Great Draft, but let's keep it in check

Recommended Posts

I'm very happy with how the draft worked out. I would have liked to have seen an OT, but where our rush game was ranked last year, we will survive.

Two things to consider as we wrap up this weekend. There is a general consensus that this draft was deep with talent, but not superstars. There wasn't a Khalil Mack or Andrew Luck. There are a lot of solid starters and depth, which a lot of teams need and that's great. Also, it's rare for a rookie to translate their college stats to the NFL 100%. I've always assumed them to put up about 70% of their senior stats in college and that's worked out fairly well. With that, I expect our top 3 picks to contribute and start immediately, but they only going going to solidify our team and help clean up the weakness we had.

The other thing is Rex. Rex had an amazingly talented Defensive team and he squandered it. Now, hopefully he has the guys he wants that fits his scheme, but he hasn't shown a top defensive team in quite some time.

No matter what, the offense is relatively the same as last year, with our hopes based upon TT and Sammy taking another leap forward, Woods being healthy, and the offensive line coming together more.

Defensively, I think we saw growth at the end of last year and we've again filled in holes that Rex needed.

I overall think this draft made us better and I think a lot of things broke our way. But I overall want to keep in check the expectations we are putting onto rookies and Rex.

NOT BEING PESSIMISTIC. Just seeing it as history has shown us.

Glad SDS could provide you with your own personal soapbox. Good god. Like any of us need or want to be told how we should or shouldn't get excited about our football team.

I think it should be added that while we did not make big splashes in free agency we did find some veteran pieces that should help us this year

Zach Brown is the other piece of the LB puzzle.....an extremely fast cover linebacker. I feel much better about our linebacker core now.

Robert Blanton is not exactly chopped liver

We also signed a veteran reliable OG that can play all the interior positions.

We were frugal.....but the chess pieces we did pick up have great value.

For those blasting the point of this, read through some these threads about players drafted and thinking championship.

No this is very important, you're right. You've helped dampen enthusiasm - society needs more of that. There is nothing worse than optimism and joy.

A few posters had good points of putting it on coaching from this point forward. We have all bought into the concept that Rex needed Rex guys and now he has them. The draft was dedicated to defense and Rex and company need to prove their worth. All the guys drafted are good at what they do. Let's see how coaching can transform some talented guys into a cohesive unit.

I was critical of the Ragland selection because I don't think he compliments Lawson as well as some other 2nd round backers could have. From a distance we look slow up the middle and at safety. Zack Brown is going to be a key, if he can push Preston to depth that will make everyone's job easier. Hughes and Lawson are at their best when rushing the QB, if Jerry is our best cover LB this year I see problems.

With this current unit we will have a distinct advantage against teams who struggle with their quick passing game. Teams like NE will give us problems until we find a balance on defense, the Brady suspension may be an early season blessing. Baltimore, jetsx2, dolphinsx2, Browns, 9ers, and the Rams will all struggle against an overpowering front 7. That's 8 wins, sorry for being overly critical of the Ragland trade I wanted a complementary player for Lawson - I'm all in let's see what happens.

Did you wander in here believing you were answering Scott's ad for an optimism regulator? We already filled that position with BillsVet years ago.

Well let's all just sit down and mope. All the holes weren't filled... WTF? Were you expecting a XXX Porno?

Show me where it's written that no other roster moves will be made, no FAs will become available, and what players are going to quit on their team and teammates this year.

Every year it's the same. The Draft comes and there are a few bright moments, then the boo birds come out with magnifying glasses and microscopes to find the pimples on the azz of each draft pick. Oh, and the coaches suck. Like we haven't heard THAT refrain much for the past twenty years either.

Christmas morning must be such a downer for some people.

Frankly, I feel better about this Draft and this year's squad's potential than I have in years. Call me crazy, call me a fool, but I'm just not into Debbie Downers with poopy diapers the day after this Draft.

I hate people who get excited, optimistic, and genuinely considerate of others. I'd much rather encircle myself with pessimistic, sarcastic, glass is half empty person who could find the bad in any good situation (cue the sarcasm).

Ok, just kidding FireRex, and you're right, it was a good draft, but doesn't mean we will even replicate an 8-8 record. I too am cation sly optimistic, with great skepticism over whether Rex can have a disciplined team, not causing stupid penalties, having an effective defense, and will these rookies be able to handle his scheme defense. With that said, it was so much fun over the weekend believing St. Doug making very sound decisions in who they picked matching need and talent. These last few weeks I've agreed with the people we kept, vs. let go, and the role players we brought in to fill needs. These next few days will show what a saleman he and Rex are for the most talented UDFA.

I just want hope, and for now, believe we can get to the playoffs. I want to believe TT is well coached and takes the leap to a franchise position. Bottom line is I want to believe. FireRex, you didn't rain on everyone's parade so I'm not slamming you, just taking a good natured poke at you a little for the caution. What the hell bud, it's May. We can always go pessimistic by October if things don't go well. Happy Sunday everyone, and Go Bills!!!

I do agree with you opening statement 100%. Pay no attention to the ones that saw no hope whatsoever after last season.

True, if they drafted all OL when we struggled so badly on D last year THAT would make me mad!

Got to think positive or why be a fan. If our D was so fantastic 2 years ago why did we lose 7 games. Could be are D was not that Good. D wins championships , right.

You win. You 100% win for that post. 😀 Fantastic work sir

And it's not about being positive or pessimistic. It's about keeping myself in check going into the season.

I do the same **** every year. We signed X or we hired Z, so this year is the year to make the playoffs. Then we lose to the Raiders. Then we go from first to last in defense. Something finds a way and the crash to earth is painful.

So, I'm happy with how the draft turned out. But I need to temper expectations, if only for my own sanity
