Okay, let me stop BS'ing.. This move is confusing, irritating, and frustrating. Chris Kelsay at his position is the equivalent to what Trent Edwards was at his. He is arguably the slowest LB on the entire squad! Which is saying A LOT, considering all of the LBs run as if they have cleats made of lead. Getting a faster front 7 is the top priority in turning the defensive performance around. A backwards move was made today. The only news that would've been worse, would've been the following: "after only two games this year, Trent Edwards has agreed to a contract extension, believed to be in the neighborhood of 6 years and $72M with $43M guaranteed."

Didn't the top FA linebacker (Dansby) sign for about 8 per year this past off season and that was considered way overpaying for his talent.

 

Who would have paid Kelsey anything close to that in he off season? Unreal.

I think i'm in the minority, wait I know i'm in the minority when I say that this extention really left me with no reaction at all. The value of the contract means squat since they could cut him next year if a more servicable LB is signed or drafted. He could very well be a backup next season (if there is one) making $6M a year, there is no salary cap as it stands and I can't see one returning anytime soon. People act like the 24 mil is coming out of their own pocket. CONTRACTS ARE NOT GURANTEED IN THE NFL!! The Bills will not end up paying him more than 12 mil and if they do....then he will have become a solid OLB and warrants not being cut.

I specifically watched him on Sunday because of the contract talk.

He looked like complete garbage in that last game. Both of those rookie Tight Ends made him look a undrafted rookie out there. I can't believe he gets rewarded with a contract extension after probably the worst game of his career.

There is no question that this move seems to reinforce the idea that the Bills are committed to mediocrity and do not give a rat's a$$ about winning or about the fans in WNY.

News flash Ralph, super bowl and play off teams have elite high paid talent and a bunch of moderately paid average roll players. I don't recall seeing a successful team model based on overpaid, average role players devoid of elite talent!!!!

After thinking about this, the only way I can rationalize the extension (and it makes very little sense, I know) is that they gave Chris Kelsay all of that $$$ as a F*** YOU to Aaron Schobel, who left the Bills and tried to milk more money out of the Texans. Schobel was by far the better player and knew he was the better player, so I can see him envying Kelsay's new contract. Of course, you don't run a business by making personnel moves in the interest of shoving those moves in former player's faces, so I really have no idea why this slow, non-instinctual, horrible DE/OLB, was re-signed.

Kelsay is the opidomy of the Bills is is exaclty why we suck. He ahs started for 8 years and should have been replaced 7 years ago. This guy blows and has never once resembled an NFL starter, even as a LDE. Now he is even worse. He hasnt even PRESSURED the QB once this season. He hasnt covered anyone in coverage. He is routinely out of position, never holds his contain, and is blocked too easily. I cannot think of one thing he is even average at. Not one. If not for Cornell Green he would be the worst starter on this team, and even still thats debateable.

These are the guys making between 5 and 6.5M total salary in 2009 at LB...there are 9 LBs that make above 6.5 last year total salary.

 

Just figured I'd post. Not entirely sure what Kelsays deal is ect...wonder where he'll be on this list next year the way it shakes down. A lot of moving pieces so this list isn't meant to mean anything necessarily...hoping you guys can help me make sense of it actually.

This is a depressing time to be a bills fan. I honestly think there is a possibility that we will go win less this year. Chris Kelsay, should have been cut or given a reduced salary. All three are better than Kelsay as a LB. I think you could even make an argument that Ellis and Torbor are better LB's than Kelsay. Hell I think Danny Batten is probably a better LB than Kelsay. I like what I have seen out of the front office so far, but I don't get this move at all. Hopefully, they know more than we do.

I think somebody in the contract negotiation office, with no ability to recognize football talent whatsoever, realized that because Kelsay is now an OLB and not a DE, that he could get him for "cheaper" and thus this was a frugal, timely move to save the team some money.

 

Like the cartoon clowns say in the Guinness ads, "BRILLIANT! <clink>"

Each of the last 3 Bills Front Office "regimes" are now responsible for prolonging the Chris Kelsay era:

 

-Donahoe drafted him high in the 2nd round

-Levy/Brandon/Overdorf gave him a giant raise and extension

-Nix now gives him a 2nd extension

 

I'm not sure why Ralph or anyone else that served continually at One Bills Drive during the past 8 years would have such a soft spot for Kelsay, but there's just no way he truly is a starting DE/OLB in this league worth that kind of money.

 

He's 30 years old and we're rebuilding? And Cornell Green's contract runs out when he's 37? Come on, now.

 

the constant over those regimes is Jim Overdorf--who has shown a strong habit for acquiring and overpaying slow, white defensive players
