Interesting comment from McDermott Sal pointed out about execution of plays called on defense.

How do you know it's so hard?  And how's the complexity here compare to other teams, how do you know that? 

 

There was an article in the paper maybe the Buffalo News where Landon Jackson was quoted as saying something along the lines of one of the other players told him.  You're likely not going to always remember the play or your assignment or even hear the call right, just go with your gut and play fast.  A rookie going with his gut can be a problem.

3. The missed tackles. There was a bunch last night but the Shaq miss on Diggs was a game loser that allowed the Pats a first down. I'm not sure how pro players cant tackle. I have no idea how they fix that? fundamentals somehow missing.

 

It seemed like a couple of positives for the Bills last night then a lot of regression

 

 

The Pats were 3/9 in converting 3rd downs.

 

We looked bad against the pass this weekend. But for most of the season we've been very good, actually. We were #1 in the league against the pass after week four. That's a bit deceptive, but it does make the point. But yeah, Poyer and Hyde were even more valuable than they seemed at the time. We're trying to switch from mostly zone to being able to do both this year. It was always likely to have hiccups.

 

Couldn't agree more about hemming in Maye. The Bills are usually really good at this. They were awful yesterday.

 

The defense allowed 23 points. In a game where the Pats started one drive at the Buffalo 11 yard line. More, the first half defense was really good. But they were bad in the 2nd. But the defense was certainly not the main problem.

Might feel that way, but it's not true. They were great (though not against the Chiefs) all the way up to probably 2023. Poyer and Hyde aging out hurt desperately.

 

#1 defense in 2021

#2 defense in 2022

#4 defense in 2023.

#11 last year, a major dropoff

And some point McDermott has to look in the mirror regarding this D and his overall philosophy. Defensively, with the exception of Bosa, Thompson and the two rookie DL, everyone has experience playing in his system. The constant excuses about guys not understanding the system is worn out. 

 

It stills burns me that the Bills let Houston covert a 4th and long by playing so soft in coverage and I don’t need to stay anything about his defensive scheme with 13 seconds. Point being these same themes continue today and all to often McDermott can’t make the necessary adjustments.
 

It’s beyond maddening how bad our pass rush is no matter who is on the DL! Year after year, we constantly hear about players playing out of position as we get exploited in the running game. Or even better, our DL continues to get stonewalled by teams with 3 or 4 starters out. For all the insane amount of resources spent on the DL, they continue to underperform. Beane and his scouts should be held accountable as well. The money we haves tied up in Jones, AJE, Groot, Ed, Bosa, Hoecht and Ogu for these results are unacceptable. Do we really believe Hoecht or Ogu are going to dramatically change our DL?
 

We draft small LB’s who can’t hold up to the physicality of the position but yet continue to ignore drafting quality backups. And Joe A or Cairlo aren’t quality backups.

 

In the secondary, when’s the last time a DB or Safety were in position to break on the ball for an INT. Typically, our INT’s are overthrows by the QB. As I mentioned in another post, our entire secondary played horrible last night. Do we really believe a rookie who’s had a significant knee injury is somehow going to change our secondary when he’s had zero NFL experience thus far and had tackling issues in college?

All said we have significant issues on D and  the Bills haven’t played well in the last three games against MIA, Saints and NE!

 

Next up ATL on the road who have multiple offensive weapons!
