Smart move giving Beane final say over the 53 man roster.

Recommended Posts

It seemed odd at first but letting Beane have final say over the 53 man roster gets McDermott off the hook. If there has to be a bad cop who has to make a hard decision then let it be Beane so McDermott doesn't alienate the players. As we all know that there has been a complete change of guards at One Bills Drive and there will be some hard decisions on players in the next year or two and some might involve some fan favorites that won't initially be popular decisions. With all that being said if anyone doesn't think that McDermott isn't firmly entrenched with the final say over the final roster might want to rethink that belief.

What exactly does it mean that Beane has "control of the 53" but McDermott has "final say"? From a practical standpoint, how does that work? Does McDermott say "our D LINEMAN is hurt, get me somebody with more pass rush ability" so Beane looks for candidates and McDermott chooses? How can Beane chooze the 53 for McDermott to coach?

Jesus, way, way too many people obsessed with this hierarchy nonsense.

Decisions are not made in a vacuum. The GM outranks the coach. And at the end of the day, the owner will have the final say.

Who has the final say on the turf grass? Whether we get cheerleaders? The kind of music played at practice? What John Murphy has for lunch? The PSI of our balls? Who washes the jock straps? What does "final say" actually mean? Who has first say? We deserve these answers.

The weird thing is, it keeps getting brought up in multiple threads, disguised as a fresh new idea...

I would vote for a consolidated thread on GM-coach hierarchy questions.

We need more transparency.

Who decides what they are having for breakfast tomorrow?!?

My guess is that Beane will put together the roster, but McDermott will look it over before any roster changes are finalized. Or as others have said, if the Bills need a LB, McDermott tells Beane what he would like in a LB...then Beane goes out and finds 2 or 3, with his recomendation for which one to choose. Most of the time McDermott may go with Beanes choice, but McDermott does have the ability to make the final decision if he doesn't agree. The 'leg work' of gathering the names is up to Beane though.

Folks really need to stop overthinking this aspect of running a team.

we need to assign accountability! so when we grab our pitchforks people dont show up at the wrong house.

We have enough pitchforks and torches to cover EVERY house! Why discriminate?

It's all irrelevant, really. The only 'accountability' there is, is to Ownership, and if things go pear shaped, you will just have to see who's gone, to work out who Ownership thought was responsible.

It's semantics. If Beane isn't given "final say" over the roster then the Panthers could have blocked the interview.

It's clear McD and Beane will work in concert on this, but Beane is "officially" the man in charge.

People read way too much into this stuff.

Brandon is. He is in charge of all non-football decisions.

I have hacked into the list and added Jerry's and Bucky's address to it at top of list.

It's called a collaborative approach. Polian and Levy were together. Same deal.

This is much about nothing. I know we're bored as not NFL season, but this is nothing.

I don't recall Levy picking the players. Polian drafted them and Levy coached them. If you want Polian that is not the setup the Bills just implemented.

The present structure our Bills are using is very similar to exactly what goes on in KC

The only difference is that is currently a highly successful team so media and fans don't claim its in any way dsyfunctional

At the end of the day if we start winning more games nobody will care about the structure

If we keep losing folks will key on it

Yep- both these guys are going to need to agree on and be responsible for the roster. Pegs wants a flat collaborative org... if one guy has to overrule the other on a decision it's a sign that it's not working how it should or how the owner envisions.
