Does there need to be a rethinking of the basic D?
YattaOkasan replied to oldmanfan's topic in The Stadium Wall
Agree, i would also ask posters which tape do other teams are gonna use to scout. This preseason or last year? Of course the Ravens are gonna try to run it down our throats. Its what they do and we struggled against it last year. None of the preseason matters except for talent evaluation. Im not thrilled so many players aint living up to the test, but most of them are not going to be playing. -
Coach Tuesday started following Early returns on 2024 Draft is awful

Dewayne Carter played deep into the game last night. Now, it's possible they're just testing him at both interior DL spots and wanted to get extended looks at that, but it's also possible his job is in jeopardy. He'd probably be a trade candidate as opposed to an outright release, but it's clear he has a lot of work to do to carve out a regular role for himself on this team.

Personally, I am hoping they all install the arm wrestling machine stallone had in his rig in over the top. This way they can workout on the way to the stadium too. mostly it is very important to remember the immortal words of bull harvey, -
Preseason Week 2 Bills at Bears - Game thread

Did Darrick Forrest play? He seems to be going the way of Mike Edwards from last year…. It’s so weird our safeties seem to stink, but when we bring in some FA competition (albeit mediocre), the FA’s don’t really get ever heard from. -
Don't know for sure but my guess is that Moore makes the roster. Shavers looks like he has earned his spot. Shavers would have no problem making many NFL rosters if there was more explosion to his game. His routes appear to have been solid though albeit generally against second and third tier defenders.
-
I think it would be smart to keep some young guys. Certainly Shavers has shown Moore and Sander and he also fits a type that would add diversity to the receiving corps. They could use a big guy with speed. Use Hamler to fill in the quick small slot guy spot. Several have pointed out that it doesn't make cap sense to cut Sanders, but why not put him on IR? Doesn't help financially to cut him anyway, just need to open up the roster spot. Give him one of the IR to return slots and that way he is also held in reserve if he is finally healthy and if the young guys don't work out. Oh...but we'd have to make sure he is injured at cut down day in order to put him on IR. Let me check...does cut down happen on a day that ends in "d-a-y"? Okay...we good.

Shavers and Hancock are the preseason performers. Shavers should make the team. Hancock looks like a guy who will be on the field sooner than later. One thing about it this game exposed a lot of bubble guys as frauds. No way Codgrington makes the team. Andresson is a liability in coverage. Dane Jackson is slightly worst than I remember. Zack Davidson will never be more than a guy who pops in the spring. Elijah Moore needs to hope Samuel stays off the field. Can Buffalo finally draft a back up qb with some potential? Trubisky and White are not fun to watch play football.

To those freaking out a little...think of who the Buffalo Bills play in their first game? Ohhh the 2024, 12-5 Baltimore Ravens that were 1st in the AFC North and top ten in both offense and defense. Their offense was #3 in points scored and #1 in yards. Now, if you were McD would you want to show the Ravens anything when they watch the film of the Bills 2025 preseason games...(which btw are meaningless)? If the Ravens coaches / players watch the games so far they will be thinking that they don't even need to show up and its a win for them. They will have some serious revenge on their minds for the playoff loss last season and it will be a tough game. -

We dont know what they do well cause they havent played a real game yet. We have turned over large parts of this defense and I expect more churn through the season. We have proven players at almost every position except S and DT. If were just off last season and we say what does this defense do thats good, the answer is take the ball away. -

I need to be talked off the ledge a bit. I just can't think of a legit SB team with a deep secondary as weak as ours. We all know Josh can get us to the brink with offense.. but when you play the other elite AFC team(s) at the end of January, the D comes up small. Teams can throw on us and convert 3rd downs at a good clip. -
Its pretty early to be declaring it a bad draft. Bishop who everyone is flipping out about because he got beat playing a wr man to man a t the line of scrimmage played 1 and a half series last night. Sederick Van Pran Granger's injury is a bummer this summer and the fact that he probably won't play at all this year stinks but he is a player that seemingly will be a starter at some point or given the opportunity to be a starter. They like grable and he seems like another guy that is being developed. Ray Davis proved who he was last year. He is the perfect number 2 back. Carter is the one who is the most dissapointing to me. He played in a similar system in collge and played the 1, 3 and 5 technique at end in college. I thought he would at least be able to stand in there and play the run well even if he had no pass rush ability. He has struggled this summer it seems and yesterday he looked exhausted in the second half of the game. Im curious how many snaps he played last night. Coleman is an ascending player. It seems to be calling the 24 draft a bust is very premature.

This morning Sal Cappacio said he thought part of the reason for the poor performance was they were tired having had the joint practice on Friday. Head scratcher. Weren't the Bears there too? -

Let's rally Bills Mafia around this and get on the Bills media to start talking about this or we're going to get punched out week 1. -
Keon and Davis look to be nice additions to the roster we will see if they can ascend beyond role players but I think the early returns on them are thus far positive. Grable and Solomon also have flashed as later round pick depth finds, SVPG was also looking like a nice depth player but injury has derailed his year 2 thus far. The draft class however is hinging on Carter/Bishop the team is going to need one of those players to make an impact on the defense. If Keon is a solid WR2, Davis a nice RB2, Bishop is a starter at safety, and Solomon, SVPG, and Grable are nice depth players the draft class is a solid piece of business.
-
Bishop may be playing out of position at free safety, which exposes his lack of range, coverage skills, and grasp of the defense. He might do better at strong safety where his physicality would be a real asset. Sure does look like a poor draft pick, especially with Cooper DeJean falling out of the first round. Too early to tell about Carter, I'd say, but it doesn't look like he'll be a star, that's for sure. Coleman, Davis, Solomon, and Grable might salvage this class, though.
-
Not beane's best class but interesting this list stopped just before Davis. I also think Grable has come along well and wont be surprised if hes a starter by the end of his rookie contract. SVG could also pan out on the interior and start before the end of his rookie contract, and Solomon has shown flashes both good and bad. Still plenty of time for players (especially the first 3 picks) to figure it out and get many contributors from this class. Like almost everyone i worry the most about carter.

I hope we beat the Ravens week 1. If we do, there's the possibility with our schedule of a 7-0 start going into the Chiefs game. I doubt we start off 7-0 but there is no reason why we shouldn't -

If you are cutting Hamlin, do it now...
Alphadawg7 replied to Ethan in Cleveland's topic in The Stadium Wall
Hamlin is a backup Safety and totally replaceable - no doubt. But his replacement is not on this roster, and if they are, they certainly haven't stepped up to show it yet. Hamlin is going no where this year because Safety is currently our weakest position group and its not close. Rapp and Bishop will start, Hamlin will back up Bishop and the hope is that Bishop takes a step forward this year to be at the very min an improvement on what our Safeties did last year. The only hope in terms of someone replacing Hamlin is Forrest steps up - but I don't think I have heard his name mentioned even once the entire offseason by anyone and he is still at the back of the depth chart. So odds of that happening before the season begins seems pretty unlikely and he is teetering on being a roster bubble guy right now. -

GASabresIUFan replied to Ethan in Cleveland's topic in The Stadium Wall
The Bills have no viable safeties. Rapp is hurt again and remains hurt. Forrest apparently can't beat out a much of injured or bad players. Hamlin is all effort no results. Bishop is raw and injury prone Hancock is a rookie with zero NFL experience. Cam Lewis is a JAG and not even a good one. Does the work dumpster fire mean anything. -

The 2024 class has played a total of 17 regular season games, sorry not going to fully judge them yet. He had a fumble recovery for a TD last night that got called back on a penalty.
