Terrible fumble at a terrible time.  Is this all on Mecole or should McD have told him to just fair catch the punt?

I understand he was signed to add a more dynamic presence to the kick return game.  He broke one early and then on kick off they avoided him the rest of the game and got burned by Davis.  I guess my question is should McD have been more conservative with a guy new the organization and has been out of of football for a while, especially on punt returns where the returner is under more immediate pressure than on a kick off.

Given the score and the fact that we'd have had a short field even with a fair catch, I don't think I'd have risked the return in the that situation.

Will the Bills cut Mecole over the mistake?  I understand they announced he left the game with an injury, but I'm a little skeptical.  It feels more like a benching similar to the one Cook received following a bad fumble.

considering the number of mistakes other players have made and still have their jobs, I chalk this up to a “learning experience” and believe we would keep him

The fact that he was signed on Monday and running a go route on Sunday tells me that McD and/or Brady like the speed he brings to the WR room.  I don't think they see him as exclusively a return man.

And maybe the calf injury wasn't the legit reason he was benched, but maybe it was.

I don't expect him to be cut.  But I don't think he'll survive another fumble.

Let's see what his practice participation is this week. I don't expect him active Thursday. He was ruled out fairly quick. I think he survives.

They gave Codrington a LOT of chances before cutting bait. And he offered nothing as a CB. Hardman at least may offer something on offense.

My prediction is he's inactive due to the calf this week, and yes I think it's a legitimate injury, and then he has 10 days to heal up, get more practice time in and be active the following game.

If he has a calf injury I think it would be pretty hard to see him make it back on 4 days rest for Thursday night.

This was the same player that gave the Bills a fighting chance in the divisional round against KC in the playoffs when they had to come to Buffalo by fumbling thru the endzone at the half yard line when a TD would have put the Chiefs up by 2 scores late in the game which led to the drive Allen missed Shakir in the endzone thanks to Dawkins getting shoved into Allen by Jones as he threw and then Bass missing a FG to tie.

Fumbling has definitely been an issue for him throughout his career.

Over his career he has 14 fumbles on 401 career touches, including playoff games. That is a LOT of fumbles for that few touches...it's 1 every 28.6 touches.

It's even worse in the playoffs...regular season it's 10 fumbles on 340 touches (1 every 34 touches). In the playoffs it's 4 fumbles in 61 touches, one every 15.3 touches.

Cut. heck naw.

Dude a scored Huge Touchdown !!

Only lesson there was to calm down down and get down, with two hands on the ball safely secured :)

Tobin or who ever will get him straight

He needs another chance. Put him on the field and let him use speed. Him and Allen may mesh well.

As a side note, what happened to this guy? I thought he was going to beva very good receiver when he was drafted.

Well, I heard he had a calf injury... but assuming that is ok... he is guilty of trying to do to much on that last return... I think he gets a mulligan.. he does it again and I think its curtains...

He better be in the starting lineup next week. One fumble on his first return to action is nothing, especially for an experienced vet. He'll get over it. McD should too.

It likely doesn’t have an immediate impact on his roster status. Gotta remember that they’re watching the totality of his performance where he was also blocking his ass off which resulted in some of Davis’ return success.

A little harsh for one mistake.

If the mods punished everyone here for one bad post it literally could be considered "Two" Bills Drive for the number of posters remaining 😃

I'm gonna guess that was the instruction.  We had base defense on the field, and would have had great field position if he just caught the ball.  It was such a dumb move.  Of his three PRs, he butchered two of them.   Should have FC the first one, too.

What the heck was up with all the awesome returns yesterday?  Felt like we broke off more nice returns yesterday than we have all year, or even all of last year!

Suspicious that TB may have horrendous ST's, but hoping its not a fluke.  Also, would be a great time to get Ray involved in running game.  We need a 2nd guy to be able to put out in the run game (Ty seems more comfortable in pass game).  We cant afford to grind Cook down like we have rest of year.... but we also need a 2nd guy putting out.  Really hope we can build off Ray & Ty having nice days yesterday. (Also loved Hardman's deep shot down the field!).

Worst case, let Hardman return Kickoff's and turn him into a punt catcher.  I read he had 9 punt return fumbles in his career before yesterday!

Based on the body of work of the rest of our WRs, he could’ve fumbled, ran over to the crowd, chugged someone’s beer and officially announced preferring ranch to blue cheese and hed still be safe for next week

Fumbles are unacceptable,  clean out your locker and join our assembled crowd of NFL fumblers from Sunday afternoon.

We are meeting in the main lobby 7pm sharp. Don't be late...bring your gloves.

I've watched that fumble a bunch of times. He doesn't just drop it or let it go through his hands. The gunner tackles him around his arms and pulls his right arm off of the ball. That's in his defense. But what is VERY clear is that he should have called for a fair catch. Two gunners were bearing down on him behind his blockers.
