My guess is that the coaches and FO already planned on releasing Carpenter for at least a couple weeks now. And Carpenter can work with whomever he wants on his time. I liked Carpenter. Before Rex was hired, he was the best kicker the Bills had ever had, percentage wise, and was very good from 40-50+ yards out. But it became pretty obvious that he wasn't the same player these last two years. Not sure why. I know he had an ankle issue before the 2015 season started, and Rex didn't exactly do a good job of instilling confidence in the guy, but letting him go was the right move. If both Carp and Christie were open to this, it would have happened. You constantly hear about players working with ex-players, players on other teams, outside trainers, and ex-coaches. Nothing wrong with that, and nothing a GM can do to stop it. And I can understand Doug not wanting an outsider at a closed practice. And if I'm Carp, I might not want help from a player from a era past trying to change the way I do things. It's not like Carp is a rook or anything close to that. Idk what the reasons were, or who stopped it from happening, but I have a hard time believing they wouldn't get together if they wanted to. What is Christie's coaching history, who has he "helped" get out of a slump in the past? There is a chance he could have made things worse. It's nice to have former players who want to the help young guys but i personally believe that the coaching players receive during the offseason conflicts with what the coaches want during the season. It’s possible that Carpenter was rejecting the help through Whaley, but from Christie’s perspective it would seem that Whaley was the one who shot the whole thing down. geez, this article is like a Rorschach test . The Bills had to carry aan extra kicker on the team for kick offs. MAYBE that situation was justified when Carpenter was "GOLD", but that product has tarnished and they can save $$$$$ by finding ONE guy to get the job done. Why on earth would you want to prolong this dog and pony show? There is enough real reasons to find fault with Whaley without feigning outrage at ridiculous things. I'd like to wish the very best to Dan Carpenter and his future endeavors. It's not easy kicking in Buffalo! For the record, I did offer to help him, but was told by the GM that he wouldn't be receptive to outsiders. You would think after kicking there for nine years, l wouldn't be considered an outsider. But rather an experienced resource that was available to coach a fellow specialist in a time of need. Guys, I'm generally supportive of Doug, but stuff like this gives me pause. I think he's done a decent job drafting (when you think without Captain Hindsight with you, he did make choices that were understandable), picking up solid players like O Leary and J. Miller. But some of the stuff like this kind of concerns me. GMs should make efforts to improve their team, and treating your best kicker in team history as an "outsider" is really strange. Bolded pretty much puts the thread in a nutshell... Even if Whaley "blocked" this from happening, I don't really care nor do I think Christie would even have been able to make any type of marked difference.
