He keeps his velocity late in the game and gets better as games go along. His issue is that he starts off slowly when he’s bad: That game was over before the Yanks came to bat because good Severino was there. 66% of his starts went until AT LEAST 2 outs in the 6th. That’s a ton in today’s game. I disagree. If Severino was not on one of the top scoring teams in the league, his ability to last 6 innings would not even come close to 66% of his games started. Even when he is on his game, I feel like he begins to lose his stuff around the 4th or 5th inning. His power and the location on his fastball/slider seems to rapidly decline around that stage in the game. I’m happy to have him as a starter on the Yankees presently, but I see his future (ideally) as a reliever.

He may never be the number 1 but he may never be lower than a 2. His ERA this year was 3.39 and he struck out 220 guys. His ability TO pitch so many innings is why he’s forever a starter. He has 63 starts over the last 2 years which is right near the top of the league. He was 21st in innings pitched this year and 17th in innings pitched last year. He’s a horse. He’s actually #3 right now behind Happ and Tanaka, but we’ll just ignore what’s happening currently. He was supposed to be our ace this year and for years to come. He just hasn’t been consistent enough. I give him 2 seasons before he is relegated to the bullpen.

The Yanks certainly don’t view him that way. That’s why they handed him the ball in a win or go home scenario. FWIW, I thought that they should have started Happ and my dad and brother wanted Tanaka. Good Severino though is a better than both.

The reason they started Seve in the wildcard is so they could pitch Happ in games 1 and 5 of the Boston series. I’d take “good Severino” over Tanaka, but the order is clearly Happ, Tanaka, Severino. We aren’t going to agree here. Severino is the most dominant starter that the Yanks have. He has days where he is bad and you know it immediately. He’s the one guy (starter that is) on the Yanks that can shut down an elite offense. Tanaka can be dominant also but can be bad. He’s way better at home. Happ is just a really solid starter that you can feel comfortable with in any situation. Severino though is your best chance at winning a 1-0 type of game vs. someone like Verlander.

There was a lot of talk going into the A's game that said they were very nervous that he would come out overhyped - like last year, and I think they figured it was better to deal with it at home (even in an elimination game) than put him in Fenway in game 1. And I agree with you that Severino is a better pitcher and a horse, he's just still a young pitcher. His stuff is exceptional.

And they know it No playoff format will change things if you dont watch games your favorite team isnt in just like pretty much every sport. There are people who love the game and will watch other games or just the playoffs, but the majority arent going to sit down every night to watch games their team isnt in. Even in football playoffs, most people will watch the Super Bowl no matter who's playing, by an AFC wildcard game? Much less. Until baseball is able to balance the league so it's not always the same teams dominating the league and collecting the top players, they wont attract casual fans to watch regularly. Sure you get the occasional small market club getting to the wild card game or divisional series like the Rockies or As, but usually they arent making it that far. The only thing that could have made the playoffs better would have been the Red Sox and Yankees both being swallowed up into a giant sink hole and neither team moving forward or existing anymore.
