Do The Bills Have A Passing Game Problem?
The Cincinnati Kid replied to BillsFan130's topic in The Stadium Wall
Dude, I promise you the Bills were not trying to push the ball down the field. Josh consistently threw the ball as quickly as he could and consistently took the underneath throws. That is a combination of game plan (the whole plan includes how they wanted to pass protect which was man on man, no slides), personal groupings (lots of big sets) and an understanding of what the Dolphins were doing defensively. The Dolphins knew just as well as the Bills that they’re strength was their pass rush and their weakness were the corners, so they played deep safeties and tried to keep everything in front of them and rally to the football. So, Josh and the Bills took short passes around the LOS and let guys wiggle for gains of 5-10 yards on completions. Which, after a decent run play or two and 1 or 2 of those short passes make a 1st down. When then makes drives, which lead to scores. The hope is, for the defense, that the O will make a mistake and therefore punt. Josh and the O didn’t make many mistakes. They won as a result. -
Bingo. In a nutshell this is IT

That was a championship level play by Bernard

I completely forgot that you can't move before the KR catches it. So my point isn't valid.

100% agree…. On O. D…..a rock hammer worn down worse than Andy Duftesne’s when he popped out the other end of the sweet pipe. Another good thing about this O is the lack of beating Josh has taken , by design and by choice.

The defense is missing a lot of components. Obviously Ed and Milano were the big names but the PED Twins are still suspended and the teams first round pick at corner is on IR. That's 5 potential high end role players or starters that this defense could have in the pipe. I'm not super worried about the defense. They gave up 21 points could have been more could have been less. The Fins offense isn't a bad unit either despite their O-line issues. I also just completely throw out Thursday games. Thursday games esp divisional Thursday games are a bit wonky. I want to see more of this defense in action on Sundays and Mondays before I really make any judgements on it. One bad game in the opener, one good game week two, and one OK game in week 3... -
Kicker decision between Bass /Prater

Indeed ... "He skipped the light fandango Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor Was feeling kinda seasick But the crowd called out for more ..." -
I think there's a happy medium where we can be mindful of turnovers and still let the best QB in the league with likely the strongest arm in NFL history throw the ball further than 10 yards down the field more than once a game.

He can start practicing that Tuesday after the Saints game… when he’s actually elevated to the 53 is anyone’s guess. -
Groot was the second highest ranked player on D last week by PFF am I correct?

Do The Bills Have A Passing Game Problem?

We were one Dolphin dumbass penalty from needing the ball back just to drive the field for a tie against a team that had 66 points hung on them the previous 2 weeks by (checks notes) Daniel Jones and Drake Maye. Perhaps there might be something to this. We make the easy things hard for going on 3 seasons now. If WR wasn't a problem then why did they pickup Cooper last year? They keep shopping in the clearance isle for WR and we get guys that can't do it when we really need them to. -
This is all good for the whole "winning games" thing, but old Josh was much more fun to watch.

Every day we’re getting closer to ‘even if Hairston is bad he’s an upgrade from Tre’ haha. I think I said Hairston is a big injury week 1 and got laughed at by somebody lol I do think tre will be a serviceable wr2 against most teams but the dolphins aren’t that team lol that was the biggest difference between the dolphins and jets games for me…jets have Garrett Wilson as wr1 then a bunch of nobodies so they couldn’t really exploit anything in the passing game

Well, I can't help but thinking we could have taken the kill shot earlier in the game if we opened things up near the back portion of the second half but we stuck to our run game and dink and dunk. We won! But against a sub-par Dolphins secondary I'm not sure that it needed to be that close. Love that we run it and control the ball so well but we can push the pedal to the metal and I think we aught to consider hitting it in high gear a little more often. We should pull away/close games earlier and I think we have opportunities if we adjust our playcalling--just a little bit!

I really appreciate your thoughtful reply. I disagree though that negativity and criticism are more interesting than positivity. Balanced critical conversation is the best but many posters here lack balance. If they were balanced their words would carry more weight because people would see that they have a sound perspective on things and that they're not just always complaining. When I see posters who are continuously negative it's not hard to imagine how they might be in their own lives. I think that a lot of Bills fans live vicariously through the team and use the team as a proxy for their own unhappiness and frustrations. On the other hand are people who somehow have been afforded happiness, but who are still discerning, capable of critical thinking, and have interesting views on things... without the constant need to bring others down... I personally don't find people that smile and laugh a lot to be shallow or boring... does anyone think Josh Allen isn't a complex and fascinating person? So I don't think negativity is more insightful... if anything, the opposite.

Was gonna say same thing. Epenesa has always been too light in the a$$ since his rookie year. Now Rousseau looks the same. Maybe he thinks it will help his pass rush and is trying to justify his new contract, but he’s not that type of player. He doesn’t win with explosion. He wins with his length, strength and ‘slithery-ness’. Looks easier to block this year so far.

In theory, this is true, but teams are reluctant to try this because if a kicker hits it slightly wrong and the ball doesn't make it to the landing zone, the consequences are pretty dire. The league wants returns, and so far, they are getting them.
-
Since the start of last season (including postseason) Josh has thrown 6 INTs in 664 attempts, a rate of 0.9%. Aaron Rodgers, probably the most famous QB for not giving the ball away, has an amazing career rate of 1.4%. Some people come on here decrying our lack of downfield passing without realizing that the Bills’ game plan and Josh’ approach are an evolution from the gunfight mentality that turned many games into chaos battles. Now we win with an exacto knife.

I think Bass is better at the new kickoffs, for that's worth. Prater doesn't get it deep enough in the landing zone.

Do The Bills Have A Passing Game Problem?
Big Turk replied to BillsFan130's topic in The Stadium Wall
I think the question should be do the Fins have a passing game problem after the graphic into the 3rd quarter where the average air yards per completion was -0.5 yards meaning the average pass completed was behind the LOS. Yikes, WTF was that? -
It took a while, but Tua Turnthaballova finally showed up!!

Is Babbich on the hot seat now?
Royale with Cheese replied to Mister Defense's topic in The Stadium Wall
Seems our only big weakness is 3rd down...problem is its really weak. Whites worst play was missing the sack on Tua that lead to the 3rd and 14 conversion. How does Tua get away from you? He runs like an oompa loompa. -
Pretty much perfect schedule scenario. Sanders & Walker getting a ton of reps and showing a high floor. They should only get better. Looking like two hits on the DL for Beane. I think they’ll ride Bosa a little more than they’d like until Hoecht comes back, and then he’ll get ratcheted back a bit when we have a weapon like him to rotate in. Just get Oliver fully healthy. Hes missed, but we can win without him in this stretch. Just wish Hairston was able to get reps in this stretch. Hopefully they can get him on the field Week 5 or 6, Bye week and then a Carolina game before we play the Chiefs. This Defense takes a massive step if he’s an upgrade at CB2. Milano, imo, is a cross your fingers we get him to the playoffs healthy. Would like to rest him for a few weeks and get Dorian Williams & Shaq Thompson more reps … like what I saw from them, but they aren’t the weapon Milano is when healthy.
