Accountability

This isn’t intended to be a pitchfork thread as there are already 59 of them. One thing that really, really bothered me yesterday when McDermott talked about the need to look at the tape after the game before commenting on certain things. It was clear to literally everyone that Peterman was a disaster. Phillip Gaines should change his number to ?. McDermott wasn’t being transparent at all. He might have thought that he was helping his team but he was insulting the fan base. He would have earned a lot more respect by holding himself accountable like he preaches. He talks an awful lot about accountability and then doesn’t practice it. I know I would have had a lot more respect for him if he told it like it was instead of sticking his head in the sand.

I think he likes to insulate his players from public criticism while giving it to them straight behind closed doors.

The coach works with players every day. He doesn’t know you or work with you. You have no idea what kind of a tongue lashing the team will get this morning. Throwing them under the bus from a microphone after being embarrassed like that in the pouring rain for three hours will serve zero purpose except to make YOU feel better....I guess.

That vacuous stare and lack of eye contact are no act.  He's a bit lost.

He's a stuffed shirt.

Yeah, after they towel off and get comfy and after they all have some orange slices and he passes out the participation medals, he will  no doubt unleash that legendary McD fury on them...

Maybe so but managing the public is a big part of a head coaches’ job. He isn’t doing anyone favors by getting the media, and in turn the fans, worked up. When that happens, he, and his team lose the benefit of the doubt.

“I have to look at the tape” = “it’s hard to win in the nfl”

Same thing Jauron used to spout after a loss.  He never said anything other than "look at the tape".

Always with the excuses, guys come in here with the same formulas we've seen 1000 times before.   And they wonder why we lose faith so fast.    I'm ok with us being beat by Baltimore, they were a better team all around.   And I didn't think we were a contender this year.  But the way we lost this game, the complete and utter humiliation of that blowout is unacceptable.

Losing 20-13 ok I get it.   40-3=we have no idea what we're doing.

Fair points, but he also tends to keep things pretty tempered when it comes to praise.

What’s the point of all of this? It’s not like he can change the roster now! He’s got 15 more games to go with these stuffs. Throwing them under the bus in early September serves no purpose whatsoever, other than to make guys on a message board feel better for a few minutes.

One thing we do know is if he holds true to what he said in the Embedded series that if you don't play hard you will be replaced then it looks as though there will be a lot of different players on the field this week !!

There should honestly be no need for him to look at the tape to determine who to start next week. And  based on how things have gone offensively, I'm pretty sure he wouldn't get anything out of looking at the tape of the offensive side of the ball. More than likely he needs to talk to Daboll and see what he thinks. He's a wet blanket when it comes to the offensive side of the ball, which is annoying. They had one shot during the game, think it was the 2nd offensive possession, where McD was on the tablet looking at what I assume was the last defensive series, hardly paying attention to what the offense was doing. That's a problem.

Just to be clear I’m not asking him to crush anyone publicly. Those guys mentioned were just examples. At the same time when you get buried like that you don’t need to look at the tape to figure out what happened. He could have went the route of, “we struggled in the passing game. The line committed too many penalties, there were drops and some throws that we’d like back. It wasn’t a good day.”

It’s insulting to say he has to look at the tape after his team lost 47-3.

I don't know. What I saw was a complete team failure, not one player. The O-line was a total disaster. When either NP or Allen got the ball to a receiver, they dropped it. Even the TV guys pulled out the tele-strator showing how not one receiver got open on pass plays. Maybe McDermott should have been more angry with his players, but maybe he should be mad at himself and Beane?

Exactly, you can't just jettison all the good players in the name of process and think this self created reclamation project will only take 1 year to fix. Their moves have set the franchise back 5+ years and within that time frame guys get hurt become FA, stuff happens so that 5 years may turn into 7 or 8 years.

I do not understand McBeans direction at all right now, maybe it will become more clear but right now it looks like a rudderless ship and McDermott seems to becoming less and less transparent as Kirby says. IDK but this whole "process" seems to be an unmitigated mess right now and that is unacceptable.
