butler didn’t actually come to the Bills with McDermott. He came over from Houston in 2018 after he was fired. They hadn’t worked together previously. He and McDermott went to HS together

Butler is a McDermott guy. I'm pretty sure he was a top candidate to be McDermott's DC.

Just now, Coach Tuesday said:

McD isn’t the type to block these types of things.

Unless it’s from DB coach to DB coach. That would be a weird move and I hope they would block it.

Bills can refuse an interview request and can refuse to let him go as it's not a head coaching position.

I wonder if Butler and Wade end up in Cleveland does former Browns DC Wilks slide over to Buffalo to join McDermott again as DB coach.

He’s a McDermott guy in that they went to HS together. Butler has never coached with him prior to the Bills (he never coached with Wade Phillips either, so not sure where Fox is getting that they are very close, not disputing it but just wondering where it comes from)

This! McDermott hand picked the guy to be his DB coach. This is the guy he wanted when he first got the job here but couldn't get him. But just in case I'm keeping Kris Richard on speed dial.

all coaches are assistants and considered lateral moves EXCEPT the HC position. So everyone on Staff can be blocked from interviews for other staff.

they cannot be blocked for HC.

same in FO only position that cannot be blocked is GM.

that is the issue when trying to put your staff together late. Time to look at those that are unemployed Browns. Every team should block your requests at this point.

Wilks (Browns old DC) was also The DB coach in Carolina when McD was there

There is still a possibility that the Browns keep Wilks. There is some buzz that he could stay. Wilks was Stefanski’s choice as DC when he interviewed last year and they are trying not to change too much. They are keeping the ST coordinator who Stefanski worked with in Minnesota.
