If The Bills are the Boston Celtics who are the Brooklyn Nets team that we can rip off for multiple premium 1st round picks for aging players towards the extreme back end of their careers? I think Holmes could have a nice year but I wouldn't count on it. Holmes is a good player to have as a 5th WR on the roster. Lots of potential physically, he is willing to play special teams and is productive on that end. Could step up if there is an injury too. But right now I can't say with any confidence he is going to be a player for the team. I honestly would love to see the Bills trade a late round pick for Seth Roberts from Oakland if Roberts falls out with the acquisitions they made there. Roberts is a nice player and with Cooper, Jordy, and Bryant there now he could be an odd man out.
-
What is odd is that Zay was considered to be a high character guy coming out of college. Maybe he used drugs to cope with having a lot of pressure on him this past season. I hope that he has a nice bounce-back year, mental issues are something a young player can work through. Once again I would like to see them try and get another proven veteran to compete for a top spot but outside of Dez the market is very slim and I don't see Dez coming here at a price that would make sense.
-
I think the Bills should sign a veteran LB, there are a few out on the market that would make sense. Even with Edumonds the team still needs another LB plus some depth. I wouldn't hate kicking the tires on 2 vet LB's in camp just to see what they have and to mentor the younger players.
-
I felt like a lot of Zay's mistakes last season were mental. I think he can get over them and be a productive slot player but even if you feel like Zay Jones is going to have a rebound year the Bills WR core is still a mess and could certainly use an upgrade. Dez I think would represent an upgrade talent wise. But he could be a problem child and cost way too much. I Don't see it happening with Dez not because they are uber confident in Zay but mainly because I think the cost vs risk isn't worth it.
-
If the Bills had a pretty decent QB situation I wouldn't be shocked to see Dez consider playing here. But with AJ and Allen as the QB's and a less than high-end market I just can't see Dez coming here. I think the Bills would really help their WR situation if they got Dez on a 1 year deal. Dez at this stage of his career isn't setting the world on fire but he can be a competent number 2. The WR core with Kelvin-Dez-Zay isn't bad.

Combing through the negative Josh Allen Grades/Reviews
billsfan89 replied to BigDingus's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You can get really down on a QB prospect if you want to and you can make a prospect seem way better than he is if you want to. Allen is a tantalizing QB prospect for various reasons but he is also a risky QB prospect for various reasons. Allen has all the physical tools you want in a QB. He is tall, built like a tank, and Allen has maybe the strongest arm in recent memory. On top of that Allen has the work ethic, intelligence, and by all accounts the leadership intangibles. But Allen has accuracy issues and smaller issues with footwork and reading a defense. But a lot of people have observed that a lot of Allen's accuracy numbers may have been deflated for various reasons and that Allen's bad footwork and reading of defenses are more a result of offensive line issues he had to play through in college. I didn't like the pick and I would have went with Rosen, but McBeane as a regime isn't afraid to take risks. They saw Allen as the higher potential player and they went with him. It wasn't the move I would have done but these coaches and scouts know these prospects and that was the call they made. They want the guy they think can be a star QB and were willing to take on the risk. -
RD 5, Pick 166: Wyatt Teller G - Viginia Tech

