Your second point is dead on. As it turns out, that was the ball game. Inexcusable incompetence. Your takes on Josh and Zay are fair and accurate. Surprised you didn't also go after the O-line's poor pass blocking. In any case, another fine report.

You could also add that if McD hadn' t foolishly wasted timeouts, things would have been less desperate near the end and Barkley could have operated in a somewhat calmer manner. Or if Haus hadn't missed that FG, then the less-panicky goal would have been to play for the FG and take it to overtime.

Not perfect, just average as far as the O and ST are concerned. How does a supposedly on-the-rise, expecting-to-be-taken-seriously NFL team so horribly blow a punt? This isn't the Mountain West or a high school league, for crying out loud. And the pass blocking? Yeow. Zay watching interceptions like he bought a ticket? Lee Smith with FOUR stupid penalties? Add in JA's atrocious performance that reinforced every negative the non-WNY media and football "experts" have said about him forever. Throw in some of the coaching & the biased refs stuff and the wonder is the Bills didn't lose by 40 points. And they didn't because the D was magnificent. So, no, it didn't require anything close to near-perfection, just middle-of-the-road competence by ST and offense.

Overreact? It's impossible to overreact to what was an all-time awful performance by a Bills QB, ranking up there with Peterman against the Chargers. Even a reasonably mediocre NFL performance and the Bills win that game. Even with the awful refereeing and the blocked punt. It's not like it's his first NFL game, not like he's never done the same stupid, reckless things. To paraphrase Dennis Green, "He is who we were afraid he is." Unless you're blind from thick rose colored glasses, then you too have to be worried that he's not the long-awaited answer we all hoped he was.

It seems to me the three things the D must do are, in no particular order: 1- Completely take away the running game while 2 - Putting consistent pressure on the O line and forcing Brady to throw even quicker than usual, and 3 - Keeping receptions underneath so there are no long breakaways for TDs. If the Pats are forced to do their scoring from inside the redzone, I'll put my trust in the Bills D. And of course, do not so much as breathe on Tawmie, who will draw those penalties from his other teammates, the refs.

You may be right that Rodgers wanted to win with his arm, but to me a more plausible reason for not running while right on the goal line has to do with the Eagles Dline blowing up the Packs Oline all night long. Run Chubb 4 straight times? They couldn't get the run game going when the D had to defend the entire field and now you have them compressed into 10 yards? And even on those goal line passes, the Eagles were wrecking GB's Oline.

The article seems very well balanced. The Bills have been erratic and low scoring, have yet to put a full game together, and have had to come back from the edge twice in three games, and both times it was self-inflicted. And all three games were against mediocre teams. Until they can put a full four quarter game together and put up more points than they've been doing, and do it against good teams, I don't see how they can be regarded as anything but average. But I do think their trajectory is up and they will be well above average by the time Christmas rolls around. A win this Sunday will go a long way towards accelerating that.

Isn't it PFF whose new rankings have Mahomes as the 6th rated QB? When they can suit up an algorithm and put it out on the field, I'll start trusting stats over my eyeballs.
