I like the list, mostly and agree. Wilder Jr. was simply awful. There was one run where he completely missed the hole and ran into the wall, and what got me was that the hole was right in front of him in the direction he was already running.. LOL

As for EJ, I said it last year during camp and I'll say it again. EJ Manuel will be a starting QB in this league next year.

Tim-

Possibly so but he would be much wiser to just take his place as a backup behind TT. The pressure is off of him right now and he doesn't have to win a job. He can be confident to just hold the clipboard and learn the game better. Perhaps Bills offer him a 2 year extension and he takes it If Cordale continues to show hope. We will see

If Bills gave him an extension there would be a reason for the terrorism warning from Orchard Park police - the fans (not all, just the irrational, stoned and/or drunk ones) would be rioting; good news most of the damage would be to themselves and the tables they brought to jump on.

I guess I didn't see the head scratchers yesterday. He was clearly upset with receivers at least twice for running the wrong routes, and got in their faces about it. That's new. Much better touch on his throws as well.

Have you seen the #2 QBs in this league? I realize all of EJ's detractors respond with "London" every time the guy is mentioned but he looks capable of holding down the fort to me.

EJ looks like EJ to me. Not better or worse. He usually shows well in the preseason games. And in regular season he is wildly inconsistent. Even in the London game, as bad as he was for a long stretch, he also helped them come back in the game with a chance to win in the end. He's exactly what an NFL backup QB is. A guy who is talented, but not consistent enough to be a long term starter. We can definitely do worse than him at that spot.

Nobody seemed to have started one of these for last night's game yet so here was my take... who helped themselves and who hurt themselves as the Bills beat the Giants 21-0.

Helped:

Kouandjio and Groy.... I think both of these guys have probably ensured themselves of places on the 53. Kouandjio has been one of the feel good stories of pre-season so far for Buffalo having finally looked like an NFL calibre tackle. Him taking that swing job definitely should help the Bills feel better about their depth at the position. Ryan Groy continues to be ahead of Velasco at this stage as the interior swing guy after another solid outing and interestingly when Velasco came in for Eric Wood they switched the two around from last week as Groy moved to centre and Velasco (more of whom to come) came in at guard. I think Groy has the edge at both spots.

The defensive backs.... It was a good night for all the Bills defensive backs. The first unit (which interestingly included Duke Williams rather than Robert Blanton alongside Corey Graham) shut the Giants and Eli Manning down and the guys that are in that mix in the second / third units, Corey White, Sterling Moore and Jonathan Dowling for example, all made plays.

Jerel Worthy and Leger Douzable.... These two were both extremely active around the football once they came in to relieve the first team defensive line. They blocked running lanes, got into the backfield and harassed the overmatched Ryan Nassib. They started the night top of the backup D-Line shuffle in my mind and did nothing to disprove the theory that they are next in line.

Walt Powell and Greg Little.... The plays that these two made should help them separate in the crowded receiver battle. Walt Powell's contributions in the first two games both as a receiver and a returner should pretty much book him a spot on the team so long as he stays healthy. He showed up again with 3 grabs for 46 yards. Greg Little had 3 for 35 and a touchdown and I have to believe that he leads the battle to be the "size guy" in the receiver room come the final shuffle, ahead of Dez Lewis and Jarret Boykin who was held without a catch last night.

Rex Ryan, Rob Ryan and Dennis "You presume I know what's going on" Thurman.... Man the defense impressed last night. The communication is noticeably better than a year ago. Will it carry through to the regular season? The proof will be in the pudding but for now at least it looks like they are as good as their word.

Hurt:

Fernando Velasco.... A second appearance in two games on this list for the free agent pickup. I said last week that I wanted to see him at guard before I totally gave up on him.... well it wasn't quite as horrific as him at centre but he still got beat on a couple of plays forcing EJ and Cardale to throw before they really wanted to. I'm not impressed and I don't think he is a total lock for the roster if someone who is an out and out centre that the Bills like got cut late by another team it wouldn't amaze me if they picked him up and let Velasco go.

James Wilder Jnr.... Not as bad as last week but he still seems to lack the explosion that you need at the NFL level. Seems to take him a long time to get up to full speed. He is definitely a longshot for the roster right now although they might still bring him back for the practice squad because he does have more size than the others now that Karlos has gone.

Justin Zimmer.... Compared to Worthy and Douzable it was a less positive night for Justin Zimmer. His lack of size does seem to go against him and he was physically overwhelmed on a handful of snaps where he allowed offensive linemen to get on him early... one of those sprung the big 67 yard run that was the Giants only real offensive success of the night. I struggle to now see him making the final 53 man roster.

Jordan Gay.... Given a chance to show he could be more than a kick-off specialist Jordan Gay proved that he is just a kick-off specialist. If Carpenter handles everything in game 3 then that is a sure sign to me that Gay's job is in jeopardy.

Nick O'Leary.... Still looks slow, still looks like no threat with the ball in his hands and still looks ineffective as a blocker. Definitely behind Clay and Gragg, probably behind Annen and Dray.... but did you know he is Jack Nickluas' grandson? Yea, so that's cool.

good list.

using Zimmer as FB was interesting. Blown up the first play and did a nice job second time around. But Felton is not going anywhere IMO.

Worthy was worthy and Leger had a couple errors made came back after it.

Albright Z Brown Moore Alexander Little Powell +

Groy was good and bad. Cyrus made me proud mostly.

Loved the Coaches comment !! Well done Bill .

EJ still has to prove he is what a back-up is...he has not done that yet. Back-ups don't lose the game for you ... EJ does.

Over half the backups in this league are proven to lose games for you and it for the reasons stated above - they are inconsistent right through. EJ is a mid tier NFL backup. That's all he is but we could have worse.

Like Nassib perhaps ?

EJ made some nice plays for sure. He threw a couple low and looked sketchy. But later on he went through all his progressions to find a reception

In fact they often lose games for you. That is why they are backups. Look at the list around the league and you will not find many worth having. Nassib is one I would not want, and so is the dufus they played last week, Tolzien. How about Geno Smith? Think he will lose a few games for you? Pretty good bet based on history.

Re: Felton, I wonder if having him on the roster and active on Sundays forces opposing d-coordinators to prepare specific personnel groupings to match up against the "heavy" sets, even if the Bills don't end up using too much of it - distraction and diversion, etc. Just a thought.

When I heard Rex's interview at halftime, I told my boys that Gay just got cut. Sure enough, Carp came out to take the kickoff!

I'd be surprised if Gay makes it through tomorrow.

Maybe they can keep Nick around to be Rex's caddy.

Of course it does, and a good point

At this point I don't know if it's funny or sad that we are arguing about our back up qb.

I get the feeling of it was anyone but EJ this discussion wouldn't be happening.

He was what looked like 12 yards deep on one 3rd down play. He moved up a little bit at the snap, but, common man (as you say whether by design or not...).

emmm Tim...if you said that last year you were wrong...

Well played, sir. Well played.

You know when you actually start watching teams play you realize that hardly ANY teams have ideal backup situations.....as a matter of fact.....EJ actually looks favorably compared to most

He is definately gone next year.....so glad CJ has this red shirt year with us

Agreed. I wouldn't be opposed to him staying on the team next year but I get the feeling that CJ will make enough progress by next year to make EJ expendable and draft another later round QB.

I get that. I root for all 3 of them. I just think after his failing to be a starting QB in the league everything else he does is over analyzed to no end.

Yes, we are doing that with Cardale already in his second showing i noticed...
