Spotrac puts a "Market Value" on certain players. Either past stars or younger players that will have bigger potential. I looked at Harty a month ago when I perused the Saints UFA list. I did that because of the Saints horrible cap workings every year. They are always letting guys go that they can't keep. His "market value" from Spotrac is $8M per year. I see that too. He had 152 kick and punt returns. I would like to know how many fumbles were returns and how many on the field with the Offense.

I agree with your math and the deductions that Beane has to consider. One thing I notice every year. At cut down time when it goes from the 51 rule to the full cap there is always a few million that comes back in space when some of those rookies and below the 51 players end up replacing some of the guys with higher hits.

2 years is a long time ago in football. Us Bills fans have not had to concern ourselves the way Raven fans have during that time. Can you imagine this message board if the roles were reversed? I'm not anti-Lamar fan, but I truly believe that without an agent he has no knowledge of the effects this has on the Ravens organization. Not just the financing of his contract but the aftereffects he has created. Agents not only attempt to get what they can from the team, but they also know how to help the team in working through these huge contracts to keep the team competitive. The Bills had the opportunity to restructure Josh Allen's 1st true year of his contact yesterday to help the team. The Ravens are stuck with uncertainty and probably will have to live with Lamar's tag which can't be restructured.

Not sure what you mean about not playing out the rookie contract. Players sign "extensions" to their rookie contracts. Josh signed before his 4th season. Technically this is the first year of Josh Allen's 6-year extension.

Correct. That is why Josh and almost every franchise QB (not named Dak) gets signed just before their 4th season. One thing that is good about that is it helps the team with the contract dollars and signing bonus. That is when Lamar should have worked out a contract. His worth was at the highest then. The injuries have hurt his position now.

I do think a decent backup QB helps in camp and helps identify players to maybe keep in preseason games. Also, if Allen is out for the season I agree, but what about finishing a game where a QB goes down or for 1 or 2 during the season? I'm not advocating for a high $ backup, but I think the position has more to it than many fans believe.

I think the original round tender is a good move by Beane. He can let Dane see what he is worth and then Beane can match if he likes it. If some team throws some money at Dane (which is a possibility) Bills will get a 7th round pick. A 2nd round tender is $4.9M which is too much for Dane IMO.

Technically he can sign a multi-year contract for any amount of money BUT only after the original team waves the "tender" option. In essence he will be an UFA and can sign with the team for any terms after March 15th, but the original team could lose him to anyone.

Dane Jackson is a RFA. If the Bills do not "tender" him a contract, he becomes an UFA. Original round tender is $2.7M. The price cannot be lower. If a team offers him more, the Bills can match OR let him go and get a 7th round pick (his original draft round). Now, Dane could sign for lower with the Bills and give up his tender option (like Cam Lewis did) but Jackson thinks he is worth more. It's his right to do this. Personally, I think a team will offer a contract higher and he signs it.

If the Buffalo Bills would have signed Geno Smith as a backup in 2021 for $1.2M the vast majority of this board would have mocked OBD. What is showed to me is that a "bad" starter who has been in the league for some time can play good football. Rookies can be a "diamond in the rough" but I would rather have a guy who has started a number of games earlier in his career and now is willing to take the backup role for very reasonable money. Having that guy in your system and playing year after year in preseason games and at camp and practice only makes sense to me. Consistency with the backup will benefit everyone over changing them year after year. The Bills don't need an "older" mentor for Josh. Actually, they need a guy similar in age for JA to work with. An ideal guy would be someone who would play with similar traits as Josh. Drew Lock, Kyle Allen and there are others, should work out nicely.

I'm down with one of these 26- to 27-year-olds (there are a number of them) to sign to a 2–3-year contract. Get one who has started some games and try to develop him in the Bills system for a long-term backup. Minshew, Rypien, Lock, Mullens or Allen. They are at the junction of their careers knowing they have no real chance at starting. Get the guy whose head is now set on backup for a long time.

The money is part of it for me, but the bigger thing is the gameday roster limit. Typically, it hasn't hurt the Bills, but it did last year. This thread will be great to look at once the team gets filled out and ready for camp. Then a comparison can be made if anything has changed.

Good thread and great info @MJS. I too was going to bring up the Kumerow thing. I am not an anti-STer. I do think it will be pared back some this year. Lots against the Dirty Red re-sign, but not me. I also think Siran Neal will not make the 53 this year. Zayne Anderson will likely replace him for cheaper. Beane will keep a ST core, but I think they will also play a better role as depth.

I agree it was structured with that in mind. It is more of a risk after his injury. I for one will be very hopeful on his recovery!

I don't mind it at all. He is the captain of the STs and is pretty good at it. Having a couple of ST'ers is fine with me. It's the 5 or more that get me aggravated. I tend to agree with you, but it's done. He's a 4-year contract now. If his play falls way off Beane will just have to eat the money and move on. Cam Lewis is not costing cap space. He is no different than when the Bills sign a bunch of UDFAs after the draft.

They are going to have to take another $1.7M or so off when Phillips and Saffold's void years move to dead money and 2 low tier guys go on the 51. Good news Beane is under the cap and has some working capital. I could see another restructure for some smaller $s if he needs it.

Spotrac has the restructure $ in. Also already has the Hines and Settle redo's and Sam Martin. Bills now with $15M They have Milano still at $13M. But it will be $6M less.
