That same week the NFL is ready to conduct HGH testing. The NFL PA resist, trying to stall the process, proably to protect some players, and he suddenly has an injury. If he is on IR, is he exempt from subtance testing for the rest of the season? Either way it a big blow I think. If he was caught again it would be a year suspension. I don't see that the Bills giving him a shot cost them much; overall it was a solid net positive. Now we get to see what these young guys have got. It was clear as day. Give it a rest Robo-tripper. You know nobody said Maybin was a probowler. All I will say is 3 sacks and 3 forced fumbles in how many games? Here is another interesting fact for you....Maybin and Merriman have the same number of probowls in the last 3 years Barnett is one. That's working out pretty well for us.(I don't know if he made the probowl but he did lead Greenbay in tackles a bunch of years) Look, they took a chance on merriman and it didn't work out. He should have never been drafted while they had Brees but he was on the roster. Likewise you never came close to qualifying much less quantifying the risk of signing Merriman, but judged it to be a bad one. Pure speculation against pure speculation. Glad you feel vindicated, but that point was definitely missed in the original cluster F of a thread. Go back and check the threads. I threw out a number and said it was a bad risk. Everyone tried to blast me up and down about how it was a "good risk" to sign him for a few million. I of course argued that that money could be used to sign a difference maker. Sometimes the difference between a pro bowler and a lunch pail veteran is only a couple million. Nobody could even come close to qualifying much less quantifying the risk but judged it to be a good one. I don't know about you but if I walk into a casino and I don't know the odds of the game...I'm not playing it and I SURE as hell would not say it was good risk. That is just a dumb uninformed decision. I hoped this guy would prove me wrong. I would have been happy if he could have been 75% as successful as he used to be statistically. My heart wanted to believe he could become a valuable contributor but my head told me he was done. Not just done in Buffalo, but done for good. His body is broken beaten and scarred. I feel really bad for the guy and worse for this team. It leaves an enormous hole AFTER THE TRADE DEADLINE and getting rid of Maybin. At this point I don't think he will ever be anything more than an IR spot waiting to happen. relax pal, even though it didn't work out, you're completely out to lunch here so stop trying to act like you're smarter than everyone else it's not like his two million dollar salary put them at the cap and they were unable to afford any other players...if the bills don't sign a guy, its because they don't feel he's worth what he's asking (whether fans agree or not)...it's not because they don't have the money or have their own internal salary cap...i'm really curious as to who you are referring to as a playmaker they could have had but skimped out because of merriman's salary it was a risk-free signing (other than the money ralph ponied up from his share of the tv revenue) that had no long-term effects...coleman is back and you can't really say merriman held anyone back from developing i'm not clear what was lost, but what was gained was some goodwill towards buffalo by a former star player who initially hated the idea of coming here, but then changed his tune and helped recruit a guy like nick barnett so good luck to merriman...wouldn't mind seeing him get healthy and give it another go with the bills next year Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Just my opinion but at least I took a stand and tried to back it up. He was a free agent, not traded. San Diego offered him 5/50 but too much of it was tied to incentives. Brees was insulted and chose not to re-up with the Chargers. Not exactly dumped but the Chargers weren't serious about re-signing a guy with an injured shoulder. GO BILLS!!! You did offer an opinion and explained your position and the rationale behind it, as did others with the opposite opinion. Without any basis for an expected return and a risk factor based on analysis, we can't even begin to discuss good investment vs. poor investment, which is relative anyway when you factor in risk tolerance/aversion. So as you can see, the original thread really boiled down to "I don't know anything but my gut says it isn't worth it" vs. "I don't know anything but my gut says why not."
