Maybin getting a lot of NY hype

Recommended Posts

Clearly, he isnt as useless as Bills fans want to make him out to be when he had more sacks and forced fumbles in limited time than any player on our D since 2009.

I don't disagree with much of what you wrote, but repeating this meme doesn't make it more meaningful. They're pedestrian numbers accumulated as a situational player on a talented defense--- the Bills defense overall has been LESS THAN pedestrian since approximately 2005 or 2006, so it's a small wonder they haven't produced better individual stats.

Maybin was drafted to be a difference maker, and although his draft position is not his fault, he clearly needs to be surrounded by difference makers in order to be effective. More power to him if he can carve out an NFL career but a better comparison than Derrick Thomas might be a poor man's Dexter Manley. Thomas had astute football intelligence whereas Maybin has exhibited none.

Maybin is going to be effective on obvious passing situations where there is >8 yds to go and that is all. Teams are going to run misdirection, screens and power at him all day. He is a complete liability against the run and has no counter moves. He is a cover sack specialist. I love how there is never a mention of his 10 tackles in a 16 game season.

Here's all I need to know about how much better Maybin was than anyone on our team last season and how those great coaches in NY did such a great job maximizing his talents:

In the last four games of last season, with their season on the line and the Jets trying to make a push for the playoffs, Maybin didn't register a single stat in the scorebook. No sacks, no tackles, no nothing. Nada, zip, zilch. Pushing for a playoff spot, his great coaches had no more reason to play him in any thing other than obvious passing downs like they had all year. Yeah, he's on the cusp of becoming an all around player.

Spare me.

And while I'm glad he's overcome setbacks in his personal life and that he hustles and works hard, none of that seems to have made him humble. At all. He's a windbag like his coach.

GO BILLS!!!

You can safely ignore alphadawg. He is not capable of any kind of common sense middle road.

However, kudos to you on a well said post.

This thread is going to be littered with slams on Maybin, his weight, him being a bust, etc etc. I find it a bit comical though given that with no offseason, no training camp, no preseason, etc to actually get into game shape or learn the Jets playbook, he still found a way to amass 6 sacks and force some fumbles despite playing only 2/3s the season.

If I may pause your train of thought for a moment....Maybin reported to the Bills Training Camp when it opened last season

He was waived on 15 August and claimed by NY 17 August.

So he had pretty much the same length of training camp as anyone else last year, shortened by only 2 days, to get into game shape.

Regarding learning the Jets playbook, there seemed to be a number of little jokes about that from Jets coaches. He didn't have to learn a playbook - he was lined up outside and pointed at the QB "sic 'em!"

I'm not sure where the 2/3 of the season comes from. He was waived by the Jets 4 Sept and signed 28 Sept; I think that means he missed 4 games or 1/4 of the season.

We now return your train to its tracks.

Maybin... I am not pulling for him to fail for any other reason than he is on the jets. I do question if he was working as hard at putting on weight and improving technique while in buffalo.. I certainly didn't hear bout it, but it's not saying it wasn't happening just like the story chronicles now. If he wants to get 12 sacks on Brady I am all for it. If I am chan I would run the football right at him any time I see him on the field.

LOL...well I guess sticking to facts, football, and unbiased opinions makes it hard for people like you to read common sense.

I promise you that there is not a coach on any level of football that would not want a pass rush specialists that is capable of getting double digit sacks in a 16 game season. But I am sure you dont see the common sense in that either...lol.

I get it, people hate the Maybin pick (I did too). But the bottom line is not where he was picked but whether a team can find a serviceable usage of his talents. The Jets may have done just that, so there is reason for optimism for Maybin for them this year.

" A relentless rusher off the edge, Maybin, who last season forced four fumbles and registered six sacks, could line up inside, in the middle or, as he did in Saturday night’s scrimmage, as a down lineman, depending on how Pettine leverages matchups. But one of the more intriguing subplots of training camp is Maybin’s quest to shed his reputation as one-dimensional (according to ProFootballFocus.com, he rushed the quarterback on 94.9 percent, or 185, of his 195 passing plays last season, the most among regular 3-4 outside linebackers). The Jets’ coaches, especially Rex Ryan, would never try to discourage him, but there is a natural progression on the journey to dominance, and it starts with viability:[/b] can Maybin evolve into a true all-around linebacker — a pass-rushing dynamo, a run-stuffing fiend, an asset in coverage?"

This whole article and conversation simply has me Laughing my A$$ off. Seriously. OMFG  !!!!!!

Who can imagine him lining up in the middle? OR as a down lineman? Or a run stuffing fiend?? HAHAHHA

I love how the writer is talking about how his journey to dominance starts with VIABILITY. Really? Seriously?

Oh I love articles from training camps are so optimistic in the dog daze of summer.

Now can you imagine how are team feels about Maybin? Should be a fun first game!!

Please let him line up over Eric Wood as a down lineman!!

I agree 100%. And maybe one day the Jets will sign one because they don't currently have one on their roster.

Then you better be prepared to run on 3rd and 12, cuz that's the only time he's gonna be out there*.

And you better do it in game 1, because there's a good chance that once he hits his playing weight of 196 lbs, the jests are gonna cut him.

