Maybin getting a lot of NY hype

Recommended Posts

And that was with EXTENSIVE playing time. He played late into every game, even with the 3s and 4s.

GO BILLS!!!

to be fair, most of that time was in a regular role, not the specialized role the Jets made for him

I watched him in the third game and any time an offensive lineman got anywhere near him it was over. He did, however, have two good plays where he got into the backfield and chased the QB around, to no avail. One was actually a pretty good stunt up the middle. Other than that, however, he was pretty ineffectual when I was watching, and I was specifically watching him. All he's really got is his "quicks"--once a blocker gets anywhere near him, he's done....

And to be clear, by "blocker" you mean anyone with a pulse.

Wow, is this thread about Donte still going on? He just wasn't the player we needed at that position, wtf is it with the crusading and debating about a guy we had all the reason in the world to release. He was drafted way too high by a brain dead FO, I think that is fixed, he is long gone. Lets move on now, nothing to see here.

I think you might have the wrong thread...

This thread is going to be littered with slams on Maybin, his weight, him being a bust, etc etc. I find it a bit comical though given that with no offseason, no training camp, no preseason, etc to actually get into game shape or learn the Jets playbook, he still found a way to amass 6 sacks and force some fumbles despite playing only 2/3s the season.

Guess how many Bills players had 6 sacks or more last year? Zero...In fact, no one in 2010 had more than 5.5 sacks either. You have to go back to Schobel in 2009 to find a Bill with 6 sacks or more, and even then it was only 10 over a full season.

So I laugh at people who mock him when he did more with less last year than anyone on our team. Is he the second coming of LT...not even close. But what he does have is a ton of rare athletic ability and a coaching staff working to put him in positions to capitalize on those abilities. Our staff didn't pick him nor believed in him and never gave him much of a chance. I would not be surprised at all if the kid puts up double digit sacks this year. Our staff didn't try and put him in a position to maximize his skill set...they installed a D and said either you fit or you don't.

He is not going to be confused with Ray Lewis, Patrick Willis, etc...but, I won't be surprised to see him putting up double digit sacks, and I do not know a team in the NFL that wouldn't like a guy who could consistently do that, even if that was all the excelled at.

I didn't like the pick of Maybin like most people, but the kid worked hard and has had struggles in his personal life since entering the league, and I respect his perseverance and dedication.

Well said and I agree with every word.

He held out all of training camp as a rookie who really had a small body of work in college. It hurt the team, showed his selfishness, and hurt his already weak skills. 4 forced fumbles is impressive. 6 garbage sacks are not. The stat you forgot to mention is the liability such a light LB brings to your defense, and how many yards the opposition gains on plays he is on his back or pushed upfield.

We cut him, and the Jets cut him once already too. I don't agree that he'll be a factor on any NFL team.

I think whether he amounts to anything or not anywhere else in the league, he was just such a wrong pick for the Bills at the time. Regardless of whomever else was on the board, the last thing the Bills needed was a project specialist-type player who was very, very green for the NFL.

I think the Bills drafted like it was baseball there for awhile, selecting guys who were very young with their high picks in hopes of getting more of their prime years in a Bills uniform. Maybin had way too much growing up to do. Factor in that he had personal setbacks, and it was way too much to throw top draft pick expectations at him, especially on a team starving for a pass rush. I still don't view Maybin's chances of success as very high, but if he had been drafted with the Jets or, especially, with the Ravens or Pittsburgh - organizations with some stability, deep talent and a culture of leadership on the D - he might have reached his potential. I would say that would have gone double had he been selected at a more humbling slot in the draft. Hopping onto Dick Jauron's rudderless ship was clearly never going to get him there.
