2018 MLB Playoffs

Just wanted to say it was really, really enjoyable watching the Yankees' failed comeback last night.  They kept showing kids and various fans in the crowd getting all excited as the Yankees made the bottom of the 9th interesting.

And then the game ended and the Yankees' season ended too.

So enjoyable.  The looks of pain on the faces of all the animals in the Bronx Zoo.

Just great fun and dare I say, even a little heart warming.

I think my favorite part was when A-Rod 2.0 struck out.

And not a second more will be spent on the playoffs

Baseball has to find a way so that people will watch even if their team or the Yankees aren’t playing, cause they lose 90 percent of the potential audience with this format if those two are out.

And they know it

I would think that baseball is regional no matter who is involved.

I think that the 2000 WS was the worst rated of all time, even with two NY teams involved.

So the Yankee theory doesn't hold much water. But I don't know for sure.

The 2000 WS was also incredibly lopsided.  It wasn't a good series at all.

I think the 2000 WS was the third straight Yankees romp in the WS. So, I don't know how the previous two WS TV ratings were affected.

I look forward to watching the Astros spank the Red Sox.  I will tune in for all of those games.

Yes, I believe the Yankees entered the 2000 WS with eight consecutive WS wins.  Mets broke the streak .... and poked the bear in doing so.

Might have been if Timo Perez hadn't been jogging from first base on Zeile's hit.  But hey, why would a rookie go all out in the World Series?

A's fan here. Pretty much playing on house money at this point. Nobody expected us to be here. 97 wins later, we're in and hoping to wreak havoc.

I'm an Astros fan. You guys had a hell of a year. If someone told me in April that you were the team I'd have to keep a close eye on, I would have laughed.

It was a fun season. I figured they'd be a .500 team this season, moving toward the 2019 season where they'd contend. Solid base, but the future pitching (or lack  there of) scares me a bit. We'll see. Id' like to say good luck, but the Astros are no longer that fun lovable team. If they keep the team intact.  they might be a roadblock in the AL West for years to come.

A lot of game to go so no guarantees but they just mentioned this on the broadcast. The Brew Crew is inching closer to a 12 game win streak and a free burger promotion that dates back to the 1940's:

Front Row Amy is quite the MILF/Cougar!

Counsell cooked Hader yesterday for 3 innings and wasn’t available tonight and Justin Turner sure made him pay for that today. LAD got the split they needed but Brewers coulda had a commanding 2-0 lead in this series.

And it sounds like his starter was on cruise control and then he yanks him after 5 2/3?   I can't stand the idiocy that rules managing decisions in the modern era.

If I don't get to watch Front Row Amy in the WS, I hold Counsell responsible!

You and I should storm Miller Park with torches and pitchforks if that happens!

Yeah he got away with some of those similar moves vs an inferior Rox team in the NLDS. I still think the Brewers can win this series because of their pen and they won the Kershaw game. Might take 7 but I think they can.

Astros showed last night they are the team to beat in the AL despite Boston’s 108 regular season wins. If it’s LA/Houston in the WS again, is that the first WS rematch since the Dodgers/Yanks from the late 70s?

Brewers pen sucked yesterday.  They should have just started every batter with a 3-1 count to save time.

I know, right? And that’s their strength too. Like I said originally,  was no need for Hader to pitch 3 the other night and it had a domino effect last night. Dodgers defense has been brutal all year...I still see that playing a part as we move along in this series and biting them in the butt.

It's the 7th inning of game 4 and the Astro fans all look like the series is over.  We get rowdier crowds at my kids' soccer games.

That's b/c Red Sox pitching and hitting destroyed their will to cheer!

Next stop, World Series!

Sox not only beat the 'Stros in 5, but won 3 straight in Houston with not a lot from Sale and their closer a complete mess in this series. Alex Cora pushed every right button. I remember during ST that national, Boston and even NY beat writers being impressed with what he brought to the table. A stalked roster sure helps too lol.

Finally got to watch a Brewers game at home.  For some reason I had trouble tracking balls and strikes.

Bring on game 7.   Go Brew Crew!

Craig Counsell managed one hell of a game.  Brilliant.

I don't know enough about the Brewers pitching staff to have a strong opinion, but one night later Counsell burned through his starter and best reliever with 4 innings left and down one run.

Last night he had the stones to let a reliever hit with the bases loaded n the 5th, up 3. Today he went to a PH bottom 2nd 2 outs two men on, down 1.

I think tonights move will come back to haunt him.

Who is she?!

EDIT:  Just went back and see you guys have already discussed her.  "Front Row Amy".

What does that mean?  She's the hot chick who is known for sitting in the front row at Brewers' games?

I see I'm not the first one to spot her.

LOL!

WOW!  I too feel she's keeping score.

Apparently she's there every game.

Google... Front row Amy.

Just read this article about her.  Yep, she likes to keep score; you could tell she was.

That's hilarious about her Facebook following and what not.

Looks like this is the last we'll see of Amy for a while.  :(

I noticed that out of about 10 pitchers in this game I think every one has thrown 95+.   Amazing how much the game has changed.

When Mattingly coached the Dodgers, I used to say he would go through his bullpen trying to find that guy who was having an off day.  He seemed to be successful at that.  I realize that all the stats managers do that now but that is the risk.  When you use 6 pitchers in a game, you are lucky if you can get through that without one of them being off.  And in the playoffs, just not being able to throw strikes to the first guy you face qualifies as off.

If Counsell's early use of Hader would have gotten them a win, he would be considered a genius but it didn't work out.   Such is the defining line for genius's.

I have been thinking about pitching speed as well lately.

It used to be that like 92 was pretty good and there were a few freaks around the league who get it up into the high 90s.  But no more than 2 or 3 of those guys in the whole league during any little era of play.

Now it's like every team has multiple guys who can hit high 90s.

On a related note, there has to be a speed threshold where a human being simply can no longer hit the ball.

I wonder how high that truly is; would make an interesting experiment with a pitching machine.  Keep edging it up until the best hitters go 0 for 50 swings.

I also wonder if humans beings (pitchers) will be able to ever hit that speed threshold!  Probably not, but there are a lot of good MLB hitters who have real trouble hitting high 90s/100 mph balls for sure.

If it ever got up to like 105/110?  Might ruin the game.

Go to the baseball area, its under "sportstalk\MLB" on this site and look up my thread on the fastball.   I thought it was really interesting.

BTW, Hershiser is the Dodger color guy and he frequently says he only threw in the low 90's.

Love this point. The World Series game 7 mentality has crept into every playoff game to the point that they manage scared too often for my taste.

Taken to an extreme if a starter opens the game with two off the plate the analytics will say the batter will get on so why not bring in a reliever to stop the bleeding?

With that said, Counsell's pre-game plan to start the lefty on short rest and pull him after one batter was great. Didn't translate to a win, but what a smart move.
