Let's break it down a bit: "What are your thoughts" -- already way beyond his paygrade -- "on the philosophy of self-determination" -- again, why don't you ask your dog to expound upon the canine view of Anglo-American analytic philosophy or whether Heidegger's hermetic prose is actually meaningful? You have a better chance of getting an answer. "The idea that just government derives from consent of the governed" -- naturally, totalitarian dims think asking this question means you are a Nazi. assuming your interlocutor doesn't struggle with vocabulary beyond two syllable words, in which case they still pretty much default to making an accusation of racism.

Variant text of one of the more obscure versions of the Apocalypse -- somewhere in the middle after all the strange beasts make an appearance: "And there was the day Mr. Weo and Doc agreed. And God said, `Time to end this thing.`" -

2020 Election is officially Trump vs Biden
Dr. Who replied to transplantbillsfan's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
You are probably correct. The left has weaponized the tantrum. First it was sequential coup attempts, then it became the "peaceful protest." -

Folks on the Left can laugh at this all they like. They'll be boohooing and staring in shocked perplexity in November. -
Well, women generally.

Serial killers are fascinating. Ever wear a dogcollar? Love the Three Stooges.

So, Washington Smokescreen?

I think the logo is dignified and classic. But then again, I also think the Blackhawks have the coolest hockey sweaters.
-
I seem to remember seeing a vintage photo, not sure what decade, where the logo was an arrow.

It's alliterative, they could keep the logo. Warriors makes sense, imo.

John Wawrow reporting that one ought to cross Sabres off landing list for Dudley. The disappointment continues.

I would buy Buffalo Braves gear . . . -
Yep, the rugby fella, too.

This hire would instantly add credibility and markedly improve the perception folks have of the Pegulas. They could almost make it seem like they have a plan.

Donald Trump's Lonely Walk of Shame
Dr. Who replied to Warren Zevon's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
It was always more significant as a television show and imo Trump's long riff on media bias and the circumstances surrounding the speech and walk down the ramp at West Point was a brilliant, comic riposte to his many critics. Those who hate him will dismiss pretty much anything he does or says, but it was effective. Those who support Trump are just going to filter out the predictable Covid stories (why not the same treatment for "protestors" across the country gathered in close quarters or newly minted countries in the middle of Seattle?) -
I think you might be trying to assert an objective moral law --- you could assert this as a Kantian or follow the natural law tradition discoverable in Aquinas among others. I have a fair amount of sympathy for the natural law thesis, though there's no doubt that even if one grants it exists, it is not immediately self-evident and requires certain prerequisite beliefs as a foundation for it's rationality. (Granted, there are no ethics without at least an implicit metaphysics and first principles are not demonstrable, though one can intuit them.) C. S. Lewis wrote a book decades ago, The Abolition of Man, that argued for a perduring sense of morality transcendent of any particular culture. I think one can become so deracinated and cut off from communal relations that foundational experiences necessary to recognize an objective moral law are lacking. And, of course, in a meritricious, decadent society, sophists gain control of the modes of education and youth begin ignorant and end in entrenched ideology that blinds them to any substantial understanding of reality. Truth as transcendent purchase on an objectivity that cannot simply be written out of existence by human fiat is pretty much the opposite of cancel "culture."

Refreshing to read an intelligent, cogent expression from the "left." No one objects to reasonable debate with folks that can think and identify complexity, nuance, and strengths and weaknesses in both those they oppose and those they agree with. And how nice and humane to act as if we are members of a community and not alien tribes at war with one another.

Might as well look for the encouraging. He'll need a lot of help from his friends.
