Report: 24 yr old LB Zach Orr to come out of retirement
billsfan89 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think he might be swayed by money more than anything else. He hasn't had a big contract and his medical condition would more than likely have him chasing as much money as possible. So I think he could be had if the price was right. The defense could use an upgrade at LB and the scheme values linebackers. I wouldn't hate the move at all. -
I like the type of coach McDermott is esp after a players coach like Rex. McDermott isn't a prototypical disciplinarian that a lot of teams bring in once a players coach loses a locker room. He seems to me to be someone who demands a level of professionalism and intensity through his actions and the manner to which he carries himself. Not sure if he will work out but the philsophy he brings is the kind the team needs. A much more traditional disciplinarian type coach isn't nearly as effective in the NFL as they use to be.

Raiders sign Carr to 5 year/125 mill extension
billsfan89 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Next good QB up the next biggest contract handed out. Carr might not be as proven as other QB's but he had an impressive rookie year, a breakout second year (Just under 4k yards, 32 TD's and 12 INT's), and then a slightly better third year statically with just under 4k yards, 28 TD's to 6 INT's and all that in 15 games, and he led the Raiders to a 12-4 regular season record a huge improvement from the 7-9 season they had the year before. Only major negative is after 3 impressive seasons he broke his leg. But since he is on the last year of his deal (which was only 4 years because he was just a second round pick) the Raiders are playing it safe rather than risk upsetting a franchise QB by having to franchise him. Carr being under contract also gives them the benefit of freeing up their franchise tag to use to retain another player. So if someone unexpected has a great year they have the option to keep him. I think the Raiders were looking to avoid a Kick Cousins type of situation where things can get very contentious between a player and a franchise over contract negotiations. Carr would deserve the franchise QB treatment if he didn't break his leg, but in the modern era that's the kind of concessions you will have to make. -
Kujo was a bust as a right tackle but when he had to fill in at left tackle he was actually pretty competent. I was surprised they wouldn't have tried to kick the tires on him during training camp, he could position himself into a backup role.. But I guess a behavioral slip up and a decent amount of depth at tackle (Mills returns, Dawkins was a high draft pick, and Sentral Henderson could be an intriguing option, they also added Vlad Ducasse who could swing out to tackle. I think had maybe Cyrus been decent at RT he might have gotten the starting job designed for him when he was drafted or he might have had at least as shot to be a swing tackle off the bench. But he was just too bad at RT and not outstanding enough in limited play at LT. Not a huge loss but an interesting cut as I could see him having some success in Detroit.

Outside of Watkins and Jones there isn't a lot that inspires me at the WR position. Andre Holmes is the only decent player after Watkins and Jones and I see him more in the Justin Hunter red zone role. So if the team took a flyer on Decker I wouldn't mind it, any attempt to upgrade the reviving corps is welcomed by me.

Jeremy Maclin (Agrees to 2 year deal with Ravens)
billsfan89 replied to BillsDiehard's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Had a really good first year in KC over 1000 yards and 8 TD's in 15 games. Really added a lot of punch to their offense that first year, and considering he hauled in 8 TD's the year after KC had no receivers catch a TD showed just how much he improved their receiving output. Jeremy Maclin had a really down year in 2016. He missed 4 games and only had 536 yards and 2 TD's. Overall I wouldn't be opposed to bringing him in as he is still somewhat young having just turned 29 and he isn't far removed from productive seasons. But I am not sure how much of an impact he would have. -
Rumor- Bills will entertain trade offers for Watkins?
billsfan89 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't really buy this rumor, it is too much a sell low situation. Watkins is coming off his worst year and back to back season where he was banged up. It would be a waste to pawn him off when he might not even net a pick in the first three rounds. The Bills can control Sammy after this upcoming season with the franchise tag so it isn't a case of "Getting Value" from him on the last year of his deal. -
Bad omen but nothing more than a minor injury 2 months before training camp. Kid is young and has time to rest it up and be 100%.

