Doug Whaley - The Tim Graham Feature Story

Tim Graham wrote an awful lot of garbage to blame Whaley when all he had to say was "he sucks at drafting QBs."

This. Try again next season and don't keep Tyrod around

Great point. Actually, being forced to overpay for McCoy, Hughes and Incognito will be a big reason we let Gilmore walk.

Cool story bro.

Tim Graham has written the two single most accurate articles on the Bills in back to back weeks.

He nailed Whaley's tenure as GM and the dynamic of deflection under the Nix era when Whaley was the director pro personnel coming up with draft boards that has EJ Manuel graded in the 1st round. Egregious.

I wish Keith Ellison was still our best LB

And David Nelson our best receiver. So Tim Graham wants to compare the Bills to 3 teams that have "NFL caliber QBs". 2 of the QBs are probable HOF QBs. The only problem I have with Doug Whaley is the same problem I have with Tyrod Taylor, he seems to be afraid to "pull the trigger". In previous drafts there have been QBs available that the Bills could have acquired (Carr, Bridgewater, Garropolo, Prescott) but Whaley and his scouting department but these grades on them and determine which round they should be selected to miss out on them. Is it the EJ Manuel effect? I don't know, but if there is a QB in this upcoming draft class that they covet Doug Whaley can't be afraid to "let er rip"!!

Graham makes a classic mistake here. He makes the correlation that having a higher percentage of drafted players on your team CAUSES success. In policy study circles, they'd say he is ignoring a latent variable that is driving both high draft pick roster percentage and success.

Teams with franchise QBs have to rely primarily on draft picks because the QB eats up so much cap room. Teams without a franchise QB salary, can afford to have a higher percentage of pro personal on their rosters.Having a top QB is the reason teams have long term success. It drives roster decisions as well.

I read an article that said successful school children tended to have more books in their home than other children. Do you suppose the books really had anything to do with it? No, these children had smart/educated parents (who tend to read more) and that's what causes their success. Just filling a room in your house with books won't make your kid a better student.

Just having your roster filled with draft picks won't consistently get you to the playoffs. Having a Franchise QB will.

Messenger target acquired. Messenger successfully shot.

No on circles the wagons and shoots the messenger quite like a Bills fan.

Yet here we are 17 years later.

He conveniently left out Whaley's scorecard in trades, FA acquisitions and waiver wire pickups/practice squad grabs...wonder why?

Perhaps cause they have been near best in the NFL Level since Whaley took over? But let's only harp on one of the five ways you can obtain players...that's where the agenda comes in. Focus on one area, which honestly I think he has done a decent job at, to be truthful, and ignore the other 80% of the the method of player acquisition where he excels at because it doesn't fit the narrative he wants to write...

and for the most part two games away from making the post-season, so close yet so far.

The people feeding Timmay the troll by actually considering what he is saying seem very quick to forget how low this team really was. The Dick Jauron teams that went 7-9 those 3 years were much worse than their record. The teams that he and Marv helped to assemble were complete sh*t. You want to talk about whiffing on draft picks? Go back to take a look at Donahoe and Marv. Whaley is the best GM we've had since the late 90's, but people want to run him off because he hasn't been perfect nor have we gotten a potential HOF QB in the draft yet. People also want to whine about some of the contracts handed out. I will give you that one on Dareus, but the rest? Have you seen the market these days? You also need to take into consideration he hasn't been given a fair shake on bringing in his own guy at the HC position either. Marrone wasn't his choice and neither was Rex. Whaley is not the problem, but the Pegs either need to let him do his job completely or let him go. Russ Brandon's meddling *ss needs to be let go no matter what they end up doing. He is the one constant in this equation for a long time now.

The only correct take on this.

They aren't that close though. The schedule this season parted for them. They had teams ranked probably #32, #31, #30, #29, and #28x2 on their schedule. Also add in a New England team with pretty much no QB option, and a somehow bad Arizona team with the 1PM EST start, and Cincinnati... who are both 5-8-1.

Each time they played a team who mattered, they got their teeth kicked in (save the Seattle MNF game). They are 0-7 vs teams over .500

This team does enough to beat the dregs of the NFL most of the time... but when they play a team who matters, there is almost no contest. To me, that isn't close at all, and it has been the same pattern through a long period of time.

They are also aging in a number of spots, have expiring contracts, and also now are against the cap. They have some holes are are about to be presented with even more problems. This isn't a team on the come. They are a pulled McCoy hammy from being a 3 or 4 win team.

? - You're joking, right? He flat out stats that he spoke with personnel guys from 8 other teams.

Funny how he doesn't state which teams these guys work for. Why is that? Could it be because the 2 that said they wait until they declare to "watch tape" are from winning organizations and don't fit his narrative? There's no reason not to list which team these personnel guys are from. He was comparing teams earlier in the article.

And it's been pointed out in this thread, that Whaley does in fact send scouts to junior players games. So his whole point, unless it's just about watching tape, is incorrect. Whaley does scout underclassman.

Funny that you are how old and don't understand that any reporter giving away their sources or even clues to who their sources are isn't long for the business.,

Donahoe was better at drafting. You lose all credibility here.

Clements, Schobel, Henry, Jennings, Mcgee, Crowell, Kelsey, Mcgahee, Evans

who has Whaley really brought in?

Gilmore, Watkins, Darby????? That's really about it.

They had their opportunities and the team had enough talent to get it done. What you saw was Rex and his defensive staff's inept game planning. How about find a way to get off of the field on 3rd down? It's snowing outside, pretty heavily. Do you think Pittsburgh will run the ball a lot today? Ajayi had 200 yards last week. Do you think running might be the focus again this week? The Seattle game? We got jobbed by the refs all night long. You can call that an excuse if you want to, but it was blatant in some instances. We were one busted coverage away from beating the Ravens opening week. Minus the loss to the Jets, which was our only bad loss, 4 of our losses are division leaders and all of the rest of them to teams currently in the playoffs. Who's contract is expiring that Whaley's horrible deals will prevent us from re-signing? Gilmore? This is the same guy who's head everyone was calling for 4 weeks ago because he was kitty-footing around on the field. Zach Brown? He will get overpaid by someone and it was Whaley who brought him in. Lorax? Another guy that NO ONE saw coming that we took a flier on. Who else? A couple of depth CB's we signed to one year deals? Robert Woods? I do like Woods, but it's not like he could never be replaced. This could be a team on the rise with the right staff in place and a couple of moves in the offseason to sure up RT and the WR position, along with working FA for some decent depth like we did last year.

Haha, really?

So wait, when he says he talks to a personnel guy that works for the Bills, that's ok... but mentioning which teams these other guys work for is off limits. Cmon, tell me you don't believe what you actually wrote. There are hundreds of guys that work in the personnel department of evey team, the Bills have around 130.

You honestly think if Tim Graham mentions which team these guys work for, that really outs them?