* I do think he has an outside shot at beating Tebow for the punt protector job.

If you are talking about a player who was on the roster through the offseason, played through TC, played through the preseason, and then started all 16 games...yes, then they are fair to call them pedestrian. When you factor in what he dealt with off the field, never getting on field time in his stint with us, no offseason, the lockout, not much of a training camp, no preseason really, joining a team 4 weeks into the season with no time to learn the D, and then only being a situational player not seeing the field a lot...then his stats look relatively impressive under those circumstances. If he did that in Buffalo last year, this board would be all over it saying he is going to be a breakout player this year.

Freeney - 8.5 sacks, 19 tackles (a guy Bills fans wanted us to sign, and thats over 16 games...just 19 tackles)

Orakpo - 9 sacks (the guy everyone wanted instead)

Wake - 8.5 sacks (another guy Bills fans wanted)

C. Mathews - 6 sacks (15 games)

Just to name a few players who were on the same team as the previous year, had an offseason, and played all year...and yet their sack numbers were barely better than his. Does that make those guys pedestrian players too?

I am not saying Maybin is as good as those guys. Not by a long shot. What I am saying is that 6 sacks under the circumstances he played last year is impressive. And I think Rex Ryan knows quite a bit more about football and NFL defense than anyone on this board, and he seems to think the kid is a player and can an effective player for them this year.

So good for Maybin, kid was always respectful and worked hard. I hate the Jets, but still wish the kid well.

Please point me to the facts that say Maybin has a double digit sack season.

When did I say him having a double digit sack season was a fact?

And if you used common sense, he gathered 6 sacks for a team that he didnt join until they were going into week 4 with hardly no NFL live playing experience, no experience in their system, no offseason, barely a TC or preseason. And yet if you projected his stats over 16 games started it would put him among the league leaders in sacks.

So the FACTS are, this kid put up more sacks than any Bill has since 2009 while barely playing last year. Doesnt take rocket science to figure out if he can build on that and become a starter then double digit sacks are possible. You mention common sense, and that my friend is what we call common sense.

Of course, there is no guarantee he will build on it, and no I am not guaranteeing he will. But this isnt about whats certain, it was about why there is optimism in NY about him, and IMO its justified based on what he did under the circumstances for them in brief appearances last year.

Your concession that you are incorrect is accepted. The statement "so and so knows about football" is always a sign that you are wrong.

btw, all NFL players were locked out. Not just Aaron Maybin.

You're not just assuming he's going to repeat the success he had until late in the season, but improve on it. That is not a 'fact'. That is conjecture.

6 sacks in 3 seasons. 2 per year on average per season. Jauron and co. picked this turd and the big mouth turd picked him up after their first rounder failed as a pass rusher (vernon ghoulston). He is not a good football player, he may pick up a handful of sacks every year but he is a bad player with a huge undeserved ego. Its just another reason why dick jaruon is gone.....terrible personnel decisions. I understand why "alphadog" likes him, because they are both clueless and think they are "alpha dogs" .....just stop posting dude, you are embarrasing yourself.

His six sacks for the Jets would have led the team for Buffalo last year. I know they were garbage sacks but so were the ten sacks against the Redksins. Would it surprise anyone here that the last two defensive coordinators were unable to teach him how to be an NFL OLB. DJ wanted him to play DE. I mean my god how bad was he at talent evaluation. Did they even weigh him before drafting him? Still looks like a one trick pony and not a very good one but as has been pointed out before he is still young, has never been injured, and now may have competent coaching at the correct position.

What preparation does he need to line up on the outside and rush the passer?? The article clearly says "he rushed the quarterback on 94.9 percent, or 185, of his 195 passing plays last season, the most among regular 3-4 outside linebackers".

Which begs the question, what was he doing on the other ten plays, given that he's not capable of doing anything else on a football field.

Just a couple points...

First, Maybe didn't join the Jest at week 4. As was stated by another poster already

Second, I'm not sure why you brought up other players to compare Maybe to. Freeney has had 6, 10+ sack seasons and over 280+ tackles throughout his career. He's also 32 years old. At this point Maybe isn't worthy of holding his jock strap. The other ones you've listed have all done something that Maybe hasn't... They have gone out and proven they can have a 10+ sack season.

Third, here are the lists of teams Maybe recorded a sack with... Buffalo(2), Baltimore(1), Miami(1), San Diego(1) and Washington(1)... Considering Buffalo's line was depleted because of injury when he had those 2 sacks and Washington's line was shown by the Bills to be suspect, 3 of those sacks came against very suspect lines. Is that really anything to hang your hat on?

Fourth, Maybe didn't record a single stat in 6 of his games... let that sink in for a second. And if he wasn't starting or made the active roster, what does that tell you about his ability?

Facts are facts and comparing him to an abismal Buffalo defense doesn't make your argument for him any better. Would he have had 6 sacks on the last years Bills defense? If I had to bet, I'd say surely not. In half of the games he recorded a stat(sack or tackle) the Jest lost anyways. So did his presence really help the Jest, at all? IMO, his stats are a reflection of a Jest defense that was 5th overall and nothing more.

I don't think anyone here is truly hating on Maybe, they are just saying what they see.