Nice Rumblings writeup on Kevon Seymour
billsfan89 replied to thunderingsquid's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
As much as I wish they kept Roby as the dime back (Good depth and role player in my opinion) the fact that they let him go when he was on a modest contract shows just how much they liked what they had in Seymour. The coaching staff has a lot of confidence in Seymour and to me when you are a new coaching staff and you are high on a player drafted low from a previous administration it must mean your confidence in him is very legitimate. -
If he is still an effective player they will at worst do a restructure of his deal. I think Shady has one more good 1000 yard season in the tank at age 29 at best maybe he turns in a solid 2018 at age 30 but 30 is a problematic number for RB's esp guys like Shady who will be on his 10th season after this up coming year. But if the Bills manage to get one more elite year out of Shady I will consider that a success overall even if he falls off in 2018. It is odd to think that McCoy if he rushes for 1044 yards he will hit the 10,000 yard mark he would be the 30th player to do so (Unless Forte or Chris Johnson get there before him). And considering that he would have done it in 9 seasons that's not someone compiling through attrition. Crazy to think that he is knocking on such a milestone. It doesn't feel like he has been in the league as long as he has. In fact McCoy is 5th among active running backs in career rushing yards behind Frank Gore and AP (Both of whom are above the 10k mark) and behind Chris Johnson and Matt Forte who are both close to the 10k mark. Considering CJ 2k will be 32 during the season, is coming off an injury, and is currently without a team I doubt he gets the 500 yards he needs. Forte will also turn 32 but only needs under 600 yards and is currently on the Jets and is in line to get legit playing time so it will depend on a lot of things for him but he has a shot at it.

If Bills Don't Get A Franchise QB In 2018
billsfan89 replied to BuffaloBaumer's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The Bills could easily have two top 10 picks next year who the !@#$ knows how both the Bills and Chiefs seasons will pan out. But I don't think the Bills are in a bad spot with Tyrod. Even if you assume Tyrod is about what he is (I think he stands to maybe be a bit better with some more experience and a better system but he isn't far off from what he can be optimistically) he is still a QB you can win with. For once in a long time the Bills need a QB but aren't desperate for one. They have two young developmental QB's on the roster and they have two first round picks next year if they target a QB next year. I think when you aren't desperate for a QB that's when things tend to happen better for your franchise. Hopefully Tyrod takes a step up and the Bills aren't forced into needing a QB badly over the next few years. -
Give me White and the picks as well. Not even close, although Latimore would have been the pick I would have made at 10 it was clear that the Bills had a ton of needs to address and that this was a deep class at corner where the drop off between Latimore and a DB take later in round 1 was not that huge as it would normally be.

Lorenzo Alexander makes top 100 players of 2016
billsfan89 replied to JerseyBills's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Lorax had a killer 2016 glad to see him get some recognition. Not sure who else from the team will make it to the top 100 outside of Shady I don't think there are any locks. Maybe Incog or Glenn from the O-line or Dareus. Dareus certainly has the talent and reputation but he is coming off a year where he was suspended and hurt for parts of the year and he wasn't dominant when he was in there. Not sure if an O-line representative will make it in there either. Shady will but it will be interesting to see if someone else gets in there. -
Best available veteran FA's that might fit for Bills
billsfan89 replied to BeastMode54's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Byrd and Barnidge to me seem like they would be great fits. Barnidge gives some depth at tightend and overall at the skill positions a place where the team has very little depth. Byrd could push for a starting safety spot and at worst add some depth. Just my amateur opinion of course but I thought both Byrd and Barnidge were pretty productive last year. Byrd was healthy last year with the Saints and according to PFF and a lot of other advanced metrics had a improved 2016 up from his abysmal prior two seasons. I think a change of scenery with him might work out. As far as Barnidge he caught 55 balls 600 plus yards with an abysmal QB situation and not much help outside of Terrell Pryor from the other skill positions. I think you can get a good year out of Barnidge and Byrd at least one of them. -
The new regime made a choice at the beginning of the off-season to restructure Tyrod which means that even if Tyrod wasn't a QB they brought in he is a guy they made an affirmative choice on early in the off-season. They aren't trading him this late in the game nor should they. The Bills do not have a better option at starting QB and you could do a lot worse than Tyrod at QB.

