Football Outsiders Quick Reads on Josh Allen

Which I did not do. I've slammed those who have held on to their pre-draft notions despite actual NFL evidence to the contrary. -
PFF is awesome!

Football Outsiders Quick Reads on Josh Allen
eball replied to JESSEFEFFER's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
OF COURSE there was risk. Nobody is suggesting otherwise. The point is that for every negative brought up, one could pretty easily see an explanation. Bad footwork? Nobody showed him how to do it. Game processing? Not enough reps. He only really played for two seasons at Wyoming. Yes, he had coaches, but nobody can convince me he received good coaching in college. Anyway, it's all water under the bridge now. And yes, Kiper can rightfully claim he was on the Josh Allen bandwagon. It may wind up being the biggest feather in his cap ever. -

Football Outsiders Quick Reads on Josh Allen

I'm not critiquing their model for potentially "missing" on Josh Allen...I'm not even singling out FO. I think it's great they came out with a statement that recognized their model may have been way off with Josh. My point, I think, is that there are so many people who don't know a damn thing about analytics who took these pre-draft projections as gospel and keep hanging onto them as if the worst thing in the world is to accept that sometimes people break the mold. I saw a fantasy football guy on Twitter "critiquing" Josh's game against Miami because he threw a couple of "almost interceptions." That schitt doesn't happen to any other QB who has a game like that. Analytics are great; what's better is when they're not viewed as the be-all-end-all. I admit when I'm wrong all the time; just ask my wife. It's not a weakness. There were signs that Josh didn't "fit" into a typical analytics model. Most missed them. -
Football Outsiders Quick Reads on Josh Allen

You are proving my point. Nobody bothered to go beyond that to see if there are circumstances beyond the stats to explain things one way or the other. Now, admittedly, that process could be exhaustive if they did it for every prospect, but even a cursory look at Allen's background would have revealed a kid who was a "late bloomer" and didn't grow up playing QB. Who didn't know he had to send tapes to schools to get a look? This was an easy one. My arguments over the past two years have not been "black and white" -- they've looked for those exact nuances you are discussing. Your condescending tone attempting to paint me as a simpleton is misplaced. -
You know what I saw? Watch the replay from the end zone of the TD to Davis. I did not realize how GREAT of a throw that was. Dare I say, “elite.”

2017 and 2018 don’t mean a hill of beans at this point. Last season the Bills gave themselves a chance in every game except one (Philly). Yes, I’m hoping they finish the job more frequently starting this week.

Shh...Daboll doesn’t have a clue and is a terrible OC. That’s what I’ve heard repeatedly around here.

I have a question: what teams don’t struggle to beat good teams? I mean, if you don’t struggle to beat good teams you should be 16-0, right? The point being, as long as the Bills are putting themselves in a position to win against every opponent the “struggle to beat good teams” thing sounds pretty silly. The next step is to get over the hump against “good teams” more often than not.

Football Outsiders Quick Reads on Josh Allen

The problem is that NONE of these analytical projections of Josh as a pro bothered to look at WHY he had accuracy (read: completion %) issues at Wyoming. They simply said “he’s inaccurate” and rolled from there. What I and several others around here have been saying for the past two years is that there were very good reasons why Allen was not a polished product in college — he was light years behind the other QBs drafted in his year in terms of experience, reps, coaching, etc. But what he did have — freakish athletic ability and desire — were what those who liked him didn’t overlook. Beane and the Bills scouts deserve so much credit for believing that with the proper coaching and time Josh could become a very good pro. All we have seen from Josh is a consistent trajectory upwards, and I posted multiple times this summer that there was NO reason to believe that would not continue given his work ethic and the tools at his disposal. The people who are still clinging to their pre-draft analysis of Josh Allen are fools. -
And man, the silence from those around here who have trashed Josh from the get-go is deafening. Amazing how the negative ninnies who always pass themselves off as “realists” suddenly disappear when the team is doing well. Makes you stop and think...

Josh wins Week 2 Angry Run Award on GMFB

I have come to absolutely love GMFB. It's a part of my daily routine. They are all great, but Kyle and Kay are my favorites for sure. -
Adam Schein must have loved writing this

The passes don't throw themselves. That's all I have to say. -
I'm really enjoying seeing folks start to come around on Josh. We just need to be ready for the haters to come out in full force if/when he has an off day. All QBs have them, even the great ones.

Football Outsiders Quick Reads on Josh Allen

Thank you for posting this. PFF hires *anybody* to watch game tapes and assign arbitrary grades based upon what they see, with no knowledge of play call or contemplation of game situation. I know this because I actually "applied" to do this a few years ago on a lark as I thought it might be a fun hobby. There's no analytics going on. -
Damn straight. Two out of three knocked out of the park. And, you don't get it. Again. Everybody knows who the Bills "could have" had and my post acknowledges the Jones pick was a mistake.

Made a really nice TD catch for the Raiders last night. I didn’t watch much of the game but Zay is a good guy and it’s nice to see him have some success. Still consider that a pretty significant “miss” by McD (pre-Beane) in the 2nd round but crap happens. The Bills have moved on with a great WR corps and there’s no reason to hate on the guy.

Vikings fans already bemoaning the trade

All I can say is that it’s a damn shame Beane MORTGAGED THE FUTURE for Diggs. -
I find your logic paradoxically curious. Exactly how well do the Rams match up with the Bills' offense? They have two great players -- Donald and Ramsey -- and a bunch of "meh" otherwise. They have a first year DC. I have Rams fan friends, and they are anything but confident about this game. The one thing the Bills have going for them if Milano and Edmunds can't return is they now have game film to study and correct with the replacements. They also can scheme things a bit differently. The overall talent level between these two teams is either even, or slanted towards the Bills. McVay is the "sensitive genius" but I don't think you say the Rams are better coached overall than the Bills. This should be a tight game, but it's far from a "bad matchup" for the Bills.

They know each other beyond "on the field" -- a year or two ago they were playing together in a golf tournament w/ Darnold. It wouldn't surprise me if Fitz told him something like, "you keep that up, kid, and they'll build you a statue in Buffalo."
-
I really don't think you understand how this works. Who said to use Diggs as a decoy?
-
I’m already willing to admit it, I was wrong on Diggs
eball replied to DCofNC's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
But Beane MORTGAGED THE FUTURE for Diggs!!! Talk about an overused, typically misinformed take. Diggs has been everything we wanted and then some. -
I'll admit it is satisfying to know that what I saw with my own two eyes led me to the conclusion long before now that this is exactly the sort of QB we could have, and I didn't allow myself to be swayed by analytics nerds who don't factor in the totality of the circumstances when evaluating a college QB's performance and potential. Josh Allen went from a nobody in Wyoming to a top ten draft pick because of what he did in college, knowing that he had no specific QB upbringing or training to speak of but was gifted with freakish athletic ability and the work ethic and desire to be great. He was as raw as they come and was always going to need some time. I hope this is a ride we're on for the next 10-15 years.
