Maybin getting a lot of NY hype

NYT on Maybin

Interesting article. I wasn't a big Maybin fan. I thought it was the right move to cut him and move on and I don't take (too much) pleasure in seeing ex-Bills fail. It seems like he is getting an awful lot of hype this pre-season. It sounds like he has a big mouth though, which probably fits right in with the Jets collecition of yappers.

In the grand scheme, I'm guessing he's not getting that much hype. Young, highly drafted guy comes to a new team and he's bound to get a few "this is a new start" type articles. I'd guess he's gotten no more than anyone else.

Noticed a snippet of video from their intra-squad scrimmage the other night and he was rushing the passer when D'Brickashaw Ferguson just rested a paw on him and Maybin crumbled like a cheap accordion.

He is a liability in ANY game situation that isn't a third and long and where he can't rush from the "wide 9." Teets on a bull.

GO BILLS!!!

He will never be anything more then a role player

I don't get how anyone ever thought he could be an every down DE in the NFL

I prayed for someone to draft him before the Bills picked that year

“When you talk about Aaron Maybin, I want you to be talking about one of the most dominant players in the game,” Maybin said, sitting under a tent after a recent practice. “Not just a pass rusher. A dominant all-around player.”

Don't hold your breath, bub. Don't you have to target being an every-down player, first?

Whenever I see pictures involving the words "Maybin bulked up", it's his biceps. Curls aren't going to do much against a LT that can knock you on your arse.

" A relentless rusher off the edge, Maybin, who last season forced four fumbles and registered six sacks, could line up inside, in the middle or, as he did in Saturday night’s scrimmage, as a down lineman, depending on how Pettine leverages matchups. But one of the more intriguing subplots of training camp is Maybin’s quest to shed his reputation as one-dimensional (according to ProFootballFocus.com, he rushed the quarterback on 94.9 percent, or 185, of his 195 passing plays last season, the most among regular 3-4 outside linebackers). The Jets’ coaches, especially Rex Ryan, would never try to discourage him, but there is a natural progression on the journey to dominance, and it starts with viability:[/b] can Maybin evolve into a true all-around linebacker — a pass-rushing dynamo, a run-stuffing fiend, an asset in coverage?"

This whole article and conversation simply has me Laughing my A$$ off. Seriously. OMFG  !!!!!!

Who can imagine him lining up in the middle? OR as a down lineman? Or a run stuffing fiend?? HAHAHHA

I love how the writer is talking about how his journey to dominance starts with VIABILITY. Really? Seriously?

Oh I love articles from training camps are so optimistic in the dog daze of summer.

Now can you imagine how are team feels about Maybin? Should be a fun first game!!

This thread is going to be littered with slams on Maybin, his weight, him being a bust, etc etc. I find it a bit comical though given that with no offseason, no training camp, no preseason, etc to actually get into game shape or learn the Jets playbook, he still found a way to amass 6 sacks and force some fumbles despite playing only 2/3s the season.

Guess how many Bills players had 6 sacks or more last year? Zero...In fact, no one in 2010 had more than 5.5 sacks either. You have to go back to Schobel in 2009 to find a Bill with 6 sacks or more, and even then it was only 10 over a full season.

So I laugh at people who mock him when he did more with less last year than anyone on our team. Is he the second coming of LT...not even close. But what he does have is a ton of rare athletic ability and a coaching staff working to put him in positions to capitalize on those abilities. Our staff didn't pick him nor believed in him and never gave him much of a chance. I would not be surprised at all if the kid puts up double digit sacks this year. Our staff didn't try and put him in a position to maximize his skill set...they installed a D and said either you fit or you don't.

He is not going to be confused with Ray Lewis, Patrick Willis, etc...but, I won't be surprised to see him putting up double digit sacks, and I do not know a team in the NFL that wouldn't like a guy who could consistently do that, even if that was all the excelled at.

I didn't like the pick of Maybin like most people, but the kid worked hard and has had struggles in his personal life since entering the league, and I respect his perseverance and dedication.

What preparation does he need to line up on the outside and rush the passer?? The article clearly says "he rushed the quarterback on 94.9 percent, or 185, of his 195 passing plays last season, the most among regular 3-4 outside linebackers".

I wonder if, say, Stephon Gilmore could accumulate 6 sacks in a season if Wanny lined him up on the outside and had him run around the tackle in numerous 3rd and forever scenarios where we were protecting a late lead? I also wonder if he can A) keep the weight on, for the first time in his career and B) if he can keep the weight, maintain his quickness.

Maybin is going to be effective on obvious passing situations where there is >8 yds to go and that is all. Teams are going to run misdirection, screens and power at him all day. He is a complete liability against the run and has no counter moves. He is a cover sack specialist. I love how there is never a mention of his 10 tackles in a 16 game season.

Our staff asked him to put on weight and he showed up to TC lighter than the year before, he was getting dominated by Ed Wang in one one drills and was pancaked by Marion Barber in preseason last year. What exactly did the coaching staff do wrong?

ok - quick question. Look at Anderson and Super Mario, hell Merriman, and Kelsey, now think about $%^^%$$ maybin at a whopping 245 lbs at wait a minute, Defensive End and tell me he is going to be any kind of threat.

Hell, I think Moorman could block him as smart and fast as he is at times.

I just love these JETS moves. Please keep going with Maybin, Tebow, new draft picks, and yes our best ally, Sanchez. Here's yo watching foot fettish loose this year.

He was battling an illness if I am not mistaken which was the reason for the weight loss that last TC.

And I didnt say the staff did anything wrong. I said they took an approach of either you fit our scheme or you don't rather than try and put him in a position to maximize what he can do. That doesnt mean our staff did something wrong, I love what they have done with our D. What I mean is that Maybin was not given an opportunity to do what he does best. They wanted him to be something he wasn't and it didn't work out. The Jets have decided to put Maybin in position to excel at what he can do, speed rush, rather than force him into being a player he isn't.

Derrick Thomas was known as mostly a one trick pony of sacking the QB too, and he was a dominant force teams had to game plan for. Maybin is no Derrick Thomas, but if he can prove he can get to the QB and get there fast with consistency, then teams will have to slide attention toward him freeing up other members of the D.

Its about being a disruption, and if they can harness Maybins speed to be a disruption then that is a valuable commodity for any D coordinator. He looked a lot worse when he was sitting on the sidelines...he never got a chance to play here, and maybe if he did he wouldn't have looked so useless.

Clearly, he isnt as useless as Bills fans want to make him out to be when he had more sacks and forced fumbles in limited time than any player on our D since 2009.