I wonder why he was graded out as a 5th round prospect. Seems like he was a pretty dominant college player and he has all the measurables and attributes. Seems like he should have been a 3rd round pick or higher. -
Sadly he might have been a one year wonder in college. Killer junior season OK frosh and sophomore seasons. A lot of people loved the pick at the time I did too. I think Shaq can develop into a pretty solid player from what I saw last year he plays strong against the run and he is young enough to improve as a pass rusher.
-
The plan with the pass rush is volume, Shaq will get the chance to be a starter but so will other players. I think the Bills hope that 2 out of the 5 players they have on the roster will pan out. Hughes, Lorax, Shaq, Murphy, and the kid they brought in from the Giants. All 5 players have the potential to turn in a productive season but all of them also have issues that should be concerning. Hughes - Not coming off of a productive season and a bit older Lorax - Played out of position last season showed promise at DE in the last few games but also really old Shaq - Played OK until he got hurt (set the edge against the run but didn't set the world on fire as a pass rusher) Murphy - Coming off of a serious injury The rest of the players on the roster at DE don't have much experience so I think the Bills are just scratching a bunch of lottery tickets at this point and hoping 2 or so have a good season. Personally I have good feeling about Lorax and Shaq. I think Hughes is shot but I hope I am wrong. Murphy I think will be a nice rotational player.
-
Fair enough, but I think we can agree that we hope Allen is as good as his potential. Allen's biggest issue in my mind is can he refine his footwork and will that improve his accuracy? Improved footwork can help a QB become more accurate but is that enough to make Allen have the touch and accuracy needed to be a successful pro QB. I think Allen is smart enough to develop his decision making and reading of defenses. But accuracy is something that is hard to improve significantly. Are those other factors regarding Allen's accuracy true (structure of the offense, bad O-line play, and a general lack of talent around him) or is Allen just another Kyle Boller, rocket arm but not accurate enough.
-
It could be possible that's a comparison that a lot of people are making but I just don't see it. Other than their size and stature combined with a big arm they aren't that alike. Big Ben is a better comparison for Allen in my opinion.
-
You are correct 4.41 for RGIII. I think the comparisons to Cam are just a bit of a stretch and are only made because of McD's connections to the team Cam Newton plays for. Allen and Newton are both big dudes with rocket arms but beyond that they aren't the most comparable players.
-
Physically they are a bit far apart from each other but it isn't massive (one has a bigger arm and better intangibles the other is faster and has fewer issues with accuracy.) But Cam's college resume is so far ahead of Allen's. Cam's senior year was not only beastly, but it was against the best competition college football could offer. Allen was a pretty good but not dominant QB in a so so conference. People projected Allen as a top 10 or even top 5 pick because of his insane arm, physical profile (big dude and big hands) and for the fact that Allen is by all accounts has the intangibles. A lot of scouts also weren't scared off by his low completion percentage because of context (Type of offense he played in was more downfield throwing, his WR's weren't the best, and his O-line play was poor.) But Allen is by far the more raw prospect than Cam was. Allen is the NBA prospect you draft because of how athletic he is despite not having dominance at the college level while Cam is the type of prospect you draft because he was athletic and dominant at the college level. Cam's last college seasons was one of the best of all time and he had the insane physical tools. Watching Cam coming out of college that year he looked like a man among boys and his professional success proved that.
-
Cam also had a 40 time of 4.59 while Allen had a 40 time of 4.75. Allen's 40 for a QB isn't too shabby but Cam's is pretty dam insane considering his size (For reference much smaller QB's like Michael Vick ran a 4.25 40 and RGIII ran a 4.1 40.) Cam Newton was not only a more successful college player against better competition but Cam also possessed better physical skills outside of maybe raw arm strength. That's not to **** on Allen, Allen has maybe the most insane rocket arm ever and is right out of central casting for a QB. Allen by all accounts is a hard worker and a good leader. But he just isn't the same physical freak as Cam and Cam also had a much better college resume.
-
I like Darnold as a QB but it is weird how no USC QB besides Carson Palmer has had a lot of success at the NFL level and even Palmer wasn't a resounding hall of fame player (1 career playoff win although certainly some good seasons throughout his career.) Each player is their own and if I were the Jets I wouldn't start him at all this season. Have him learn for a year maybe toss him in for 2-4 games at the back end of the season. Then I would spend a bunch of money and draft picks to build up the talent around him. Similar to what I want the Bills to do with Allen.
-
Rosen doesn't have many issues with his play, he isn't the most mobile but he isn't a statue in the pocket either. But as a pocket passer, he shows almost everything you would want. He is smart, knows how to execute an offense, he doesn't have a legendary arm like Allen but he has a dam good arm and is accurate. Rosen also has very good fundamentals only some small issues with footwork. The 2 significant knocks on Rosen have always been durability (a Significant injury ended his 2016 season and he had a concussion in 2017 and there might have been some other concussions) which is a legitimate concern and Rosen seems to be viewed as a combustible personality. I think teams view Rosen as a Jay Cutler type, but that to me isn't fair since Cutler lacked a lot of energy and failed to galvanize teammates a lot of the time. Rosen is very fiery and passionate but he could be much more self-serving and loose-lipped which coaches don't like. All things considered, I would have taken Rosen, I think the knocks of being too smart and coming from an entitled family are dumb, durability and general personality concerns are a lot to consider but I think Allen's possible accuracy issues and the work he needs on his fundamentals are larger issues.

