AJ gone and no vet QB, are your expectations lower?
Boatdrinks replied to stuvian's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It’s a fair question. I had wondered what AJ ‘s potential was and have to say I expected him to win the job and be the opening day starter. After that, who knows ? While injury didn’t help, he failed to impress. My overall expectations weren’t very high once it was clear the Bills weren’t getting a Bradford type to start the season while a rookie was being groomed. I don’t think Peterman is anything more than a career backup, so overall my hopes have only been downgraded slightly. . Anything more than 5 wins would be a pleasant surprise to me. I wouldn’t bother. Season is in the schitter if you’re down to QB 3 anyway, so it may as well be a Logan Thomas or Braxton Miller type that can do something else. They might just grab a QB though, as it doesn’t seem like they’re going to find the OL or WR help that is desperately needed. -
True, and I agree. The thought of Mack on this D with the potential of Edmunds is pretty intriguing.

Judging Beane’s decisions so far
Boatdrinks replied to simpleman's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yep, this year is the painful one. Last year was a tear down with no expectations, surprisingly resulting in a playoff berth. That created new expectations, but this year is the “ cap purgatory” year resulting from jettisoning all that dead wood. Including an average to slightly above average QB that wasn’t good enough for “ the process”. The goal is being set higher than an odd playoff appearance here and there. This year is really about getting Allen some live game action and seeing if Peterman can be a long term backup while hopefully honing McDs defense. Next season the cap jail is over , quality FA can be added while using retained draft picks to find studs at cornerstone positions. It’s a tall order, but I’d rather see a swing for the fences than a team that can make a solid double now and then. -
3rd Super Bowl loss sends Tim McVeigh over the edge
Boatdrinks replied to NeckMeat182's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This is correct , NOV 1988 division clincher. -
He probably does. I’m hoping for a waiver wire claim at this point or even a trade. This WR group is among the worst the Bills have had since probably the Chan Gailey years.
-
How did he respond to the coaching / film grading that he would have received on those plays ? He has speed, and that can’t be coached. Other things can. Who should they have kept? There were overlapping skill sets and maybe guys who don’t play ST’s. There’s also familiarity with the staff. Anyway, we’re talkiing about a down the depth chart WR here. I don’t know if anyone other than Benjamin and Kerley ( who is a WR 3 anywhere else but a WR2 here) are much better. It came down to speed and other factors most likely.

He has speed, and must have a good attitude toward coaching. Maybe can play some on teams. Anyway, it says at least as much about Coleman as it does Foster.

I’m excited for Sunday and the return of Bills football and the NFL. It will be interesting to see what Daboll does. I’d say he decides to play small ball with Pats style concepts, healthy doses of McCoy ,a few low risk shots over the top off play action. I’m fully expecting a double shot of reality with this offense, followed with continuing struggles on D that we saw in preseason.

3rd Super Bowl loss sends Tim McVeigh over the edge

Man, how can you comment about the Bills or Buffalo’ s image on this board and still have sympathy for the victims and their families? Heck , even for the killer. He must have been mentally ill and somebody (else) should have noticed and did something about it. How could he have been allowed to rent that truck and buy fertilizer? How , how, how ....You must be a horrible person and should be publicly shamed! C’mon Freddy. How can your thoughts be about the Bills when reading this ? Horrible people on this board. For shame, for shame. ? Right. It was the Christmas Eve game vs Miami for the division , Reich started at QB -
I will be happy with a 2-2 start

Hmmm. I just don’t see it. Not a huge Cousins guy, but I see that MIN defense absolutely terrorizing the Bills sad sack offense. It’s a strong candidate for the Bills worst offensive outing of the year, a real “ set the DVR - watch a better game- skim through the post mortem “ type affair. -
Reports are that OAK strongly preferred sending Mack out of the AFC. Jets were very interested too. The deal would have had to be much sweeter than CHI offer to trade Mack in conference . This team isn’t just a player away, they’re in year 2 of a total teardown / rebuild.

2-2 with this schedule and our inexperience at QB plus OL issue ? I’d be over the moon about it, sign me up. -
What do we draft with a top 5 pick next year ?
Boatdrinks replied to QBorBust2018's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Gilmore started here for 5 years. Plenty of time to make an assessment of him. Pro bowls mean nothing, it’s mainly popularity. Playing in New England will get you noticed. Of those dbs you mentioned, I was most disappointed about Winfield. I felt he should have been resigned. I think Bradham was a LB ? Regardless , the Bills schizophrenic defensive schemes after multiple coaching changes dictated that some players would not be scheme fits. Say if Schwarz had been promoted to HC. Bradham was a good fit in that defense, not so much in Rex’s 3-4. If you’ve watched the NFL for any appreciable length of time, you’ll notice that no team keeps all it’s drafted players. Even good ones. That’s a result of the salary cap. While it’s true that the Bills had a philosophy regarding CBs for awhile, I don’t think the ideas of past GMs or Ralph Wilson’s bean counters have any effect on the team today. It was clear fo Romany years that they would draft a cornerback high every 4 years or so to have a talented , inexpensive player at that spot for awhile. CB salaries were going up, and they definitely had a dollar value placed on the position. It is now one of the top 3 or 4 positions by NFL salary rank, so this may still be a sound financial strategy for teams. Very few CBs are truly elite , and a Gilmore is not one of them. However , the FA system ensured he would likely get overpaid. In the end, you can’t pay everybody. Ralph Wilson is long gone, and so are his Detroit money men. Pegula is more than willing to pay out big bonuses etc. you can breathe easy as a Bills fan. As for the Whaley thing, that scenario you painted doesn’t seem likely. It wasn’t a snap decision. It was a smart one, though. He was in place and his team was compiling scouting reports. It was too late to change before that critical task was done. Once it was, there was plenty of time to implement a changeover. Marrone and Whaley famously butted heads, but Pegula wanted to extend Marrone. It was a rare opportunity to double dip on salary for DM after Ralph’s death, so he exercised the option in order to collect two HC salaries . Remember , he was reported to be the top choice for the NY Jets. He ended up bombing the interview. -
Hopefully WR, OL. No idea who, though.

RBs can be found anywhere , not sure what the relevance of Antowain Smith is . He was OK in Buffalo, but not great. The CB thing was a trend for a while , but I don’t think the McD pick of White was related to previous regimes. The team had a need at CB because Gilmore was good, but not great. He was in line for a big payday, and letting him walk was a smart move. He’s not elite. QB was an option, but I can understand not wanting a lame duck GM to select the QB for an incoming one. I’ll agree that many terrible moves were maid over the years due to Ralph’s tight purse strings and Detroit bean counters. Those days are gone, so there’s little relation. Look at NFL salaries. QBs are highest, followed by elite WRs, LTs , elite pass rushers and elite CBs. Paying a good CB as an elite one is a mistake. The Pats have won for years because of Brady. In Brady’s early years , they won with a dominant D. After Brady was established, they traded lots of very good D players instead of paying them. Paying a top RB isn’t even a thought. They don’t need it , and the game has changed in 17 years. The Bills haven’t won since they had a good starting QB. It won’t change until they do. As for the selection with a top 5 pick , it will probably be a pass rushing DL as it appears to be the strongest position in the draft.