Gary Barnidge visited the Bills May 3rd
billsfan89 replied to CNY315's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I would love this signing. He had a great 2015 with 1000 yards and 9 TD's. Even though he came back to Earth in 2016 he was still dam productive with 55 catches and around 600 yards if I am not mistaken. Grabbing him would allow the Bills to run more two TE sets and have a viable backup for Clay. Having a second capable TE would also allow the Bills to mask a weakness on their offense as it would allow the team to use less receivers a position the team is not very deep at. -
The Pegulas flushed 35 million down the toilet
billsfan89 replied to Estelle Getty's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Plus too I am sure they have write offs that can offset parts of those salary commitments. On top of that the Bills and Sabers are toys for them. They really are just putting money into something for fun as opposed to running it like a traditional business. -
Bills Decline 5th Year Option on Sammy Watkins
billsfan89 replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Makes sense since I don't see any major free agents on the Bills roster. Preston Brown and Cyrus are the only other significant expiring contracts on the Bills roster and neither one are can't lose players and both seem to be players that could be resigned if the Bills need them to. So if Sammy goes off and has a career year they can franchise him and work out a long term deal. Whereas if they picked up his option and Sammy gets another major injury the Bills will be locked into 13 million for Sammy with zero flexibility. -
Let's be honest it is also about having the right environment to develop a QB. Prescott and Russell Wilson were drafted to pretty stacked teams that were able to play to their strenghts and mask their weaknesses. Prescott was gifted a great O-line, a beastly running back, and a defense that had a great year, his rookie year success could come down. Russell Wilson was drafted to a team that had a very good O-line at that time, a Hall of Fame running back in Lynch, and an all time great defense. Wilson has since matured into a great player as ironically the talent around him has dipped he has gotten better as a player. Derek Carr was the only player drafted into a **** situation that turned it around and developed into a very good player with a lot of potential. So I am curious how much of it is the player and how much of it is the situation. Would Big Ben been a great player had he been drafted by the Bills? I don't know if he would have developed into the same player honestly. I hope that the Bills do turn it around as an organization. I think Tyrod can be a QB that gets you to the playoffs but I am not sure how much he elevates a offenses talent. Honestly it might be a combination of right player, right place, right time in a lot of circumstances which is why finding QB's is so hard.
-
That's more of a 70 yard pass and he got a hell of a running start. Not saying it isn't impressive but it's unlikely that he is going to be able to do that in games since the conditions that he threw that pass in are unlikely to manifest themselves in a game. JaMarcus Russell had a monster arm that a lot of pundits said was as strong as any QB ever and a lot of QB's can throw the ball huge distances but having a cannon arm is only one aspect of being a QB. Mahomes could be a great QB he certainly is in the right situation in KC where he can sit behind Alex Smith for a season or two but he also was riddled with question marks and has a lot of issues which made him a less than appealing prospect that fell to pick 10 despite being in a premium position in the league. Time will tell but I liked what the Bills got.

RD 2, Pick 63: Dion Dawkins (OT) - TEM
billsfan89 replied to SDS's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
In my mind the Bills came in with the following needs. CB 2 Nickel CB WR 2 WR 3 OLB RT Safety The Bills first three picks are looking to fill needs at RT, CB2, and WR2. Not only did the Bills get those three positions of need but they also added an extra 1st round pick next year. Even though they only have a handful of picks remaining I think the team in terms of philsophy, player value relative to perception, and setting themselves up for the future did a great job in this draft. They got 3 players at fairly good value in 3 positions of significant need all while pocketing a future 1st round pick. Now who knows how these three players will actually play and how much they can and will contribute for this upcoming season. But it is clear that the people doing the drafting know where the weaknesses on the roster are and brought in players to sure up those weaknesses while not really reaching. -
Browns release TE Gary Barnidge
billsfan89 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Would be a very good pickup for the Bills, not just because he was a diamond in the rough for my 2015 fantasy team but because the Bills need a quality second tight end and Barnidge is a pretty good option in my mind. He had a 1000 yard 9 TD performance in 2015 which was an insane year. But even though in 2016 he came down to Earth he still put up more than serviceable numbers for an abysmal Browns team with a pathetic QB situation. 55 catches and 600 plus yards on that team in that situation is pretty good. He had better numbers than Clay had last year if you want to put it into context. Barnidge and Clay would make a formidable combo that would take a lot of pressure off of the thin WR core and sure up depth at a position the Bills have very little at. -
Yeah the turnover since 2014 has been huge, there isn't much reason to think that the defense will resemble 2014. But hopefully the D-line and the newer additions step up. Dareus, Hughes, Kyle, Shaq, Washington, and company could make for a very deep formidable unit. If Brown can find a way to return to being a capable starter and Lorax and Ragland fit well in the scheme then I don't see why the LB core won't be productive. The Secondary is a bit of a question mark even with White being added. Darby, Hyde, and now White are the only 3 that you can have confidence in and 1 is a rookie. If Seymour and the other less known players can contribute then the defense stands a chance. I suspect one of those third round picks will be invested into the secondary if not both 3rd rounders.

Your Favorite Targets @ 44 Tomorrow ?
billsfan89 replied to Jamie Muellers Ghost's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
WR or Safety makes the most sense from a need perspective. I think the Bills can find a LB in round 3. Even with White added the secondary could still use another player.
