(picking up script, clearing throat): "F ESPN!! They have been irrelevant for decades!  Nobody watches or reads them anymore!"

(reads article):  "Of course ESPN is still relevant, as the far and away leader in national sports reporting and broadcasting!  Anyone who says they don't tune in are bad liars!"

Yet he hasn't adapted his defense to not be a weak link on the team which has resulted in why they get bounced in the playoffs

McDermott will not ascend to being anything more than a culture builder that has benefitted from having an all time QB that has masked his inability to field a defense that holds up it's end of the bargain come playoff time and will continue to fail until he admits his defensive scheme isn't good enough and hands the keys over to a legit DC that will run his own scheme without McDermotts influence

When McDermott came to Buffalo, he brought a notebook filled with everything he could put in it about how to be a head coach.  He used that as a manual to guide his actions.  Following that meant that his approach to coaching was a bit mechanical at first.  Having done it for a number of years now, I expect he has chucked the notebook now.  He has established a routine and is now free to experiment a bit and even follow his feelings at times because he has his routine and the trust of his bosses.

I guess the same could be said of Andy Reid if look at his time in Philadelphia.

Nice guy and excellent culture builder. We already knew that. I just don't see how his ability to adapt and loosen up has translated to his defenses being strong, healthy and prepared come playoff time?

His legacy will always center around bringing Josh to this team and ending the drought.  Having a culture & process is important.  And this team reflects that. But there's still something missing. The player personnel decisions by McB have been inconsistent. And there just seems to be a gear that Sean is incapable of shifting to.

So many arguments seem to center around "look how long it took Andy to finally break through".  Now we have a once in a generation qb. There should be no excuses. Sean McDermott is a beloved HC and has earned that support.  So I guess we continue to wait and be optimistic.  Maybe he continues to adapt and is willing to hand "his" defense over to a world class DC?  I just don't know if Babich is that guy.

I do know that Brady and Andy don't win some of those SB's without Belichick and Spagnola.  So in Sean's case you're only as good as the people you surround yourself with.

I think McD has attempted to adapt his philosophy and approach. From 2017-2022 he was very loyal to coordinators. After 2022 he fired Frazier and in mid-2023 he fired Dorsey and moved onto a new ST coach this year. He was very conservative on in game calls like going for it on 4th down. Now he's a top 10 coach in terms of "aggressive" in game decisions and top 5 in some years. McD even has attempted to loosen up his communication and style of coaching after the 6-6 start in 2023 and the article that came out about his coaching.

I am not going to say that he is the right coach to take this team over the top but I do think he's at the very least not trying to do the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Does everyone in WNY hate McDermott as much as people here do? Because if so, I get the impression that he couldn't go to Wegmans for eggs without a bunch of middle-aged men spitting in his face.

1-  how does a coach keep his players healthy come playoff time?

2-  his story is not yet complete.  But I guess you already know that we have 0% chance to win the Super Bowl this season.  His legacy may include being the first coach to lead this team to a Lombardi.

funny how so many people know so much about what the future holds
