Buffalo Bills: Predicting the 53-man roster after two preseason games

The Buffalo Bills are creeping closer and closer to the regular season, so that means it’s time for the annual 53-man roster prediction.

After the Buffalo Bills second preseason game, we have started to see the strengths and weaknesses of players on the roster.

Even though there are two more preseason games left, I have created my roster prediction and am ready to share.

Croom and Wesley released?  I think that would be a mistake.

His list has only 51 players.  So, I would add an O-lineman that can play multiple positions, and keep Logan Thomas as a 4th TE.

Who is fielding kicks and punts on these 53 projections? Would think Ray Ray makes it for that reason alone.

I think Murphy is looking like a main return guy and Kerley does that as well. I believe Gaines is a gunner and Andre Holmes, Lorax, Stanford, Vallejo, Humber, Lacey, Bush, Marlowe would be most of your core special teams guys. I think McCloud has a shot, but Murphy has passed him on the return depth chart imo.

I still don't understand why people think we need 4 TEs

I don't think this is unreasonable. This regime kept four tight ends last year and Daboll has kept multiple tight ends as an OC and in his NE days. I don't see any reason that they would not do it again.

That Fede guy was one of the few D-Lineman getting up the field last night.  Not sure what the numbers are gonna be on the DL, but out of the non-lock guys up front, he was the most noticeable.  We need Murphy healthy ASAP and/or get Mack here somehow.  Run defense seemed to be everyone’s main worry from last night but we will get torched by good QB’s if we give them 4 or 5 seconds to throw on majority of drop backs.

Fede showed up against guys who'll be on the street in September, but earier in the game he was getting caught inside against the run.

Not only does he have just 51 players, but it includes McCarron.  At best I see McCarron being put on IR possibly for return later in the season, but more likely IR with an injury settlement.  And to get the roster to 53, I'd add another TE (Clay and O'Leary are locks with 2 from among Lee, Croom or Thomas), another OL (Wesley), and another DL with Murphy and now Kyle ailing.

and made to look foolish on a couple play action fakes, chasing the wrong guy while the ball carrier ran right past him!

Likely 51 were listed because he was expecting cuts from other teams making team.

Can they just cut him, or is that not allowed since he's hurt?  Can't see wasting  an "IR possible to return slot on him."

If he is cut when injured they have to give him an injury settlement and would not be able to resign him this year/

Releasing him has cap implications since he has guaranteed money in his contract.

They couldn't activate him from IR this season unless he begins the season on the 53.

Yes understand there's a cap hit, but thought I read his guaranteed money this season was $900k and next year $1000M relatively small numbers by today's standards.  Didn't think he got a huge signing bonus so didn't think overall the cap hit  would be too bad.

My question though just in general, can you outright cut an injured player and not cost any money other than the cap hit?  Is that allowed?

OK just saw Limeaids reply, so they can cut him but would be an injury settlement and believe then the rules are the Bills are the one team that can NOT resign him this season.

Wasn't there a QB a few seasons back the Bills cut in pre-season, not injured then resigned after week 1, that way didn't have to guarantee full years salary?

A.J. McCarron

A.J. McCarron signed a 2 year, $10,000,000 contract with the Buffalo Bills, including a $4,000,000 signing bonus, $7,900,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $5,000,000. In 2018, McCarron will earn a base salary of $900,000, a signing bonus of $4,000,000 and a workout bonus of $100,000, while carrying a cap hit of $3,000,000 and a dead cap value of $5,000,000.
