So the Bills sign a older vontae Davis for 10 mil but can’t give Gaines 5 or 6?

I like Beane but I’m not sure I understand this indirect trade off

Spotrac says $5 mil for Davis.

Just seeing the pay this morning is brutal news considering my post yesterday.  Woods' release later this summer would have covered 3/4th of it.

damn shame...damn shame, because it would have been a boon to our D and insulated us if any of the three CB went down.

Can you imagine having Gaines, White and Davis for less than what New England pays Gilmore.

I don't get these reactions. I'm sure Beane most definitely offered him a contract with playing time incentives that could have exceeded 4 million at the very least.

What probably happened was we signed Davis because Gaines over--valued himself; once we got Vontae, that shut the door on him returning, even if we did offer a contract with at least 4 million. EJ's market was dead silent, so he got a lot less than he wanted, especially likely from what he and his agent were asking from the Bills before negotiations with other teams.

Considering it seemed like the Bills moved-on from Gaines even before the FA period opened (by signing Davis), they probably offered Gaines a deal that he and his agent thought was insulting and they told the Bills to F themselves, either directly or indirectly.  Then when he hit the market and found offers that were substantially worse, he took the best one he could get, and that was the Browns.

The guys running the team have never valued the RB position like that.  Barkley's pass catching ability increases his value, but it's also likely they are fine with Hyde / Duke Johnson at RB.  Guard is likely the strongest position on their team with Zeitler / Bitonio, so that rules out Nelson.  They could be in play for Chubb but might never see him.  I think they are a real candidate to trade down.

I think they stay at #4 and get either Chubb or Barkely. One of the two is guaranteed to be there. Browns had a lot of draft selections last year and again have a lot this year. I don't see the value in them gaining more picks. They need quality over quantity in this draft.

One thing I was thinking is that if they draft a QB (Darnold), they would be wise to use a 1st rounder on a LT.  Fourth overall is too high for McGlinchey so they may be willing to move back.

I think he just wants to play and the Bills were offering him the slot role. He’s the #1 corner in Cleveland.

The browns are stacked. They are going to very good next year.

They still have one of the worst secondaries in the league. It might be even worse this year than last year unless they get a starting CB in the draft. Should have kept McCourty.

It was 5 mil? Oh I could have sworn I thought it was 10 for some reason

I think he can make up  to 8 with incentives but it’s 5 mill base, 3.5 gtd

edit: looked it up and it’s lower

Slot CB is pretty much a starting position these days. Maybe less chance of getting injured as well.

That’s true, but outside corners make more money. It’s about the next contract. He’s a young guy on a 1 year deal. If he plays well on the outside he will make a lot more on the market next year than if he was the #3 corner in Buffalo

I just don't understand how they could trade down for more picks..they have 4 in the top 35 now, 7 in the top 101, and 12 overall

Maybe they will trade down for future picks to keep the picks flowing.

Gaines has played good for like 8 games in his career, thus the reason for a 1 year 4 million contract. Some of you are really really over valuing EJ Gaines.

The reason for the 1 year prove it deal is his inability to stay in the lineup due to injurty.  He's a good player.

If I were the Browns I wouldn't bother trading down at all. They have plenty of draft picks already and will have a ton of cap space for the next couple years. They don't need picks anymore, they need blue-chip players. Fitzpatrick or Chubb would be the smart move for them.

dead money is still dead money.  there's a reason most people didn't think we would be able to trade Darius last year.

100M is still 100M even with your imagination of alot of dead money next year too

He like a lot of posters here probably read the predictions he'd get a $8 Million + contract and the window for the Bills closed.

He is taking a chance here that he can stay healthy for 1 year and then hope to hit it big in free agency but if you cannot hit it big with the Brown$ I doubt it is possible.

1 good year, actually half a year. I believe he was rated one of the worst cbs in the NFL while with the Rams. 15,11 and 11 games of "good player" play would have equaled a more lucrative contract. Injuries might have played a little factor, but only playing good in a handful games did more so IMO.