If AJ McCarron plays great
billsfan89 replied to Kingston Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Hypothetically if AJ is a lights out franchise QB and Allen doesn't see the field the Bills will be able to at the very least recoup a mid first round pick plus other considerations for Allen. I wouldn't worry about it. -
Harrison Phillips will be a BEAST!
billsfan89 replied to HoserE's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I love this pick, wasn't on my radar in the pre-draft process but looking into his profile I loved it and his disposition since being drafted has been fantastic. -
I think it is fair to question her credentials because of her close relationship with Terry. She didn't build the business together with Terry, Terry worked for Getty Oil and then founded his first company in 1983. Terry's business was pretty well established and successful by the time he met Kim. Kim since the age of 22 has only worked for entities owned by Terry. If your husband is the owner of where you work it is possible that you won't get held to the same standard as an ordinary worker. I am not saying that she did or didn't but rather that it isn't out of the realm of possibility. I think it's also fair to question Kim's credentials because we don't know what her positions within Terry's various companies were. We don't know the scope of what she has managed and how successful she has managed them. It could be she is really involved and very good at what she has worked on. But it could also be that she has never really managed a large division and resources either.

Why the Allen project may be different
billsfan89 replied to Batman1876's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I would also add that Allen's lack of accuracy in college is not necessarily reflective of his touch or ability accuracy wise. His bad footwork developed in part because of terrible offensive line play (hard to have good footwork if you are consistently under pressure.) The offense he played in was a downfield throwing offense that didn't have as many high percentage throws as a lot of other offenses, not to mention that Allen's receivers weren't the best. If Allen is benched most of his rookie year he can develop his footwork decently before getting called into action, and if the O-line play in front of him improves (which in 2019 they can improve the o-line a lot lots of salary cap space and a draft class) he stands a chance of having much better footwork. Also, the offense will have more short throws and hopefully better WR's. I think that these factors are why teams fell in love with Allen so much during the process. The dude is straight out of central casting for a QB. 6 foot 5, 240 pounds, best arm strength most have seen or close to it, smart and a great leader the only issue is questions about accuracy which might have plausible explanations. -
What do you think of my new kick off idea?
billsfan89 replied to Steptide's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think it was Greg Schiano when he was with the Bucs that had an idea I think would work much better. After a team scores a TD or gets a Field goal place the ball on the 35 yard line and make it a 4th and 15 or 20 and the team that scored possesses the ball and has the option to punt or go for it (Instead of an onside kick.) Less injuries on punts than kickoffs and it still keeps the integrity of the game as it isn't nearly as gimmicky being a down and distance type thing. You pretty much would never see a kickoff in bounds unless a team went for an onsides kick. -
From what I have read she just worked in Terry's business form 1991 to 2010 when it was sold. I would imagine being married to the owner of the business she had a pretty high up position in the business but who knows if she was actually doing something where she was managing a lot of people and resources? It also is questionable as to what her results are as a manager since we have no idea how she did as an executive. As an interim president, I think she will be fine. Beane has a good handle on the football operations so she basically is just going to handle the marketing and business ops.

RD 4, Pick 121: Taron Johnson DB - Weber State
billsfan89 replied to Reed83HOF's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The Bills needed a nickel CB so I don't hate the pick, but I would have went with O-line, the team's big trade ups were going to lead to a roster that was compromised in certain areas. Hopefully for Buffalo they can find some veteran players to fill those needs. -
In the mid to late rounds you have to just acquire the most talented players on the board. That's how you build the best team. A 4th to 7th round pick isn't likely to come in and start so reaching for a need is useless. Just take the best players on the board at that point. That's how you build a deep roster. Hopefully one of the top 3 players on your board fit a need but you shouldn't reach at all at this point in the draft.

RD3, Pick 96: Harrison Phillips DT - Stanford
billsfan89 replied to Reed83HOF's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Kelsay was a good role player, a good 3rd DE rotational type player. The hate from fans seems to stem from the fact that he got overpaid by the Bills twice for some reason. The Bills weren't getting zero production out of him but rather they weren't getting anywhere close to the production needed considering his salary.
