Manther Posted April 18, 2014 Share Posted April 18, 2014 If we select Matthews at #9.....he MUST play RT. Otherwise, Glenn walks for LT money after two years. If Glenn stays at LT and Matthews plays RT....you can resign Glenn for LT and since Matthews is a 1st round pick we can have him for 5 years instead of 4. So, it gives us bookend OTs for a minimum of 5 years! If Matthews plays LT it gives us bookend OTs for only two years. That would be a true waste of the #9 overall pick. IF we pick Matthews and I strongly prefer Evans, he MUST play RT. Plus with Matthews playing RT 3 of 4 seasons in College and then 5 of 5 seasons in the NFL and NO LT experience (maybe beside some injury replacements) for a total of 8 of 9 season I strongly doubt he would be lured from us for LT money. This means Cordy Glenn will most likely not be resigned. Can we afford both for a few years? Sure. But when Glenn is up to resign having another player that can play left tackle already on the roster WILL play a role in what the front office offers. Ok, I can see you're really struggling with this so let me help you .... drafting a tackle will have nothing to do with Glenn getting resigned. We can afford both in 4 years if we wanted to. If Matthews projects as a better LT and/or PROVES in training camp/preseason games that he is a better LT than Glenn then I suspect that he'll be the starting LT on opening day. End of story. Glenn is going to play where the HC tells him to play........for the betterment of the team. Heck, it was suggested that he move to one of the OG positions at one time for Pete sake. I would say that it's a fairly safe projection to say that Matthews projects as a better LT than Glenn if Glenn was a R2 pick (and barely considered an NFL caliber LT) while Matthews was projected to be not only a R1 pick, but the #1 pick in the entire draft. The real kicker that many of you don't seem to get is that this kid has the bloodline of an NFL All-Pro and HOFer. The Bills would be extremely fortunate to get this kid at #9 overall. (4 years with a club option for a 5th) If Glenn continues to play well in 2014...sign him to his extension in the off season. If Matthews plays to expectations you have "bookend" tackles through the 2018 season. Why would anyone consider not picking Matthews because of what may happen in 2018? We don't know where the cap will be in 2018. We don't know how the player's health will change by 2018. We don't know a lot about what will happen between May 2014 and February 2019. great post. With wood at center that should lock our line up for the decade. I'm liking this o line pick more and more. Although I think we have a need at cb that can't be ignored. If indeed the Bills do bring in a top OT with that #9 pick, or even trade back and still draft an OT later in the first or second round. I can assure you that the rookie wherever selected will start at RT. Now, with the right side strengthened the weak points are still at the guards, as both players are very questionable IMO. Should the Bills shore up at least one OG spot in the first three picks then the entire line would be upgraded to the point that they could easily become a dominate line in the league. That said, opposing team will no longer focus their primary attack points at the OG's or RT like they did the last two years. Then we will see if Glenn is truly a dominate LT in the league, as teams will no longer have other areas to exploit. This is something I would really like to find out if Glenn is capable at that point, If he is then fine, he stays at LT. If not, he could be moved to RT. All this speculation is moot in my opinion, as the Bills have about as much chance of drafting an OT, plus an OG with the first three picks has about as much chance in happening as the Sabres have in winning a championship....this year! Anyone who has seen Glenn go up against some of the toughest assignments in the league the last couple years knows full well how good he is. You can count on one hand the number of times he's been beaten vs. by the best DEs the opponents have to offer. Pass rush specialists are meant to be isolated against OTs. Mathews only played LT last season at Texas AM, Luke Joekle play left tackle the 2 seasons previous, so he had more experience on the right side. There is no shame in right tackle despite what people say in the media, some think its like a 3rd world country. They still get paid well and go to Super Bowls. Mathews would give us some depth at LT if Cordy happens to get hurt. But for the love of God can we stop with all the drama about who wont play there and how Cordy walks if we sign Mathers.
