Fans always love to blame playcalling when the root causes of failure are poor execution due to lack of talent. Teams by and large run the same plays with different terminology. The Pats run variations of the same play out of various looks. You need good players for anything to work; the Bills offense presents very few matchup problems for a defense. As for how long before fans call for Daboll’s head ? I’d say halftime of game one.

Bills are playing a little "Rope A Dope" with the AFC
Boatdrinks replied to realtruelove's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Backing into the playoffs would be losing your last game and getting outside help to get in anyway. The Bills did their part and won their game as they needed to. I don’t believe there were any scenarios that would have gotten the Bills in if they lost. -

This is an oft- cited myth. The Bills only went winless in the preseason once in Marv Levy’s tenure , in 1990. -
Every Josh Allen snap in Bengals Preseason Game 3

I don’t expect they would show any kind of consistent scheme and put that on ps film. I agree with your overall assessment though. While a team can play well in preseason and have it mean squat in the regular season, it’s likely not good if you look terrible at just about everything. I know someone will bring up the 90’s Bills, but come on. Those teams had lots of talent and everyone knew it. It’s a bit harder to just say r-e-l-a-x about this squad. -
Hey, you can’t blame the owners for being good at making money.

Trouble is, Petermans best isn’t good enough to win many games . Even with a much better roster than exists here. Have to stick with the master plan, which means finding out if you drafted an elite QB. So there’s more to the decision than just who’s been the most consistent. They aren’t going to win many regardless of who starts. Why waste time with Peterman? I do see the logic behind starting him for a few games while this OL gets straightened out ( hopefully). They may not want to subject their investment to possible injury and set this thing back until next year.

Peterman Cumulative Preseason Stats
Boatdrinks replied to The Bills Blog's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Numbers aren’t the whole story. Is the goal to build a championship caliber team or to get by ? The franchise has been “ getting by” for all too long. Squeaking into the playoffs once every couple decades doesn’t cut it. We all see what Peterman does, but lets be honest. He doesn’t remind anyone of Jimmy Garropolo out there. If he did, the reaction would be far more enthusiastic. We’ve seen many of Petermans kind. I don’t blame Bills fans for being weary of watching these types of QBs play for their team. -

Could be. It’s acutally more likely than Allen not having enough on it to get it to the spot he wanted. -
O Line Troubles Start With It's Coach !!

We all know Castillo is mediocre to poor and is just a “ buddy “ hire. He also has little talent to work with on the OL. It’s a pretty bad combo all the way around. -

The ( surprising) underthrow to Clay is the only one I really can fault him for. The protection was mostly awful. Of course, Daboll could have had him go out and complete short quick passes a la Darnold. What would that have told them? This is when I remind myself that they were trying to evaluate something. Not scheming to negate a rush and win a preseason game. -
Block in the back still an issue
Boatdrinks replied to ALLEN1QB's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The old adage is “ if you can see the numbers on the back of his jersey don’t block him”. This has been an ongoing issue for decades, it seems . Not just with the Bills, either. I’d have to see some data to know if it’s committed more frequently now, or if it’s been consistent over time. -
Getting rid of the ball in a 3, 5 step quick passing game is not the same thing as a “ quick release”. Allen’s release is plenty quick. Why is it assumed that the Bills don’t think Allen can play a quick passing game? The types of passes they’ve called for Allen in the ps appeared to be designed to evaluate his AND the WRs big play potential. Daboll even asked him what kind of routes he wanted called in the CAR game. We know that the quick stuff is the only thing Peterman is capable of. So that’s what he’s been asked to do. Allen hasn’t played , and has a very capable arm. He doesn’t have any established “ game” to be assigned to him. Peterman’s “ game” is assigned to him by his physical limitations. Anyway, the best case to be made for Nate Peterman starting isn’t the style of offense, as I’d suspect they can run that style with Allen as well. Keeping Allen in one piece while they sort out this tire fire of an OL is the case. My bet is the Bills do this, and bring Allen in after the OL has taken on some sort of acceptable form.

What areas of the team has Beane actually improved?
Boatdrinks replied to Yeezus's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Can’t agree with this at all. The Bills would be significantly better off with Watkins at WR. He had 8 TDS last year ( most among Rams WRs) on just 70 targets. He’s clearly a #1, and was paid like it. He can only get open, he couldn’t make Goff throw him the ball. As you point out, he’s gone to a team with some other really good options for spreading the ball around. That’s what coaches like to do, and is the sign of a good offense. -
There’s no single “ right way” to handle a new QB. Many of those who started right away were #1 overall picks. Others didn’t have a good option in front of them. Many of those who were eased in did. Anyway, the Oline looks worse than I thought it would. That shot Allen took yesterday and the way he fell gives me great pause. A QB of lesser physical stature may have been knocked out of the game and possibly missed significant time. While I don’t feel playing behind that OL would stunt a QBs development or “ ruin” him, it sure as heck may get him injured. That would set the Allen timetable back in a big way. I’d start Peterman at this point.

OL what I would like to see happen TOMORROW
Boatdrinks replied to John from Riverside's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Agreed. Many OTs are too tall to be ideal at G. It’s a different build/ body type. -
He’s had his moments . Had bad ones too. Looks promising enough to be a possible starter at some point. Probably not 2018 though.

If peterman starts what’s the point of keeping AJ

He may have to eventually. This OL is putrid. -
5 biggest positional concerns for the starting 22
Boatdrinks replied to Mango's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Of course they hoped ( more likely expected ) that the line play would be improved. I’m certain they didn’t head in to the 3rd preseason game expecting the OL would get blown up. They had a whole week of practice to work on things. It’s probably a hard dose of reality for them right now that the OL problems were worse than they thought. Coaching staffs don’t sit idly by all week and expect to suck in the next outing. They work on the issues. In this evaluation based time of year, that means trying different line combos as well. I’m not following the logic of expecting a poor performance to follow up a previous one. That’s just not how NFL coaches think. -
5 biggest positional concerns for the starting 22
Boatdrinks replied to Mango's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don’t think it was planned. I do think they wanted to see Allen throwing intermediate to deep routes. Dabolls play calling when Allen was in there reflected this. The OL didn’t hold up as well as they’d hoped. They weren’t going to try to negate this rush by showing anything they have planned for the regular season. Aside from changing line combos, that is. I’d agree with your list of concerns by position, though. -
Is it possible we start 0-8?

Of course 0-8 is possible. I’d venture that 0-4 is probable. -

Hopefully just guys who won’t make the final 53 no cutting it on ST’s. I don’t know where the Bills stood relative to the rest of the league with these types of penalties last season.
