I've always found the opening to "Saving Private Ryan," incredibly powerful.

This is my vote.

I watched a special about the movie several years ago and they interviewed a few people who actually were at Normandy. Some couldn't watch the opening scene because it was so real and it basically brought back bad flashbacks.

The opening to Casino Royale was excellent; great start to the "new" James Bond.

Also the opening to American Beauty.

Ha! I've never heard about that movie, but that was an excellent intro sequence.

And PTA's take on the Touch of Evil opening:

Boogie Nights:

I'm surprised this one took 2 pages to get to, considering it's since become one of the more mimicked openings in modern cinema:

I already linked to it.

Didn't show up as a video, though. Don't know why.

Idiocracy is one of those cult classics. Either you haven't seen it, seen it and didn't get it, or think it's one of the greatest comedies ever.

I'm in the third category

Which version? The Tom Hanks WWII original or Star Wars: Force Awakens reboot?

The opening scene of your avatar is also one of my favorites - and one of my favorite movies:
