6 OL package?

What happened to the 6 OL package that the Bills used to such fanfare last year?

Has Alec Andersen been hurt? Has Jackson Hawes surpassed him with the TE pass-catching added advantage? 

I thought that package gave us a tougher attitude. Imposing our will on other teams.  Yet I don't think I've seen it once in recent weeks.
Hawes has been good, but has he been that good to eliminate the package entirely?

It's been more the fact that Hawes is a beast blocker. Yes, he's been good enough to take that spot. 

 

It also gives the Bills some versitality as he can still run a route as a receiver with some credibility where Anderson in let's the defense know it's a much higher percentage that it will be a run play.

As i have been saying we are blessed with 3 very good TEs each with a different skillset. the problem is the Kyle Pitts mistake, as i think of it. Pitts is a good pass catching tight end but teams don't cover him like a TE. they cover him like a slot so he can't be productive. if he had to beat LB's he'd win. it today's NFL good LB's can still cover Kincaid and Pitts, and most safeties, can too without being bodied.

 

so we have a TE who isn't fast enough or good enough hands to be a WR being labeled a TE for that very reason.

 

that's why i like Knox as a TE more. he can block, he can catch as well as the average TE, and he can do the balance of work required. Hawes may have more talent than we realize catching and we have no idea how good his routes are or how good he is at exploiting open zones or finding seams.

something you can get away w for a season before it becomes unsustainable

Yeah, I think Anderson started the season listed as the backup to all three interior line spots.

Atlanta had a mean pass rush, so we should have run it down their throats!

That's a good point and maybe part of why they don't want or risk him as 6th OL. They need him as the main backup.

I was thinking this exact same thing. I know the plan was to replace the extra OL with Hawes. My thought was why not use both. Use 6 linemen AND Hawes and let’s see if we can’t block it up

Jackson Hawes provides more versatility and is an excellent run blocker in his own right.

Hawes is a more traditional heavy package choice, but man, I miss those runs with Alec Anderson clearing out a LB or DB like a snowplow in a Buffalo blizzard.

He didn’t get the ball either play but here’s why they moved away from 6 OL. Hawes doesn’t even have to run an actual route to have a chance at chunk plays on play action. Top of the screen on both plays.

i think we can go super jumbo like baltimore did last year.  just maul teams up front from time to time, and pass out of it to the tight ends or back, or single WR if they coverage brakes down.

 

brady is creative with odd mixes of people and strange playcalls, but he hasn't found a way to show one look and run lots of different things (that work) out of it.

Yeah to date Hawes is our 2nd best draft impact... in fact I really feel like they stumbled on this... like geez we knew he could block but... he has another dimension... I think we see more of him as the year goes on and he becomes more comfortable in the system and of course McD becomes more comfortable with him... but I agree on the 6... I think he isnt gonna block like a Professional OT but the loss of a bit of blocking %age is way more than made up for by the threat of him going into a pattern and catching the ball... defenses will need to respect that...
