What do we draft with a top 5 pick next year ?
Boatdrinks replied to QBorBust2018's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Gilmore started here for 5 years. Plenty of time to make an assessment of him. Pro bowls mean nothing, it’s mainly popularity. Playing in New England will get you noticed. Of those dbs you mentioned, I was most disappointed about Winfield. I felt he should have been resigned. I think Bradham was a LB ? Regardless , the Bills schizophrenic defensive schemes after multiple coaching changes dictated that some players would not be scheme fits. Say if Schwarz had been promoted to HC. Bradham was a good fit in that defense, not so much in Rex’s 3-4. If you’ve watched the NFL for any appreciable length of time, you’ll notice that no team keeps all it’s drafted players. Even good ones. That’s a result of the salary cap. While it’s true that the Bills had a philosophy regarding CBs for awhile, I don’t think the ideas of past GMs or Ralph Wilson’s bean counters have any effect on the team today. It was clear fo Romany years that they would draft a cornerback high every 4 years or so to have a talented , inexpensive player at that spot for awhile. CB salaries were going up, and they definitely had a dollar value placed on the position. It is now one of the top 3 or 4 positions by NFL salary rank, so this may still be a sound financial strategy for teams. Very few CBs are truly elite , and a Gilmore is not one of them. However , the FA system ensured he would likely get overpaid. In the end, you can’t pay everybody. Ralph Wilson is long gone, and so are his Detroit money men. Pegula is more than willing to pay out big bonuses etc. you can breathe easy as a Bills fan. As for the Whaley thing, that scenario you painted doesn’t seem likely. It wasn’t a snap decision. It was a smart one, though. He was in place and his team was compiling scouting reports. It was too late to change before that critical task was done. Once it was, there was plenty of time to implement a changeover. Marrone and Whaley famously butted heads, but Pegula wanted to extend Marrone. It was a rare opportunity to double dip on salary for DM after Ralph’s death, so he exercised the option in order to collect two HC salaries . Remember , he was reported to be the top choice for the NY Jets. He ended up bombing the interview. -
Hopefully WR, OL. No idea who, though.

RBs can be found anywhere , not sure what the relevance of Antowain Smith is . He was OK in Buffalo, but not great. The CB thing was a trend for a while , but I don’t think the McD pick of White was related to previous regimes. The team had a need at CB because Gilmore was good, but not great. He was in line for a big payday, and letting him walk was a smart move. He’s not elite. QB was an option, but I can understand not wanting a lame duck GM to select the QB for an incoming one. I’ll agree that many terrible moves were maid over the years due to Ralph’s tight purse strings and Detroit bean counters. Those days are gone, so there’s little relation. Look at NFL salaries. QBs are highest, followed by elite WRs, LTs , elite pass rushers and elite CBs. Paying a good CB as an elite one is a mistake. The Pats have won for years because of Brady. In Brady’s early years , they won with a dominant D. After Brady was established, they traded lots of very good D players instead of paying them. Paying a top RB isn’t even a thought. They don’t need it , and the game has changed in 17 years. The Bills haven’t won since they had a good starting QB. It won’t change until they do. As for the selection with a top 5 pick , it will probably be a pass rushing DL as it appears to be the strongest position in the draft. -
Whaley and crew did the scouting reports etc. The actual draft had a noticeably different “ feel” to it than previous Whaley drafts , however. It was widely speculated during the draft that McDermott was calling the shots and making the picks. It’s likely that T Pegs already decided Whaley was being let go and gave McD full reign over the draft process.

Yep, I think Dawkins is a more natural fit at RT.

Roster is set, pre-season over, how are you feeling?

It was nice to break the drought last year, because with this teardown/ rebuild we may have been flirting with twenty. This years team is in a sort of football purgatory ( no just QB purgatory lol . It’s a roster without a lot of high end talent. The offense is going to be among the worst in the league and the running game will take a big step back. -

Fair analysis. -
Streater doesn’t play teams though , does he ? A down the line WR has to play teams to have much value.
-
Peterman brings little in the way of NFL experience, though. Whenever Allen starts, he will have less time in the offense than NP. I’d start Peterman in the first few games while the O line situation gets sorted out. Unless Peterman looks like Joe Montana , there’s not much to be gained playing Peterman for very long.

Is Bryant subject to waivers ? I don’t think he would be but with suspension and all I’m not sure. He won’t come here on his own, most likely. -

I’d kick the tires. Bills were interested last year before Benjamin deal, anyway. -
So what exactly is your opinion ? That nothing will work and Beane will be fired ? Great hot take there, thanks for contributing to the board.
-
So you’d approve if they had drafted Rosen ? Just curious. I liked Rosen I’ll admit, but they clearly weren’t interested in him. They do have Darnold now. There are options ...

The Jets may have loved Mayfield for all we know. It was reported during the combine that the Bills had called teams ( including the Colts ) about moving up. The cost for the Bills to get in the top 3 was probably very high. Heck, 3 twos for what amounted to one spot was a high price. You could live with it though. The Jets FO was / is on the verge of being fired so little regards to the future was given. It didn’t involve first rounders, so was likely a palatable easy decision. You can firmly believe in whatever player you like , but that belief does not make it so. Regardless, what Beane and the Bills would have had to give up was probably far more than what the Jets did. It’s not an apples to apples comparison. So as Bills fans we hope it works out, or we can become Jets fans as their FO has been so brilliant.
-
Again, we don’t know who the pick would have been. The cost to move up that many picks would likely have been exorbitant as well, if available at all. Plenty of talented players have busted at the QB position , as well as others.
-
Another myth often cited as fact. Just what do you think the cost would have been to move up to 3 from outside the top 10 ? It wouldn’t have three 2nds. If anyone was even interested in dropping out of the top 10. We don’t know that Darnold will be any more “ franchise” than the other QBs. Or if he would have been ther choice. We can guess, but we don’t know. .

I don’t think they overestimated McCarron. There was NFL gamefilm on him. His injury didn’t help his cause, but I think he underperformed. The contract all but assured he wouldn’t be a QB 3. They know what they have in Peterman, barring anything wildly unforeseen. Peterman also has practice squad eligibility ( I believe ) so that would have been an option for him. The talent level is similar to a McCarron imo. Things probably went differently than they expected, or AJM would still be here regardless of the QB competition outcome. Allen as QB 3 would be a total waste of time. I’d say NP was about what they expected , but AJM was less than.

There is no way Mack on the 2018 Bills would have this team picking in the 20s next draft. Yep. A few more dead cap $ isn’t that big a deal in a year where the Bills already have the most anyway. Doesn’t affect 2019 or beyond, and the WR talent on this team is poor. It was worth the small price even if it didn’t pan out. -
There is no way Mack in 2018 is enough to get this team picking in the 20’s next year.
